EW Swiers & R Grainger See Demand Increase

Tyre recycling’s growth is illustrated by the story of a relatively new company’s plans to expand its operation with a new pre-shredder. The father-daughter partnership of EW Swiers & R Grainger Tyre Disposal and Rubber Chip, started early last year when they set up a tyre shredding facility at Ruffort, on the outskirts of York, North Yorkshire. A year ago, the company took delivery of a shredder to produce 20mm chips, stripping out the wire, for the Equine Market. Within the year the company has met 80 per cent of its targets.

Swiers comments “We feel we were getting positive signals of increased demand about 12–14 weeks ago, so we ordered an additional pre-shredder from New Zealand that will increase our throughput three fold, thus meeting our current demand for the Equine Market.”

Preview: Tyrexpo Asia 2009

It’s not just an excuse for a spot of sightseeing and the opportunity for some authentic and delicious Asian food…with the Asian tyre industry and market developing at an astonishing rate, those wishing to participate in this region in a serious way really do need to be where the action is. In late March the Tyrexpo Asia exhibition returns to Singapore, this time round joined by the IRSG’s World Rubber Summit. And with the exhibitor list for the 7th Singapore show already topping 120 as of last December, Tyrexpo Asia is, as Paul Farrant, from exhibition organiser ECI, an opportunity to “deliver much-needed vitality and innovation into the global market”. Old Tyres Never Die…

TyreGenics Enters Administration

Some 18 months after opening, the TyreGenics recycling joint venture in Baglan, South Wales, has been placed into administration. The £4 million, 80 tonne per day capacity facility was developed by major shareholder Credential Environmental along with BOC, FieldTurf Tarkett and RTI Cryogenics, and began operation in July 2007. From the outset it was announced that FieldTurf had committed to purchasing 70 per cent of output for the first three years, yet in spite of this assured market the facility has been affected by dwindling demand.

China Sunsine Supplying Global Tyre Majors

China Sunsine Chemical Holdings is one of China’s largest rubber accelerator producers. At present the company possesses a total annual production capacity of 50,000 tons of rubber accelerators per annum, plus a further 10,000 tons of insoluble sulphur and 10,000 tons of anti-oxidant. These chemicals are sold to the leading global tyre manufacturers, including Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear, Continental, Pirelli, Sumitomo Rubber, Yokohama, Hankook, Cooper and Kumho. In China, the company supplies – amongst others – Giti Tire, Aeolus Tyre, Shanghai Tyre, Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber and Chengshan Corporation. Worldwide, China Sunsine boasts more than 400 customers in over 30 countries.

PYReco to Build Heat Degradation Tyre Recycler

Tyre recycling firm PYReco plans to build a pioneering £80 million tyre recycling plant in North East England, the first of its kind in Europe. The scheme is underway thanks, in part, to the support of Renew, an organisation tasked with driving a low carbon and sustainability agenda with industry in the region.

The plant will be built at the South Tees Eco Park (STEP) in Tees Valley by 2010. It will use the relatively novel process of pyrolysis, a method of degrading material through heat, to recycle 60,000 tonnes of used tyres a year, the equivalent of 7.5 million tyres, without waste or harmful emissions. It is estimated that plant will create 90 jobs for the region.

Traditionally the uncompromising properties of the material have meant that tyres have been difficult to re-cycle, most often burnt in cement kilns. PYReco’s plant will provide a closed loop recycling route, breaking down used tyres into their component parts capable of being used in the production of brand new units.

Michelin Sells Share in Sapphire Energy Recovery

Michelin Tyre plc has announced the sale of its share in the Sapphire Energy Recover joint venture. The company, established in 2001 by Michelin together with cement and aggregate producer Lafarge, is now solely owned by Lafarge.

The decision to move Sapphire to sole ownership was made, says Michelin, once the business had successfully achieved its objective of developing a healthy and viable end-of-life process for used tyres. Sapphire provides the items to the cement industry as a waste-derived fuel, and the tyre maker adds that a sustainable market that benefits both tyre manufacturers and cement producers has now been created.

SEMA Show 2008 – Exemplifying Inspiration and Optimism

As the world reels from the effects of the global economic slowdown, many may have wondered if this would have had a negative effect on SEMA 2008’s tyres, wheels and equipment section supported by the Tire Industry Association (TIA). As it turned out, while attendance was definitely down, the quality and buying power of attendees was in line with recent shows.

“What we found is that where a buyer might have sent six or seven people in years past – many of whom were not in key decision making positions – this year, they might have only sent two or three people; but they had the authority to make those purchasing decisions,” said TIA executive vice president Roy Littlefield. While Bridgestone has not exhibited at SEMA for a number of years, with the current fiscal conditions being what they are, it was likely that this was a major factor in the decisions of a number of other key players who did not exhibit at this year’s show. While manufacturers such as Michelin and Goodyear had very little, or no, presence at all, there were plenty of other manufacturers who came out in full force, such as Pirelli, Toyo, Yokohama, Cooper, Dunlop, Sumitomo, Hankook and Falken.

Top Gear Car Of The Year 2008

Westfield Sportscars Ltd has welcomed the selection of the Caterham Superlight R500 as Top Gear’s Car of the Year 2008. Commenting on the announcement, Julian Turner, Westfield’s managing director said: “As a company already working intensively on the development of a lightweight electric race car, we welcome the recognition by the knowledgeable Top Gear Team of the significant potential performance of a lightweight vehicle powered by a smaller engine. Tyre Shredder Goes in Administration

Dunkeswell-based Tom Dunn Limited and its associated companies have reportedly gone into administration. According to the Midweek Herald, the firm, which shredded and baled used tyres for recycling has gone under at the cost of around 30 jobs. The newspaper says Tim Ball and Rod Weston, of international accountants Mazars, have been appointed joint administrators and say they are actively seeking a buyer for the business.

Strong Retreading Potential in Chinese Tyre Market

Enormous domestic tyre production capacity, a scarcity of domestic rubber supply and increased output prices could be pointing to strong opportunities in China’s tyre retreading business. Zhou Linyan, president of China Tyre Retreading, Repairing and Recycling Association (CTRA), recently told reporters that China produced 556 million tyres in 2007. And while many of these are destined for export markets, Chinese motorists are expected to discard 200 million end-of-life tyres in 2010.

Other CTRA statistics show that the number of end-of-life (ELT) tyres generated by the People’s Republic have sky-rocketed in recent years – from 32 million in 2000 to 150 million in 2007. Meanwhile, the raw weight of ELTs increased from 12 thousand tons to 3.1 million tons in the same period. While the association predicts China will generate 200 million waste tyres by 2010, the amount of retreading taking place has not yet caught up with the growth in new tyre production and the new tyre to retread rate lies somewhere between 4 and 7 per cent of recovered tyres.

Toyo Proxes to Use Recycled Polyester Tyre Cord Technology

A new tyre launched onto the Japanese market on December 11 utilises the world’s first recycled polyester tyre cord product. The Toyo Proxes Ne features tyre cord manufactured using a substance produced by Teijin Fibers Limited, part of Japan’s Teijin Group. The chemically recycled Ecopet Plus polyester fibres are manufactured through a Teijin developed closed-loop recycling system known as ‘Eco Circle’, and are used in carcass of the environmentally oriented tyre. This is, comments Teijin Fibers, the first time a recycled material has been able to meet the strict requirements necessary for tyre carcass fabric.

China Tyre Retreading, Repairing and Recycling Association statistics show that the number of end-of-life (ELT) tyres discarded in the People’s Republic grew from 32 million in 2000 to 150 million in 2007, while the raw weight of ELTs increased from 12 thousand tons to 3.1 million tons. The association predicts China will generate 200 million waste tyres by 2010, however with the new tyre to retread rate in recent years staying between 4 and 7 per cent it is difficult to say how many of these will be retreaded.
