Vipal expanding across Europe

At the end of 2014, Brazilian retreading material supplier Vipal reported that it had opened a UK distribution centre in the East Anglian port of Felixstowe. However, the recent opening is more than just an example of an expanding operation in one European market, rather it is an example of how the company is growing across the continent. Tyres & Accessories met up with Vipal Europe general manager Alessandro Campos and East and region sales representative, Michal Baxa at the company’s new distribution facility to find out more.

IRSG: Rubber demand to grow 1.8 per cent in 2015

The Secretariat of the International Rubber Study Group (IRSG) has published its annual report, which suggests total world rubber demand will increase at 1.8 per cent and 4.1 per cent in 2015 and 2016 respectively. This is below the long-term growth rate of 3.7 per cent under the IMF Scenario (the report refers to three scenarios – IMF, downside and oil price) to 29.1 million tonnes in 2015 and to 30.3 million tonnes in 2016.

Thai government propping up rubber prices with US$183 milion of support

The Thai government is buying rubber from the market via a 6 billion baht (US$183 million) buffer fund to support prices. According to a Reuters report, a private fund has also been set up to support domestic rubber futures.

Apollo to establish Singapore base, redesignates Sarkar as chief business officer

Asia is an enticing part of the world for many tyre makers, including Apollo Tyres, which has stated its desire to make inroads there. A small but significant step it has taken into the region is the relocation of incumbent president and chief financial officer Sunam Sarkar to Singapore. Sarkar’s arrival will likely be followed by the establishment of an office in the city state, and – although Apollo hasn’t yet made any official announcement to this effect – he seems the logical choice to oversee the operation set up there. A secondary function of Apollo’s new presence in Singapore will be to aid its sourcing of raw materials in Asia; the subject of rubber is a high profile one for tyre makers in India, and despite the higher duty affixed to natural rubber compared to finished tyres, manufacturers rely heavily on imports of this raw material.

PanAridus ships guayule-derived rubber to Cooper

US-based bioscience company PanAridus recently announced granting of its ninth US Department of Agriculture (USDA) plant variety patent and the first tyre quality, bale-sized shipment of its guayule-derived biorubber. The announcement was made by company CEO Mike Fraley at the recent International Tyre Exhibition and Conference in Akron.

Mesnac buys synthetic rubber producer

Tyre equipment manufacturer Mesnac has acquired Fushun Yikesi New Material, a Chinese producer of synthetic rubber and resin products, for the sum of US$60 million, according to reports. The acquisition gives the company entry into the rubber raw materials side of the industry.

Goodyear using rice husk ash in tyre manufacturing

Rice husk waste once headed for landfills is now helping The Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Company produce fuel-efficient tyres. Goodyear today announced it will utilise ash left over from the burning of rice husks to produce electricity as an environmentally friendly source of silica for use in its tyres.

Smit: Cut rubber trees to manage price

Dr Hidde P Smit, former secretary general of International Rubber Study Group (IRSD) and rubber market analyst, has suggested tree-felling and reduced tapping in order slow falling rubber prices.

Delivering the key-note address at the sixth edition of India Rubber Summit & Dinner 2014 organised by Rubber Asia in Kochi, India on 21 September 2014, he predicted that the low price regime could continue for the rest of the decade and even beyond. He said any intensive rubber planting done now could lead to a glut in natural rubber (NR) market after six years, bringing the prices down further. He added that world NR consumption is expected to touch 18.6 million tonnes by 2025, while NR supply may exceed demand at 19.3 million tonnes by 2025 and 20.2 million tonnes by 2030. However Indian market representatives disagreed, pointing to the Indian example and suggesting the rising supply deficit could be bridged only by boosting production.

Nynas exec to explain how Naphthenic tyre oils boost performance

Thorsten Lutze, global market manager for Tyre Oil at Nynas AB has announced that he will offer a presentation on the role and contribution of naphthenic oils in today’s global tyre market on 21 August 2014. The speech, which focuses on how naphthenic oils can help boost tyre performance, will take place at 11:40 am as part of the 8th Global Rubber and Tire Markets conference at the Meridien hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Michelin to close Budapest truck tyre factory

In response to volatility in the European truck tyre market, a segment that remains 23 per cent below its 2007 historic peak, this morning Michelin announced the planned closure of its truck tyre plant in Budapest, Hungary. Alongside such market factors, Michelin says the facility, acquired as part of its purchase of Taurus Rubber in 1996, is located in an urban area and cannot be further expanded; any other measures to improve its competitiveness would require what Michelin considers an “excessive” upgrade with new equipment. The closure will see the loss of 512 jobs.

Goodyear posts Q1 results, confirms targets

While Goodyear Tire & Rubber has expressed satisfaction with the US$373 segment operating income earned in the first quarter of 2014, chairman and CEO Richard Kramer acknowledged the effect of ‘headwinds’ in emerging markets during the three-month period, particularly the impact of Venezuela on the company’s Latin America business. Segment operating income was up 24 per cent year-on-year and had a margin of 8.3 per cent; this is the fourth consecutive quarter where SOI margin has exceeded eight per cent.
