From Dakar to Loton Park on Cooper Avon tyres

2012 saw champions crowned on Cooper Tires and Avon Tyres racing products in over 250 motor racing championships around the globe. In addition to the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 Series and the Avon Tyres British GT Championship (see Tyres & Accessories’ October issue for details), Cooper Avon added the Avon Tyres MSA British Hillclimb Championship to its roster of major motorsport activations. General Motorsport manager at Cooper Tire Europe, Paul Coates, reflected: “It’s been another phenomenal year for Cooper and Avon’s involvement in motorsport. Supplying tyres to an array of vehicles across the world, we’ve witnessed great racing and some extremely close-fought championship battles in 2012 and we’re already looking forward to another fruitful year in 2013.”

Stapleton’s adds labelling functionality to ProfitLink

Stapleton’s became the tyre distribution industry’s first to launch an online ordering system more than a decade ago. More recently the company upgraded this and now the recently revamped ProfitLink2 reportedly remains a leader in the field, putting the leading distributor’s nationwide 1,200,000 units of tyre stocks at its retail customers’ fingertips. The latest development relates to the tyre labelling legislation that will take effect shortly after this article is published in print at the back end of October.

Guinness time for Yokohama following cowboy hat promotion

Yokohama Tire has taken part in a uniquely American promotion that ended up in the Guinness Book of World Records. The tyre maker sponsors the Los Angeles Angels baseball team, and at a game against a team from Texas in early June the team handed out Yokohama-branded cowboy hats to fans. During the fifth inning, the 39,013 fans in attendance were certified as the “largest gathering of people wearing cowboy hats,” topping the old Guinness record of 500.

Jail cheating drivers, says RHA

The Road Haulage Association has called for tougher action to be taken against truck drivers who falsify their driving records. Mandatory jail sentences are needed to deter those who are tempted to cheat – backed by a new determination to detect and prosecute them through the courts, the RHA says.

Change to new size equals 25% better mileage for Prestons

Size does matter, and this is precisely the reason why Prestons of Potto doesn’t regret a switch from 295/80 R 22.5 drive axle tyres to 315/80 R 22.5 fitments on its new tractor units. The different size tyres – all Michelin XDN2 Grip – were specified on 20 new Scania R480 6×2 tractor units that entered service with the Northallerton-based company in February and March 2010. After more than two years on the road, Prestons reported that the highest-mileage tractor unit had clocked up 325,683 miles (524,137 kilometres) before its tyres needed replacing.

10 million cars could have a murky past

HPI, the vehicle information expert, warns that there could be up to 10.4 million cars with a hidden history on the UK's roads. This follows news from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) that there has been a 9 per cent increase in cars in the UK to 31,362,716. With 1 in 3 cars hitting HPI's 'at risk' registers the SMMT figures suggest that the nearly new and second hand car market is a minefield for buyers.

TyreSafe emphasises need for adequate tread depth in wet

The UK is wet and it doesn’t look like drying any time soon; the country is suffering its wettest second quarter since records began in 1910. TyreSafe has reacted to the weather by publicising the necessity of adequate tyre tread to stay safe on wet roads. “Spring felt more like autumn this year with its unusually high rainfall, yet what it does show is that tyre tread depth should be checked regularly, whatever time of year, to make sure they can cope properly with wet roads,” said Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe.

Toyo’s Proxes range focuses on high performance sector

Toyo quips that it already has many car-control world records under its ‘steel belt’, and thus the high performance Proxes range needs little introduction to the discerning enthusiast. The name is solely linked to the high performance segment, and Toyo says the Proxes is widely considered to be one of the finest wet-weather and most consistent dry handling tyres available, a tyre chosen by many car manufacturers as an original equipment fitment. German manufacturer Audi, for example, has chosen Toyo Tires to be fitted to several vehicles; the S6, the RS5, the TT, TT-S and TT-RS. Mazda, Toyota and Westfield, to name a few more, are also rolling out of their factories on Proxes OE fitments.

Loader record broken on Bridgestones

World speed records for passenger cars may be approaching the 250mph or 400km/h range, but it is possible to be a record breaker at more modest speeds. Bridgestone reports a Volvo wheel loader fitted with its VHS tyres has broken 103 km/h, creating a new world speed record for this type of vehicle.

Thornleigh fleet gets a Hankook makeover

Thornleigh Freight has announced it is overhauling the look of some of its vehicles, turning them into a striking Hankook branded fleet. Thornleigh Freight has worked with Hankook for over 10 years and has recently signed a new contract to store and distribute Hankook products. To cement the partnership even further Thornleigh Freight also chose to develop some Hankook branded vehicles to form part of their existing fleet.

Hankook acknowledges employees’ long service

Hankook recently celebrated the long service of a number of its employees at the company’s UK head office in Daventry, Northamptonshire. Barrie Horrocks, Hankook UK sales director and Ian Mayoll, UK PCR sales manager were both recognised for their 10 years service at Hankook Tyre UK Ltd. They were joined by several other members of the Hankook team as Tracy Martin (accounts assistant), Liz Coles (credit controller), Ben Francis (franchise manager) and Paul Field (logistics administrator) were also congratulated for their dedication.

Goodyear truck tyres fitted to world’s fastest hybrid

Goodyear has announced that Mean Green, the world’s fastest hybrid truck, has broken two world speed records on its tyres. On 27 April, 2012 at Wendover Airfield in Utah, USA, the Volvo-built truck, owned and driven by Boije Ovebrink, broke records in the standing kilometre and flying kilometre international speed standards. The new world records are subject to FIA recognition, which will occur in about 30 to 60 days.

Hankook records double-digit global growth in Q1

Hankook Tire has reported continued sales growth during the first quarter of 2012. Growth was experienced in North American and European markets, and the company said demand for its ultra high performance tyres had rapidly increased during the first three months of the year. Seung-Hwa Suh, vice chairman & global CEO of Hankook Tire said: “Despite continued global economic downturn, we have been able to set global sales growth and operating profit based on consistent tyre quality improvement as well as brand equity enhancement.

The figures point to a good start to 2012, says Conti

At its Annual Shareholders’ Meeting on 27 April, the Continental Corporation reported a “very good start” to this year. During the first quarter of 2012, the company experienced a double-digit year-on-year growth in sales to 8.3 billion euros, with sales in both its tyre and automotive markets stronger. Reported EBIT, at 766 million euros, exceeded the previous year’s figure considerably, and with a margin of 10.6 per cent, adjusted EBIT before acquisition-related amortisation and special effects amounted to roughly 875 million euros, up from last year’s figure of 734 million euros. Continental will publish its first quarter report in full on 3 May.

Pirelli Diablo Super Biker application available on Android

Pirelli has made its Diablo Super Biker application, launched last August on Apple’s iPhone, can now be used on Android devices. The free app boasts an award received at SMAU 2011 in the Utilities Tools and Productivity category of the Mob App Awards. Pirelli says more than 50,000 bikers have downloaded it.
