Bridgestone Australia states it has relinquished its Australian Tyre Industry Council (ATIC) membership for “a variety of business reasons pertaining to the operation of the Council.” No further details explaining the tyre firm’s differences with the ATIC have been given.
Eldan Recycling A/S has supplied its Steel Cleaning System to French company RBSI. RBSI has been using the system to clean steel from its existing tyre granulation line since January. According to the company, the Eldan Steel Cleaning System is designed to process up to 2.4 tonnes steel wire per hour with a minimum required purity of 96 per cent (free of rubber and textile).
When Maine Industrial Tire was integrated into Trelleborg Wheel Systems following its acquisition late last year, its Brawler brand was taken on by the Swedish manufacturer. It has now announced the addition and planned global roll out of a range of Brawler brand large OTR solid tyres.
The commercial availability of Sumitomo’s Enasave 97, albeit in small volumes, has demonstrated the feasibility of producing tyres containing very little in the way of fossil fuels. Introducing completely or nearly fossil fuel-free products in greater quantities is a goal held by all tyre majors, and Continental’s head of material and process engineering has shared some details about the German tyre maker’s progress in this direction.
A number of tyre manufacturers have launched new products at Tyrexpo India 2013 in Chennai this week. Aeolus, BKT, Emrald and TVS Tyres have all introduced commercial tyres for applications from truck to OTR. Amongst these, Aeolus is notable for being one of a number of Chinese manufacturers making their debut in India. It is joined by its compatriots Hangzhou Zhonce, Linglong and Wanda Boto.
With a full range of tyres designed for each part of the waste/recycling market Kal Tire hopes to communicate how it has become the UK’s number one at this year’s RWM show.
In addition to an available supply of new tyres in a comprehensive range of sizes and tread patterns, the company offers Kal ‘Fil’ tyres as a cost effective long-term solution to tyre related machine downtime in hazardous environments. According to the company, Fil tyres are guaranteed 100 per cent and can be retreaded up to three times; (depending on casing quality) giving further cost savings and environmental benefits on replacement tyres. Trelleborg Blue Dimension concept is being taken to another level as the company announced its plans to print all promotional materials on only recycled paper certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), an international certification program that promotes environmentally appropriate forest management. The company’s new approach to brochures, leaflets and technical catalogues will start in July, with the new marketing materials shown for the first time at the leading agricultural exhibition Agritechnica 2013 in Hannover, Germany, on 10-16 November.
Danish recycling equipment manufacturer Eldan Recycling A/S has recently delivered a tyre shredding machine to the biggest retread manufacturer in Venezuela. The order is said to mark the first time Elda has delivered a product to a business in Venezuela.
The company, which has hundreds of employees, receives used tyres every day – mostly truck tyres and other large tyres that are retreaded to prolong the lifespan of the tyres. A part of the tyres is unfit for use and the retread manufacturer wishes to process these tyres in the Eldan Super Chopper as first step to recover the rubber, steel and textile, making it an environmental and profitable alternative to landfill.

A landfill site in Kuwait is the resting place of 7 million used tyres, making it the largest of its kind in the world, according to the Daily Mail. While the Mail points out that such a site couldn’t exist in the UK owing to landfill directive, the newspaper does point out the Kuwaiti site is now actually visible from space.
Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire-based transport operator Charles Brown & Son Haulage Limited has become the first UK operator to fit Westlake tyres to its fleet since Vacu-Lug was appointed sole UK distributorship for the brand, which is produced by China’s largest domestic tyre manufacturer.
As well as a number of other aftermarket-orientated seminars Tyres & Accessories has already reported on, Autopromotec’s AutopromotecEDU plenary track also featured what was purportedly Italy’s first conference on remanufacturing. Entitled, “Excellence in material recycling and the industrial remanufacturing cycle”, the conference was introduced and moderated by Il Sole 24 Ore’s journalist Maurizio Caprino. He provided an overview on the current state and future perspectives of the remanufacturing industry, with several interesting presentations.

The Health and Safety Executive has prosecuted and fined tyre collection and recycling company Saltire Recovery Ltd following an incident at the company’s Burton-on-Trent facility last July. Saltire Recovery pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 by failing to protect its employees, and was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay costs of £4,722.
Continental’s increased specialisation in the commercial tyre segment was discussed at the launch of its latest “third generation” coach and bus tyres, but this reorganisation, begun from 1 January, has wider implications for applications beyond TBR products. The managing director of Continental Commercial Specialty Tires (CST), Dr Michael Maertens explained that the manufacturer’s new business strategy, indicated by the restructuring of this business unit, contains initiatives for future growth with particular focus on industrial and off the road material handling, underground mining and tyres for a specialised application you may not have expected to have swift growth potential.
Following Kumho Tire USA’s second recall of thousands of tyres in the US, Liberty Tire Recycling released a statement claiming it was unaware the tyres it received from Kumho had previously been recalled in August 2012 and were slated for destruction. “We were not made aware of any NHTSA safety recall that applied to these tyres when we received them last summer,” the company said, adding that the tyres were “not properly incapacitated by Kumho and were not under a 'destroy-only' contractual agreement.”
