Kwik-Fit Fleet Awarded for Focus on Vehicle Mileage Reduction

Kwik-Fit Fleet has provided a wide range of fast-fit services to the Legal & General company car fleet for more than a decade, and recently the fast-fitter was selected from a number of competing Legal & General suppliers to win the company’s 2009 Supply Chain ‘Make a Difference’ (MAD) Awards. Legal & General also donated £1,000 to Kwik-Fit Fleet’s nominated charity, Rays of Sunshine, which grants wishes to children in the UK between the ages of three and 18 who are living with serious or life-threatening illnesses.

EPA Study Shows No Harm from Crumb Rubber in Fields

A limited field study by the US Environmental Protection Agency found no cause for human health or environmental concerns with the use of tyre rubber in athletic fields and playgrounds, reports Tire Review. The EPA said it will use the information to determine possible next steps to address questions regarding the safety of tyre crumb fill in the fields. The limited field study was conducted between August and October 2008.

RockTron to Update on Breakthrough at Tire Technology Expo

Eco-mineral recycling technology specialist RockTron says that, along with presenting details of its technological breakthrough at the Tire Technology Expo in Cologne, Germany on Tuesday 9th February 2010, company advanced products director Godfrey Short will announce “impressive results” from results of new research carried out for RockTron.

US Study of Tyre Crumb Rubber Finds 'Low Level of Concern'

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on December 10 the results of a study of the health risks from inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact with synthetic turf and crumb rubber from playing field and playground surfaces constructed with recycled tyre material or tyre crumb. It concluded that "concentrations of components monitored in this study were below levels of concern."

Dunlop Introducing Faster, 'Greener' BTCC Tyre

Following a year and a half of design and materials and construction development at Fort Dunlop in Birmingham, home to the company’s European Motorsport Operations, Dunlop is ready to debut a new tyre in next year’s British Touring Car Championship – a tyre said to provide greater performance while complying with latest European environmental regulations. The Sport Maxx BTCC will first be used in round two of the 2010 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Rockingham, Northamptonshire on April 25 and 25. Meanwhile, recent tests of the new tyre at Snetterton in Norfolk showed it to be faster over a full race distance and also more durable than its predecessor.

State Funds to Aid in Testing of Canadian Scrap Tyre Technology

Canadian firm Ellsin Environmental Ltd is receiving government support in its implementation of technology that will enable scrap tyres to be converted into usable by-products by means of a microwave process. The patented reverse polymerisation technology was developed over a period of more than 15 years by another Canadian company, Environmental Waste International (EWI), and Ellsin has contracted EWI to build a demonstration system based on the EWI process. To assist, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is investing CA$2 million assist in the construction of a test plant.

CBp Carbon Pyrolysis Rights Redistributed in Share Transfer

Following the closure of a share swap agreement between Slovak Republic based CBp Carbon Industries, Inc and US company Carbon Green Inc. (formerly known as Neema Inc.), both companies will effectively hold an ownership stake in CBp Carbon subsidiary Greenwood Commerce Ltd, who now holds the worldwide exclusive ownership rights to a proprietary technology that allegedly enables the by-products of tyre pyrolysis to be converted into recovered steel, a diesel equivalent oil that can be employed to generate green electricity in many countries, a nano-particle compound said to be a tyre industry-tested and accepted competitive substitute for commercial carbon black, and a clean-burning gas Greenwood will use to power its processing plants.

Yokohama Goes Zero Emissions in Thailand

According to Yokohama Rubber, its Yokohama Tire Manufacturing (Thailand) passenger car and truck and bus tyre facility has achieved “zero emissions”; in other words, less than one per cent of its total waste volume is now subject to direct landfill disposal. In order to confirm this result the Japanese company conducted on-site investigations of all contractors commissioned to dispose of waste from the plant.

Ukrainian Tyre Recycler Coral Group Joins TRIB

Coral Group Ecological Technologies (Ukraine) has become the latest company to join the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB). Formed just over five years ago, Coral Group has developed what TRIB describes as “a very important method for recycling waste tyres and has a pilot plant in operation in the Ukraine to prove the economic and environmental benefits of their method.” Coral Group’s method is a pyrolisis-based technique that the company says results in an “ecologically clean and financially beneficial method of recycling the worn out automobile tyres.”

Magnum Commences Tyre Recycling Operations at its Hudson Site

Magnum D’Or Resources reports that recycling operations at its Hudson tyre landfill site in the US state of Colorado officially began on November 12. Activities at the site include the sorting, preparation, and shredding of tyres into small pieces that will be accumulated as input into the company’s powder equipment, currently under contract to be built and installed through Magnum Engineering International (MEI) and its affiliates. In order to create a stream of revenue while awaiting delivery and installation of this machinery, the company has also recently began accepting a wide variety of scrap tyres.

European Recycling, Recovery Rates Still Growing, Claims ETRMA

Figures released by the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers’ Association show end of life tyre recycling and recovery rates last year to have exceeded 95 per cent. The 2008 statistics released by the ETRMA show a continuation in the pattern seen over the last 15 years or so, a period during which the disposal of end of life tyres in landfill has decreased from more than 60 per cent in 1994 to around five per cent today. The number of old tyres receiving ecological treatment, the ETRMA notes, has increased by an average of four per cent yearly.

Magnum Gains Permits for Tyre Landfill Site

The approval of operational permits and licensing means that Magnum D'Or Resources subsidiary Magnum Recycling USA is now able to supply waste tyres from its 120+ acre Hudson, Colorado landfill facility to Magnum’s planned recycling facility, where rubber powders and compounds such as those the company recently tested in light truck tyres will be manufactured.

Australia Sets Out National Tyre Recycling Framework

During a meeting of Australia’s Environment Protection and Heritage Council (EPHC) on November 5, Australia’s state environment ministers agreed upon a new national policy on waste and resource management. This National Waste Policy sets the agenda for waste and resource recovery in Australia over the next decade, and as part of it the tyre industry will develop a scheme to increase waste tyre recycling in Australia.

UK Tyre Derived Rubber Materials Protocol Released

The final version of the Environmental Agency and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) quality protocol has been released after approval by the European Commission. The 'Quality Protocol for Tyre-derived Rubber Materials', made public on November 3, finally provides a separate classification for rubber materials manufactured from waste tyres; classification as a product as opposed to a waste, as was previously the case, removes such items from waste regulation.

Successful Debut For TIF Question Time

An innovation on the day of the NTDA's recent Annual Dinner was a "Question Time"-style seminar, in which a panel drawn from all sectors of the tyre industry answered questions from the floor. Here’s our synopsis of questions, answers and comments from the delegates. The event was sponsored by the Tyre Industry Federation and it attracted an audience of more than 30. TIF chairman Peter Gaster chaired the panel and the other members were: Alan Baldwin, Micheldever Tyre Services; Mark Brickhill, Goodyear Dunlop Tyres; Derek McMartin, Maxxis UK; Patrick O'Connell, Bandvulc Group; Noel Pope, Merityre Specialists and Tim Stott, Sapphire Energy Recovery. Thus, between them, the panel covered all segments of the tyre business, from manufacturing and importing tyres, to wholesaling, retailing, retreading and scrap tyre disposal.
