A new strategic partnership to tackle waste tyres was announced earlier in August by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and business group Entrepreneurial Scotland.
Through the partnership entrepreneurs are being challenged to find sustainable business opportunities for used tyres over the next five years. At the same time, the SEPA has committed to developing a dedicated sector plan that will set actions and targets for tackling used tyre issues, including illegal dumping.
The Irish Road Hauliers Association (IRHA) and Midland Tyres Services Ltd (MTS) have jointly announced their opposition to the proposed inclusion of truck tyres into the pending Environmental Disposal Levy (EDL) scheme. IRHA and MTS said their opposition has the “strong and universal support” of their members and customers.
Recycling equipment firm Eldan has opted to view Brexit as an opportunity in the midst of uncertainty, commenting on the subject for the first time on 17 August. According to the company, the uncertainty of the UK economy after Brexit and lack of a stable government has not affected the opportunities for Eldan Recycling in this key market. Enquiries show that there is still demand from customers who want to enter the recycling industry, the firm reports.
The Tyre Recovery Association has been accepted into membership of the Parliamentary All-Party Sustainable Resource Group (ASPRG), a cross-party group whose main purpose is to help parliamentarians fully engage with waste and sustainable resource policy issues.
According to the Tyre Recovery Association (TRA), the Republic of Ireland’s proposed tyre compliance scheme, which is due to come into effect on 1 October, will “seriously distort end of life tyre recovery and recycling efforts on the island of Ireland with knock-on-effects in the UK as a whole”.
Black Bear’s carbon black has received an official Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze Certificate, assessed by the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA). This is the first time that a carbon black has received this certification.
“This certification is a clear demonstration of our commitment to accelerating the transition towards a circular economy. We are pleased that we can now offer carbon black users a real and officially certified choice for selecting clean and green materials” said Martijn Lopes Cardozo, CEO Black Bear.

The New Zealand government intends to get serious about waste tyres and has released a consultation document outlining a proposed National Environmental Standard.
Green Distillation Technologies is set to build a large off-the-road (OTR) tyre recycling plant in Western Australia in early 2018. The company and Tytec Recycling are collaborating on the processing plant in Perth, which will reclaim raw materials from tyres that are 25 to 63 inches in diameter.
Munich-based recovered carbon black (rCB) manufacturer Pyrolyx has signed two agreements that will advance plans to construct a rCB plant in Terre Haute, Indiana, USA.
The company has signed a multi-year supply agreement in the US with an unnamed masterbatch manufacturer that calls for Pyrolyx to supply rCB sourced from end-of-life tyres for use in colourants, special effects and additives that go into masterbatch. The deal involves securing long-term supply with a price advantage, Pyrolyx said.
Canada-based gasification and pyrolysis waste conversion technologies provider Klean Industries Inc. shares that one of its facilities has become the world’s first tyre pyrolysis plant to receive Cradle to Cradle (C2C) certification. This C2C certification by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry LLC follows a 12-month study of the Klean Industries production process and the end uses of the recycled carbon and oil products that derive from it.
State-owned Chinese firm Guangzhou Vanlead Group, parent company of Wanli tyre brand manufacturer South China Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd, has signed two memorandums of understanding with Swedish firm Scandinavian Enviro Systems. The first of these covers the establishment of a turnkey recycling plant in Guangdong province, and the second the setting up of a joint venture to market Enviro’s patented technology across China.

A new report prepared for Australian Tyre Recyclers Association (ATRA), “Carbon Value Proposition, Resource Recovery using Tyre Derived Fuels”, states that replacing one tonne of black coal with one tonne of TDF can save emissions of up to 1.05 tonnes of CO2-e into the atmosphere.
Swedish based recycling machinery maker, Eldan, has announced that it is supplying Qatar’s Modern Recycling Factory (MRF). MRF is based in Mesaieed Industrial City and is already now operational. The US$41.3 million facility was financed and endorsed more than two years ago by Al Khalij Commercial Bank in support of Qatar’s green-technology business sector.
