Klarius Responds to DEFRA Report

The UK has the worst road pollution in Europe, according to a recent government report, with 95 per cent of cities exceeding the European Union limits for nitrogen dioxide (NO2). This figure is almost double that of the next worst polluter, Germany, where 52 per cent of cities exceed the limit, followed by Italy with 42 per cent, France (21 per cent) and Spain (14 per cent). While the report by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs warns that the UK will face large fines for breaching the EU limit unless radical measures, such as national road pricing and subsidies for electric cars, are taken, exhaust system manufacturer Klarius firmly believes that the best solution would be to ensure the quality of exhausts and catalytic convertors fitted to the UK’s cars.

Michelin PRM Report Examines Key Company Performance Areas

The fourth edition of the Michelin Group’s Michelin Performance and Responsibility (PRM) report is out. Focusing on the 2007-2008 period, this new report is a summary of the progress the company has achieved in its ‘Michelin Performance and Responsibility’ sustainable development approach – an approach designed around the five stages of the tyre’s life: tyre design, raw materials and purchasing, tyre manufacturing, commercialisation of tyres and tyres in use, and end-of-life recovery.

Bridgestone Predicts Breakeven Net Income

Bridgestone, reports Bloomberg, has reduced its full year prediction to breakeven in line with continuing vehicle sales declines. The manufacturer had previously set its net income forecast at 3 billion yen (£19.1 billion), but in a statement delivered to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the company suggested that the global recession has driven down demand for new vehicles and with it the need for OE tyres. Therefore the company went through with its May promise to revise its targets, concluding that it will sell fewer units in Japan, Europe and America.

However, cost reduction programmes and declining raw materials prices mean that, for the first half of the year, Bridgestone now predicts a loss of 46 billion yen, 16 billion less than the original forecast of a 62 billion yen loss.

Where the Rubber Hits the [Off] Road

The word unique is arguably overused in the tyre business, however in the case of Michelin’s Almeria proving ground it is certainly appropriate. Situated in the south of Spain, Almeria is the largest purpose built EM/OTR test facility in the world, which means Michelin has free reign to put products such as the new XHA2 (see textbox) through all manner of torture in the name of product development. It also provides the valuable opportunity for discrete and detailed original equipment testing, something that vehicle manufacturers will clearly appreciate.

Michelin bought the 4,500-hectares of land the Almeria off-road tyre test facility is now built on in 1977. The site was chosen because it is one of the driest places in Europe with the express purpose of developing it into a centre of excellence for earthmover/off-the-road tyre developments. More than three decades after Michelin moved in, the latest generation of OTR tyres are tested on surfaces ranging from thick mud to sharp objects designed to literally stretch the company’s tyre treads to the limit. In total there are over 100 kilometres of track where automated long term testing “robots” circle various courses ad infinitum to measure durability. Throughout the site modern testing equipment is used on some of the newest and largest machines in the business. For example you can’t miss the fact that Michelin’s Almeria centre is home to the only CAT 797 currently operating in Europe.

Lanxess Gearing Up for World Rubber Day

One hundred years ago, the chemist Fritz Hofmann invented the first ever synthetic rubber. After beavering away with his assistant Carl Coutelle and a research team in their employer’s laboratory in Elberfeld, western Germany, Hofmann produced the flexible substance methyl-isoprene, and in doing so laid the cornerstone for the development of a viable alternative to natural rubber. To honour this invention, Lanxess has established “World Rubber Day”, an occasion that will be celebrated for the first time on September 12, 2009.

India’s ATMA Seeking 7.5% Natural Rubber Duty

India’s national budget is due to be delivered on July 6, and the nation’s tyre manufacturers are hoping that a sought after reduction in natural rubber duty will be forthcoming. “As in the past we are looking forward to the correction of the inverted duty structure,” said Rajiv Budhraja, director-general of India’s Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA). “That is the first and foremost demand.”

According to a Reuter’s news brief, the ATMA has requested the government reduce the customs duty on natural rubber to 7.5 per cent; previous news reports indicated the ATMA was seeking a 10 per cent duty. Regardless of the desired rate, the association’s goal is to provide manufacturers some relief from what is seen as an unfair tax structure. While natural rubber currently attracts a customs duty of 20 per cent, the tax on imported finished tyres is only half that.

Retreads Deliver 30% Lower Carbon Footprint – Study

An independent study commissioned by the Centre for Remanufacturing and Reuse has shown that the process required to manufacture and retreaded tyres produces around 30 per cent less carbon emissions that that required to produce a new tyre.

Testing for the study was carried out by carbon footprint specialists Best Foot Forward and involved the use of new and retreaded 17.5-inch light commercial vehicle tyres. According to the results obtained, the manufacture of a new 17.5-inch tyre produces 86.9 kilograms (191.6 pounds) of CO2 emissions compared to 60.5 kilograms (133.4 pounds) CO2 for an equivalent retreaded tyre; a difference of 30.4 per cent.

Conti to Close Austrian Rubber Mixing Site

Continental has reported the need to ‘respond’ to the continuing downturn experienced by OE and replacement passenger car tyre markets – a market which currently has a production overcapacity of more than 18 million tyres in Europe. As a consequence, the company states, the demand for raw materials is also markedly lower.

“Today, Tuesday, we are informing workers at the Traiskirchen site (in Austria) that we are forced to phase out the mixing and gumming activities in Traiskirchen, which employs a total of 195, by the end of this year,” explained Dr. Bernhard Trilken, in charge of worldwide production for the Continental Passenger and Light Truck Tires division, on June 16.

Cooper Texarkana Plant Earns Environmental Certification

Cooper Tire & Rubber’s Texarkana facility, located in the US state of Arkansas, has been granted the IS0 14001 environmental management system certification. Adherence to the ISO 14001 standard, which specifies requirements for a facility’s environmental management system, is intended to help minimise a facility’s impact on the environment through the use of standardised processes and regular performance audits.

“Earning this certification demonstrates the commitment by our Texarkana plant to operating an environmentally friendly facility,” said Carl Montalbine, vice president of Global Quality, Operational Excellence and Information Technology. “Especially as all of us are trying to conserve energy, reduce waste and preserve the environment, we felt that attaining this ‘green’ standard was simply the right thing to do.”

Sunday Times Names Bandvulc One of Top 60 Green Companies

Bandvulc Tyres Ltd has been recognised as one of the Top 60 Best Green Companies in the UK by the Sunday Times. At the annual awards ceremony in London, Bandvulc’s managing director Patrick O’Connell received the award from Alistair McColl (Sunday Times Supplements Editor) for achieving a top 60 placement.

Patrick O’Connell commented: “This is fantastic recognition of the hard work and commitment everyone at Bandvulc makes to ensuring we all have a sustainable future. Goodyear ‘Poised for Significant Earnings Improvement’

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company reported first quarter 2009 sales of $3.5 billion, down from record sales of $4.9 billion in first quarter of 2008. However, Goodyear only reported net losses of $333 million, compared with Goodyear net income of $147 million (60 cents per share) in the 2008 quarter. While obviously significant the losses certainly weren’t as bad as they could have been for two reasons. Firstly, they were, according to financial news sources, ahead of mainstream analysts’ opinions; and secondly because the total losses are roughly equal to the increases in raw material costs the company experienced in the first quarter ($332 million, up 31 per cent). The explanation for greatly reduced turnover was said to be the tyre market’s sharply reduced demand at the start of 2009, however as various sources are predicting that the US market has bottomed-out and raw material prices are believed to have stabilised, Goodyear could be in for a better second half of 2009.

This view is certainly supported by Deutsche Bank analysts who sent out an investor’s note along these lines a week after Goodyear’s results were published. Despite reporting losses of $333 million in the first quarter of 2009 Deustche Bank analysts predict a short to medium term improvement in Goodyear’s financial performance: “Subtracting $1.38 billion (around $36 a tyre) of raw material costs from Goodyear’s first quarter 2009 results, and $1.33 billion ($28 per tyre) of raw materials from Goodyear’s first quarter 2008 results, we noted that GT’s non-raw material costs of goods sold declined to $1.6 billion from $2.2 billion.”

Apollo Net Profit Down 52%

Apollo Tyres’ India operations profits were less than half that of last year according to the year-end financial report released today by the manufacturer (April 2008-March 2009). While net sales grew 10 per cent from 36.9 billion to 40.7 billion rupees in the period, operating profit came down to 3.3 billion from 4.7 billion rupees and net profit more than halved from 2.1 billion to 1 billion rupees. Despite the relative gloom of the full year figures, Apollo came closer to matching the January-March 2008 quarterly operating profit in the same period this year, down merely 40 million rupees from 2.14 billion to 2.1 billion. The board of directors recommended a dividend payout of 45 per cent to shareholders.

March Sales Give Pirelli a Glimmer of Hope

Upon reporting its first quarter 2009 financials, Pirelli commented that its tyre division experienced “signs of recovery” in March; these indications of better times came in the form of a slowdown in sales decline in some countries and positive growth rates in others. Various government incentives to boost new car sales partly contributed to this reversal of fortune following OE business contraction in the first two months of the year, Pirelli comments.

Boto Tyre to Build New Passenger Car Radial Factory

Shandong Wanda Boto Tyre Co., Ltd., has revealed plans to build a passenger car production facility nearby its existing tyre manufacturing complex in China. Speaking to Tyres & Accessories company representatives explained how, despite the ongoing economic downturn, Boto Tyre's board and shareholders are confident that they can sell the up to 15 million passenger car radials the new plant is scheduled to produce. Around 1 billion yuan is believed to have been earmarked for the expansion and building work is set to begin in June, with the construction project expected to conclude by the end of the year. As vice director of international trade development, Rainbow Zhao told T&A “building projects don't take very long in China.”
