Goodyear Appoints Fish as Senior VP of Global Operations

Goodyear has announced the appointment of John “Jack” D. Fish as senior vice president of global operations. Fish replaces Christopher W. Clark, senior vice president of global sourcing, who in June announced his intention to retire after 36 years with Goodyear. Fish will be responsible for overseeing manufacturing and related supply chain activities throughout all of the corporation’s global business units. He will begin work at Goodyear on 5 October, 2009.

Tenneco to Close Nebraska Facility

US based automotive component supplier Tenneco Inc. reports it will close its original equipment ride control plant in Cozad, Nebraska as the company continues to restructure its operations globally. The company expects to begin transferring current customer business to other ride control operations later this year, including Hartwell, Georgia, Paragould, Arkansas, and Celaya, Mexico. Tenneco expects to complete the closure in the fourth quarter 2010. Currently 460 hourly and 40 salaried workers are employed at the Cozad plant; Tenneco states that Impacted employees will receive transitional assistance.

CITEXPO 2009 Officially Opened

This morning the 7th China International Tire Expo (CITEXPO) opened in Shanghai. This year’s event has played host to more than 300 companies in the domestic and international tyre trade. The organisers, Reliable International Exhibition Services, don’t anticipate this year’s event will set a new attendance record, with visitors from the US particularly lacking as a result of the threat of punitive tariffs market for importing Chinese products into the American market. Nevertheless, they are confident the show, running through till Friday, will be a success. Tyres & Accessories/tyrepress.com (along with sister publication Neue Reifenzeitung) is represented with a stand at the exhibition. A detailed report on this leading Chinese tyre trade fair and its exhibitors will follow shortly.

Bridgestone Favours Hard Slicks for San Marino MotoGP

Hot, humid conditions in San Marino on the first day of its Grand Prix have produced a favourable reaction to the hard compound Bridgestone slicks amongst the field. Whilst both options were used during the free practice session to get a feeling for the available grip and balance from each, it was on the harder slicks that the best times were recorded.

Quarry Operator Digs Michelin Tyres

Operating hours are on the up and tyre related breakdowns are becoming scarcer at Hills Quarry Products, and Michelin says its premium XHA and XADN tyres are the culprits behind this positive turn of events. The Hills Group division switched to Michelin products following a trial period and now uses the two types of tyre on the Volvo A25D dump trucks and Volvo L120E and L150F loading shovels in nine-strong quarry fleet.

Judge Sentences, Penalises Rear Tyre

He’s a judge – but when it comes to tyres, he also stands in as jury and executioner. An astounding number of US news sources, including the Washington Post and the NBC network, have picked up on the tale of Charles County, Maryland jurist Robert Nalley. The circuit judge has admitted deflating the tyre of a car parked near his courthouse. One newspaper, the Daily Record, reports that Nalley went to work on the tyre’s valve because he claimed “notes on the windshield did not work.”

Harvie to Retire as Goodyear General Counsel, Successor Named

Come October, Goodyear Tire & Rubber will have a new general counsel following the announcement of incumbent C. Thomas Harvie’s imepnding retirement. Mr. Harvie will retire on October 31 following more than 14 years in the position; Goodyear’s Board of Directors have elected David L. Bialosky, executive vice president, general counsel and secretary of TRW Automotive Holdings as his successor. Bialosky will join Goodyear in late September.

Hankook Tire Doubles Quarterly Operating Profits

Hankook Tire has reported strong second quarter sales of 1,257.3 billion won (£613.945 million; 715.822 million euros; 1.009 billion), up 10.3 per cent from 1,111.7 billion won (£545.693 million; 637.191 million euros; $893.855 million) in the second quarter of 2008. However, the company also recorded a 239.6 per cent increase in quarterly operating profits, which grew from 79.0 billion won to 144.8 billion won (£71.098 million; 82.944 million; $116.456 million) in the second quarters of 2008 and 2009 respectively.

The Hankook Tire China and Hungary operation saw record-high growth that led to a triple-digit percentage increase in its operating profit figures. In particular, the China operation reportedly recorded a 34.8 per cent sales increase quarter-on-quarter due to an increase in consumer demands and OE supplies, in line with the growing Chinese automotive industry. The Hungary operation showed a 44.6% sales increase year-on-year and resulted in operating profits following growth in the European market and cost efficient production.

MotoGP Update – Rossi on Pole for Dutch GP

Fiat Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi has secured pole for the Dutch Grand Prix on Assen’s qualifying TT circuit. His qualifying performance is Rossi’s best of the year, coming in the seventh meeting. Using a medium compound front Bridgestone slick and a soft compound rear he finished 0.085 seconds ahead of Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa and 0.368 seconds clear of teammate Jorge Lorenzo, both of whom also used medium compound front and soft compound rear Bridgestone slicks, making it the closest MotoGP qualifying session since Bridgestone became the series’ Official Tyre Supplier. At one point towards the end of the session, the top five were split by only 0.100 seconds, and a frantic final few minutes changed the order of the front two rows.

Bridgestone says that it has come to be expected this season that most riders set their fastest qualifying times using the harder option front tyre and the softer rear slick. This combination, says the supplier, gives the advantage of improved front stability, especially under braking, and added rear traction which is important for drive out of turn five and the last chicane in particular. Rossi’s pole lap was 0.7 seconds faster than the fastest race lap set around Assen on a MotoGP machine, a 1m 36.738 recorded by Ducati Team’s Casey Stoner on Bridgestone tyres last year.

Bridgestone Art Contest Receives Record Entries

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Using this yardstick, Bridgestone has no less than fifty five and a half million safety and environment related words on its hands: the company reports that at least 55,676 European primary school children participated in its “dreams at heArt” children’s drawing contest during 2009, more than 35 per cent more than last year. Children from twenty-five countries – including for the first time the Baltic States, Slovakia and Romania – sent in drawings of their thoughts and aspirations on the theme “Safe Travel in a Greener World”.

Titan International Announces Q2 Dividend

Titan International’s Board of Directors has approved a quarterly cash dividend of US$.005 (one half cent) per common share for the second quarter of 2009. The cash dividend is payable July 15, 2009, to stockholders of record on June 30, 2009.

Yantai Produces World’s Largest Solid Tyre

A 1.78 metre diameter two-ton solid tyre produced by China’s Yantai C.S.I. Rubber Co. Ltd is being promoted as the world’s largest. The Chinese language website shm.com.cn reports that the Yantai tyre, produced after three years of research and development, beats the previous world record for diameter by 16 centimetres.

The production process for the tyre is said to have taken 22 hours to complete. These large tyres will reportedly be purchased by Caterpillar for fitment on its equipment.

JK Tyre Sponsor Indian National Karting Championship

JK Tyre are to sponsor the fifth JK Tyre Indian National Rotax Max Karting Championship, which begins with its first round of the season at Coimbatore. The championship will take off at the Kari Motor Speedway with the qualifying & heat races to be held on Saturday June 6 and the main races on Sunday June 7, 2009. The winners of the 3 classes will have the honour of being declared the National Rotax Karting Champions of India.

The concept of the championship has been formatted to develop the burgeoning field of Indian motor sports. For the first time several teams will be in the fray for the prestigious event, with Amaron-Meco Pro Kart, Red Rooster, Mohites, Indus, AW, Rayo and Meco-City Kart all taking part. Also, for the first time the entries will have an international flavour, with a Scottish driver and an Iraqi girl participating.

Property Sales a “First Step” Towards New Goodyear HQ

A number of properties belonging to Goodyear Tire & Rubber in its hometown of Akron Ohio have been sold to Industrial Realty Group (IRG). These sales, comments Goodyear, represent a first step toward finalising plans for developing a new headquarters in Akron. The tyre major has signed a multi-year lease agreement with IRG and, as part of this agreement, will remain in its existing buildings until its new headquarters located adjacent to the company’s Akron Technical Center is completed.
