Pirelli Star Driver Kicks off for 2010

The second season of the Pirelli Star Driver programme gets underway on April 15 at the Rally of Turkey, and Pirelli Star Driver supervisor Phil Short anticipates his fresh charges’ first taste of World Rally Championship action will teach them plenty. “I’ve already suggested to them that they treat the Rally of Turkey as an extended test session, to get more distance and time in the car under their belts – and to think about bringing the cars to the finish with a solid result,” he advised, adding: “You don’t learn too much when your car is on a trailer.”

Pirelli to Supply WRC for Another Year

The FIA has extended its World Rally Championship (WRC) control tyre deal with Pirelli for another year, reportedly enabling it to take another year to decide whether or not to open up the series up to competing tyre makers in 2012. Pirelli was the only firm to tender for the 2011-2013 contract, but Autosport reported that the FIA and Pirelli reached a “single season solution” in talks.

Cooper Tires British Formula Three Series Starts Easter Weekend

Cooper is looking forward to another season as title-sponsor and tyre-supplier to the British Formula Three Series. The company says that British F3 is one of the world’s most successful championships for aspiring Formula One drivers; with stars including Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton all racing in the series on their way to F1, it isn’t difficult to back up that claim. Most recently the last two champions have leapt straight to F1 – 2008 title winner Jaime Alguersuari now races with the Toro Rosso team while last year’s champion, Daniel Ricciardo, has been appointed official reserve driver for both Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso in 2010.

Although the Malatesta name may not be as widely-known as the brands owned and promoted by the major new tyre manufacturers, the company behind this Italian produced range of retreads, Malatesta Pneumatici, boasts a long and solid history. The firm was founded in Rome shortly after the end of the Second World War, at a time when new tyres were in short supply and any means of keeping existing tyres on the road was highly valued. Company founder Alberto Malatesta built Malatesta Pneumatici into a strong player in the Italian retreading scene before handing control of the business over to eldest son Massimiliano. Today a third generation of the family is also contributing to the future of Malatesta Pneumatici.

Exide Commits to Continued Team Solberg WRC Sponsorship

Exide Technologies has announced the continued sponsorship of Henning Solberg in the World Rally Championship. The company’s Norwegian subsidiary has sponsored Solberg since 1993 and this sponsorship was broadened to include Exide’s entire European Transportation organisation several years ago. As part of the company’s sponsorship, Exide Technologies provides the with Exide batteries for its vehicles. Solberg and co-driver Cato Menkerud will again sport Exide logos on their uniforms and car.

Group Aiming to Help Save Donington Race Track with Rally

A rally is to take place at Donington Race Track on Sunday 7 March, 2010 in an attempt to secure the Castle Donington facility’s future. The Facebook group behind the rally, set up by schoolteacher and racing fan Lee Coombs, has nearly 12,000 members, meaning the rally has a good chance of a high attendance – the latest estimate being 10,000 attendees, according to Derby’s Evening Telegraph. The event will be attended by the current owner Kevin Wheatcroft, who is said to be in talks with several potential investors keen to restart racing at the venue. Wheatcroft will attend the event, a source told Tyrepress.com, at which he is expected to make an announcement about Donnington’s future.

Tyre Selection Gamble Leaves Loeb Adrift in WRC Sweden

Mikko Hirvonen won the Rally of Sweden stage of the World Rally Championship, after his nearest rival and 2009 champion Sebastien Loeb chose to hold onto his worn tyres at stage 14. Hirvonen changed the Pirelli tyres on his Ford and opened up a 6.2-second gap, finally ending the second day 16 seconds ahead of Loeb, whose change to new front tyres at the next stage saw his challenge effectively ended: “Having new tyres at the front and destroyed ones at the rear was worse than have four destroyed ones,” he said. The margin widened during the latter stages of the third day, allowing the Finn to claim victory for BPFord AbuDhabi WRT.

Kumho Australian Rally Supply Begins with Successful Testing

Kumho has successfully completed preseason tests on its tyre selections for the Australian Rally Championship. The R900, designed for compacted gravel, the R800 for loose gravel and the wet-weather and muddy conditions R700 all impressed drivers with their high levels of grip, longevity and predictability having used them in the scorching temperatures of a Melbourne heat wave.

World Rally Championship to Tie Up Pirelli Deal Until 2013: Reports

Reports on Wednesday 3 February suggest that Pirelli is about to be confirmed as the tyre supplier for the World Rally Championship after its current deal runs out at the end of the 2010 season. An anonymous source for Autosport's report suggests that the Italian manufacturer is in fact “the only firm in the running for the contract. We saw that when the envelope with the tenders in was opened last year.” Autosport also states that the value of the company’s bid is likely to be some way short of the 11 million euros paid as part of the current three-year deal. The final decision will be made at a World Motorsport Council meeting in March.

Off-Road Tour Company Selects Cooper Discoverer STT tyres

All Terrain Tours, an off-road tour company (as the name suggests) has chosen Cooper’s Discoverer STT tyres for use in the Northern English countryside. Started earlier this year by Tony Newton and Mark Langley, All Terrain Tours allows owners of off-road vehicles to use them away from asphalt roads on legally accessible “green lanes”, with prices starting at around £45. Langley’s Land Rover Defender and Newton’s Land Rover Discovery will have the Cooper tyres fitted as they lead tours across some of England’s most remote and beautiful countryside. The company promotes safe and responsible use of four-wheel drive vehicles in the countryside, with routes available for most 4x4s.

As a brand somewhat synonymous with glamour and flare, Pirelli and the Autosport International Show are an excellent fit. The Italian brand took the opportunity of the 2010 show to display its vast array of motorsport tyres and Pirelli seemed sure that one particular model was turning the most heads among the 85,000 visitors. The P Zero Trofeo proved, in Pirelli’s opinion, to be “the toast” of this year’s show.

Autosport International Show Celebrates 20 Years

The much-hyped snow storm that turned much of the United Kingdom white earlier in the month did not prevent Autosport International, Europe’s largest motorsport trade show, from celebrating its 20th anniversary in style at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, UK, on 14-17 January 2010. Reportedly, over 85,000 visitors made the trip to the West Midlands, helping trade to increase by 10 per cent on the previous year in spite of the weather. Perhaps a general thawing in the global economic situation was more on the minds of visitors than the snow drifts hastily formed by NEC staff clearing the car parks for visitors when Tyres & Accessories arrived on Thursday 14 January to take in stands representing tyre manufacturers Dunlop, Pirelli, Yokohama and Hoosier Tire, as well as the many other automotive products and servicing equipment on display.

Pirelli Shod Hirvonen Ford Takes Monte Carlo Rally Honours

Pirelli celebrated a first place finish at the weekend’s Monte Carlo Rally with partner Ford and driver Mikko Hirvonen following a successful debut of the Ford Fiesta Super 2000, the only car officially fitted by Pirelli in the event. Leading from the start, Pirelli says the Finnish rally star was able to easily overcome the challenges of changing road conditions in his Ford Fiesta Super 2000 thanks to the Winter Sottozero and P Zero tyres it was fitted with – tyres capable of adapting to all the conditions encountered, from the ice in the mountain passes to the dry coastal asphalt.
