The Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) is urging the Environment Agency (EA) to listen to the recycling industry to avoid the inadvertent promotion of unregulated businesses. While the TRA and other waste streams have repeatedly been calling for amendments to the EA’s proposed new Fire Prevention Plan over the past four years, especially to proposed stack heights and the fire breaks between them, the recommendations have, as yet, gone unheeded. The TRA believes that if due action is not taken, unregulated businesses will profit while those with a proven, professional and regulated background will rapidly be forced out of the industry.
In the absence of legislation regarding the disposal of end of life tyres, New Zealand’s tyre importers, wholesalers and retailers are free to deal – or not deal – as they please with the more than 5 million tyres demounted from vehicles every year. According to estimates published by the Tyrewise project, some 70 per cent of these tyres end up in landfill. This is why Bridgestone considers the agreement it has signed to collect and recycle waste tyres from its stores throughout the country’s North Island “breakthrough”.

Tamworth-based Polymer Recyclers Ltd (PRL) is putting together a case for a retread compound with recycled tyre crumb as a major ingredient. The company says it is currently retreading and trialling retread compound containing 35 per cent rubber crumb. It calculates that this method could yield a material saving of 25 per cent.
Among the TRA’s key achievements in the past ten years, the organisation has helped to develop a standard for tyre-derived materials (PAS 107), in conjunction with the Environment Agency, BSI and WRAP. It has since added a new Quality Protocol (QP) option to PAS 107, designed to promote sustainable, cost-effective tyre recycling and stimulate further demand for tyre-derived materials.
The Tyre Recovery Association’s (TRA) Recycling Day, a one-day conference and dinner organised in partnership with the Retread Manufacturers Association, was held at the Ardencote Manor, Warwickshire on Friday, 19 June. Attended by representatives of the tyre and waste recycling industries, the conference included presentations covering the key themes of regulations and enforcement, best practise and innovation, and common causes and issues facing the industry. The unity of the various trade bodies struck a particularly strong note throughout the day, not just through the joint organisation of the event between the Retread Manufacturers Association (RMA) and the TRA, but with strong backing given to the event by association directors representing the whole of the UK tyre industry. The Recycling Day also marked an occasion for celebration, as the TRA celebrated its tenth anniversary.

York-based supplier of recycling equipment and solutions, Easi Recycling has added a new, high capacity product to its portfolio of balers and compactors. While the company’s range has always included tyre balers, the newly upgraded line now includes the higher output W8500H baler. Processing between 400 and 500 tyres per hour, with an 85 ton pressing force and increased support pressing plate, the W8500H has been designed and manufactured purposefully for the tough material waste management of vehicle tyres, Easi states.
In the eight years since US-based green materials manufacturer Lehigh Technologies first brought its micronised rubber powder (MRP) to market, the substance has been used in the production of at least 300 million new tyres around the world. Today Lehigh sells its MRP in numerous markets, including several in Europe, and in order to better serve its customers in our region (as well as those in the Middle East and Africa) the company has now opened a wholly-owned subsidiary in Spain.

On 13 April Lehigh Technologies, a materials company producing micronized rubber powders (MRP), announced it won the 2015 Bloomberg New Energy Pioneer award. Lehigh Technologies was recognized for its innovation in commercializing a range of Micronized Rubber Powders (MRP) from end-of life tyres that are used as raw materials in a wide range of industrial markets, ranging from rubber to asphalt. MRP can reduce feedstock costs by 30 per cent or more, while delivering equivalent or improved performance and an improved sustainability profile compared to oil-based chemical inputs.
The owner of a tyre waste business has been given a 15-month custodial sentence, suspended for 2 years, and a 2 year supervision order after illegally storing almost 84,659 waste tyres at several sites in Devon. The case was brought by the Environment Agency and the sentence was handed down on 25 March.

Danish pension fund PKA, accountancy firm Deloitte and a group of four bank lenders have signed an agreement to secure the future of tyre recycling company Genan. This agreement aims to safeguard jobs and ensure Genan’s continued existence. At the same time, a new chairman of the Genan Board of Directors has been instated.
