Matador Tyre Sport at the Wales Rally GB

Matador Tyre Sport is looking forward continuing its centenary celebrations by participating in the fortcoming Wales Rally GB. According to the company, Matador’s long-term success as original equipment supplier to Skoda has lead to the use of the Skoda World Rally Car for the Welsh rally.

Last year Matador tyre sport won the BTRDA championship. This time around the team will be placing its hopes upon “up and coming star” Craig Middleton and his co driver Robin Hernaman.
Rally GB spectators will be given the opportunity to view a copy of the new Matador Skoda S2000 close up on a display in front of the VIP stand at the event.

World stage for launch of Hankook Motorsports at Wales Rally GB

Tyre giant Hankook has this week unveiled plans to compete at the very highest levels – starting with Wales Rally GB.

The company has joined forces with Warwick-based Silverline Motorsport to offer a dedicated motorsport service for rallying and racing in the UK.
And to launch the new venture in style, Hankook Motorsports has entered three drivers into three different classes in the British round of the World Rally Championship.

Pirelli Sweeps Baja Truck Category

Pirelli PS22 tyres swept the board in the Baja Aragon, round of the FIA Rally-Raid World Cup, at the end of July with two Iveco Eurocargo 140E24 WS trucks of Team Motorsport Italia crewed by local drivers Selga-Torra and Roque-Asurmendi-Diamante, taking first and second places respectively in the truck category of the event, preceding the third placed Mercedes-Benz 1844 AK on Pirelli, driven by Spain’s Oliveras-Campa/Capsada. The news comes six months after Markku Alen’s seventh place in the 2005 Paris-Dakar driving a Pirelli PS22-shod Iveco Eurocargo and Miki Biasion’s great performance in a similar vehicle on Pirelli until a simple technical problem stopped him from finishing the race, and the second place in Turkey’s Rally of the Orient, last June.

Pirelli Working to Beat Michelin.

Peugeot boss, Jean-Pierre Nicolas has predicted that they will have a ‘real chance’ to win in Argentina next weekend – and has announced that the team will introduce a new tyre at the Rally Finland in August.

Silverstone Produces More ‘Premier Tyres’

Silverstone Bhd has expanded its range of premier tyres to remain competitive in the market, according to managing director Phang Wai Yeen.

“We have been paying lot of attention to research and development since our inception in 1990 and that is why we have been making headway in the luxury and motor sport segments,” Mr Phang said during a visit by Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin to the company’s plant in Kamunting, near Taiping.

BFGoodrich to Compete in World Rally Championship

The 2006 World Rally Championship will not be a battle between Pirelli and Michelin, but BFGoodrich and Pirelli. The French manufacturer has decided to substitute Michelin name for the brand that uses to compete in the Rally Raid World Cup.

Winning start by Team MRF in Australia

The first round of the 2005 Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) that was run as the Subaru Rally, Canberra, Australia kicked up plenty of dust in more ways than one. When the dust and din settled, debutant Jussi Valimaki (co-driver Jarkko Kalliolepo) from Finland, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII for Team MRF Tyres (India), emerged as the winner. However, the 30-year old Finn, nicknamed “Fast Jussi” had to wait for the several hours that it took the Stewards to conduct scrutiny and then exclude first placed Toshi Arai of Japan.

An obviously elated Valimaki said: “This was a good first rally with a new team, new car and new tyres and I’m very happy with the result. I am sure with some more time we can get faster – it’s the biggest win of my career.”

Tyre Choice the Key to Loeb’s Victory

Sebastien Loeb drove his Michelin clad Citroen to victory yesterday in Rally New Zealand.

At the finish the 31-year-old reigning world champion had a 49.8 seconds margin over Finn Marcus Gronholm in a Peugeot with last year’s winner, Subaru’s Petter Solberg, a further 18.9 seconds back in third place.

The Norwegian Solberg still leads the drivers’ championship after four rounds by one point from Loeb with Peugeot’s Markko Martin two points further back.

The heat of New Zealand’s summer put further pressure on Michelin and Citroen to
“At Citroen we have worked over the year on this type of gravel. We changed a bit of everything since last year, said Loeb.”

“We changed the suspension, the engine and we also have some new version of the tyre. This means the car is really feeling perfect and it’s looking good for the future.”

Cooper Strike Update

(Texarkana/Tire Review) Roughly 1,000 people turned out for a union-organised rally supporting the 1,600 workers that went on strike nearly a week ago at Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.’s Texarkana, Arkansas plant. David Boone, union president, said the union’s executive committee received a 95 per cent backing in a vote granting the authority to call a strike.

Pirelli 1-2-3 in Mexico Rally

Pirelli-shod cars swept the board in the Rally Mexico in mid-March, taking all three podium places.
Out in front was the Subaru of Petter Solberg, who led from start to finish for his second victory of the year. He won six out of the 14 all-gravel stages, finishing 34.5 seconds ahead of the Pirelli-equipped Peugeots of Marcus Gronholm and Markko Martin.

2005, Pirelli’s Year of Innovation

While exhibiting at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show, Pirelli highlighted 2005 as “the year of innovation.” In the wake of strong business results (the company recently reported a 42 per cent increase in operating profit), Pirelli Tyres reports that it has begun 2005 with a strategy of expansion in some of the faster growing emerging markets plus North America, as well as extending its MIRS automated production process in the United Kingdom, Germany and the US. And that is not all. The company says that its research into tyres of the future will reach concrete conclusions in 2005. Pirelli goes on to explain that this year will see the start of a series of products that will “revolutionise the concept of the tyre, which will become a more active product that ever before, and will be able to communicate with the car and driver.”

Changing Strategy in Siberia

A changing market environment and growing consumer demand in Russia has encouraged Matador to target the increasing opportunities offered by the market. The Slovakian tyre manufacturer is preparing for the future by initiating a new brand strategy and further investments into its Russian joint venture in Omsk. 2005 is an appropriate year for Matador to contemplate future development of its tyre business, as it will celebrate two important anniversaries during the coming months. In May the company will celebrate its 10th year at the Russian factory Omskshina, followed by its 100th anniversary in the autumn.

Solberg and Pirelli Win Swedish Rally

The combination of Pirelli’s new studs and Petter Solberg’s driving has brought Michelin’s Swedish rally winning streak to an end. Before this year, the French manufacturer’s run stretched all the way back to 1997. ”Despite the difficult conditions, our P Zero J1 tyres won the rally and the overwhelming majority of the stages,” said Pirelli tyre rally manager Fiore Brivio, speaking at the finish. The race winner was quick to thank the Italian tyre firm: ”There are so many people to thank, everyone from [co-driver] Phil Mills, to the guys who work on my car, to Pirelli who have built such an incredible tyre, and the supporters out on the stages who cheered us along. Thanks so much to all of you!”

Pirelli Confirms 2005 Motorsport Involvement

Pirelli Tyres has confirmed its continued involvement with motorsport series across the British Isles. In the 2005 season the manufacturer will support the Kwik Fit Pirell British Rally Championship, The Irish Tarmac Championship and the Maranello Ferrari Challenge, to name but three.
