In the past T&A has reported on a cheetah snacking on tyres in a Cambridgeshire backyard – see our November 2008 story for details of this surreal occurrence – and now we’ve caught wind of a panther heading in our direction. This particular creature also chomps readily upon the black rubber objects, yet there is no cause for concern….rather than being a zoo escapee, the panther in question is a boon for the tyre recycling industry.

In the eight decades that followed the company’s first presence there in 1929, Pirelli has established five factories and a research centre in the South American nation and manufactures 90 per cent of its South American production there. This strong presence reflects Brazil’s growing importance as a strategic centre for vehicle production, and Pirelli’s interest in the region remains strong. At a July press conference, held at the company’s Santo André manufacturing site in Sao Paulo, Pirelli outlined plans to invest a further US$200 million in Brazil over the next three years.
In other Vintage Tyre Supplies news, the Beaulieu based specialist comments that, in the current climate of “recycle and reuse”, the company is well aware of the need to dispose of worn out classic tyres in a responsible way. VTS reports that its tyres are always collected and processed by an ethical tyre processing company; many tyres reappear as children’s playgrounds, conveyer belts and even new car tyres.
Recently however, VTS has been able to use its old worn tyres in a different way, as part of the new “World of Top Gear” at the National Motor Museum, located just a hop, skip and a jump from Vintage Tyres’ headquarters.

“I am absolutely delighted to receive this important honour,” said Peter Taylor: “However without the help and support of other members of the tyre industry and its various trade associations we would not have been able to establish the Responsible Recycler Scheme and make it work as effectively as it does. Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) has named Kwik-Fit as the winner of the 2009 Responsible Recycler Award. The award is presented each year to a tyre retailer who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to innovation and best practice in the field of tyre recycling. In choosing Kwik-Fit for this year’s accolade the association wished to acknowledge the company’s ground-breaking reverse logistics programme whereby the delivery of new tyres to Kwik-Fit centres and the recovery of waste casings are integrated into a simple activity. This combined delivery and collection function saves on delivery and transport costs with the added security of caged delivery.
The award was presented by newly-elected TRA president, Barry Stocker. Speaking after the presentation of the award David White, Kwik-Fit’s customer services director expressed his delight at being this year’s recipient. He said: “This was truly a ‘first’ in the industry and whilst I was delighted to collect the award on Kwik-Fit’s behalf the accolade should really go to Ann Macreadie and Neil Arnott, the people at Kwik-Fit who despite many challenges stuck diligently to the plan and of course I must mention Ceva logistics and Murfitts, for without their tireless efforts it would never have been possible.”
Taking place on Friday 15 May in the conference rooms of the Chesford Grange Hotel in Kenilworth, the Tyre Recovery Association’s annual Forum Day was labelled a “success”, having attracted a populous audience of recycling professionals, which remained in place throughout all of the afternoon’s speakers. For his part, Brickhill was keen to stress the quality of recycling in the tyre industry within his keynote introduction, stating that it is currently “top class”. He also referenced the continuing themes of increased regulation, the environmental theme that is very much entrenched within the industry in the widest sense – particularly when one considers the omnipresence of rolling resistance – and the continued emphasis on safety.
