Yokohama Sponsoring "Asia Cross Country Rally 2010"

Yokohama Rubber has pledged its support for the Asia Cross Country Rally 2010, which will be held in Thailand between August 7 and 11. This is the tenth time the tyre maker has been involved with the FIA certified cross country rally, the largest in Asia, and Yokohama will provide its Geolandar tyres to all entrants in the newly established sports class category and award prizes to the winners in all categories. It will also support many drivers, including Takuma Aoki, who will participate in the T2-D class (non-converted commercial diesel) and Tadamitsu Niihori, the race’s overall winner on two previous occasions.

HiQ Readies Intrepid Vanners for Asian Charity Road Trip

If Ranulph Fiennes was planning a 10,000 mile road trip across Asia, he probably wouldn’t select a Daihatsu Hijet van as his vehicle of choice. But four students have spurned the Land Rover and other rugged machines trusted by explorers in favour of this Japanese microvan. It’s probably just as well then that they made a last minute visit to a fast fit centre in Plymouth to get everything ship shape.

Hankook's Andreas Mikkelsen Gains IRC Points in Azores

Hankook driver Andreas Mikkelsen celebrated after an eventful finale to the Stat Rallye Acores over the weekend resulting in an impressive fourth overall. During the three day event the Hankook crew of Mikkelsen and co-driver Ole Fløene recorded their maiden IRC fastest time and challenged more experienced teams on their first visit to the island and only their second rally on gravel using the M-Sport Ford Fiesta S2000 on Hankook tyres.

The Norweigen rally ace was comfortably running in the top five on the IRC event until a herd of cows, that had strayed, obstructed the stage causing Mikkelsen to hit them, consequently damaging the crews Ford Fiesta S2000. When speaking about the incident Mikkelsen said: "We were flat-out in sixth-gear and 50 metres after a big crest there was eight or ten cows in the middle of the road. We had to put the car into the ditch where we hit two of the cows. It was a scary moment."

Loeb On Top With Pirelli In Bulgaria

Borovets in Bulgaria was home to the tough 220.03 mile course of Rally Bulgaria, round seven of the 2010 World Rally Championship, of which Pirelli is the exclusive tyre supplier under a three-year agreement with the FIA, motorsport's world governing body.

It was the threat of unpredictable weather that made the availability of the soft compound Pirelli P Zero tyre essential for the competing crews. On gravel events, WRC regulations restrict drivers to a pre-determined compound of Pirelli's Scorpion tyre. On asphalt events, they can choose between the hard (for dry conditions) or soft (for wet conditions) compound P Zero, albeit with a restriction of 40 covers in total. In Bulgaria, they had an allocation of 34 hard compound tyres and 24 soft compound tyres, eight more than usual, following reports of possible thunderstorms.

Celebs Draw Crowds to Bridgestone Eco Rally

Hundreds of people turned out to see celebrities and politicians try their hand at eco-driving when the Bridgestone Eco-Rally travelled from Brighton to London’s Hyde Park on 7 July. F1 fans in particular lined the streets to get a glimpse of F1 heroes, such as Nico Hulkenberg, Eddie Irvine and Patrick Head, just days before the Silverstone Grand Prix. Other celebrities included Kevin McCloud, Quentin Wilson and Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne.

The Bridgestone Eco-Rally showcased the latest in low and zero emission vehicle technology and included a full range of eco-vehicles from the Gutsi Zero Bus to the Honda CR-Z hybrid. The Ford Fusion world record-breaking hybrid also took part, representing Ford's electrification plans for Europe.

Bridgestone Poll Suggests UK Drivers are Sceptical about Eco-Friendly Cars

In a recent online poll conducted on behalf of Bridgestone to coincide with the company’s 2010 Eco Rally, almost a quarter of people (23 per cent) in the UK would not consider buying or driving an eco-friendly vehicle. Of that number, more than four in ten (42 per cent) believe electric or hydrogen-powered cars and motorbikes would be a hassle to fill up or charge. The 2010 Bridgestone Eco Rally takes place on Wednesday, 7 July and showcases the latest in low and zero emission vehicle technology in a convoy from Brighton – which contains the first UK constituency to elect an MP from the Green Party – to London’s Hyde Park.

WRC Supply Open to All Tyre Makers in 2011

As of 2011, tyre supply to the FIA World Rally Championship is will be open to any tyre manufacturer. On June 23 the FIA gave public notice that the regulations covering tyre supply have been amended to “control costs”. These altered regulations will be presented to the World Motor Sport Council for a fax vote before July 20. The FIA Junior World Rally Championship will, however, continue with a single tyre supplier.

The Italian manufacturer will supply all F1 teams from 2011 to 2013, and no additional funds are required in order to do so.

Bridgestone Brings F1 Personalities to 2010 Eco-Rally

Bridgestone’s Eco-Rally 2010 will feature appearances from Ross Brawn, Patrick Head and Nico Hulkenberg with more names to be announced. Now in its fourth year, the Bridgestone Eco-Rally takes place on Wednesday 7 July and will showcase all the latest in low and zero emission vehicle technology in a convoy from Brighton’s seafront to London’s Hyde Park. At the finish line, it will join the UK’s largest sustainable transport exhibition, free to attend, at the Royal Albert Memorial.

Report: Hankook Considering Formula One Supply

Hankook Tyres is reportedly planning to supply its tyres to Formula One racing teams “within a few years.” The Australian Brisbane Times quotes Hankook executive vice president, Hyun Bum Cho, as saying: “In the future we want to have some hefty market share in that [racing] segment. It’s quite profitable…but in order to really leverage from motorsports in terms of brands, you need to participate in either World Rally Championship or a very high segment in Le Mans, or Formula One…So in the future that’s the target that we have, to participate in those segments.”

Challenge Bibendum Gets Underway Sunday

On Sunday May 30 the 10th Michelin Challenge Bibendum gets underway. This year the five-day event is being held in Rio de Janeiro, and Michelin states that during the course of the week it will present future generations of its low fuel consumption tyres, the first prototype tyres for electric vehicles (which can reportedly increase vehicle operating range by almost ten per cent) and motorised wheels plus the Michelin Active Wheel, both products intended to optimise the design of electric and hybrid vehicles.

New Maxxis PCR Tyres, European Catalogue Debut at Reifen 2010

Tyre manufacturer Maxxis is showcasing a number of new passenger car tyres and launching its new European product catalogue at this year’s Reifen exhibition in Essen, Germany (1 – 4 June). With the focus on wet grip and low rolling resistance, Maxxis will be exhibiting a new passenger car tyre, a new UHP pattern and an addition to its winter tyre range, as well as the new R19, a purpose-designed rally tyre. There will also be a selection of heavy and light truck tyres on display, according to the company.

Pirelli Returns to Single-Seater Racing at Spanish GP

Pirelli is to supply tyres for single-seater racing for the first time since 1991 in the new GP3 Series, which will support Formula One’s Spanish Grand Prix on 7-9 May. The Italian manufacturer says it will use the event to submit a tender to supply Formula One from next season. Pirelli will be the sole supplier for GP3, which the manufacturer says has been pitched as “a stepping-stone to GP2, a direct feeder category to Formula One”. The supply agreement is the most clear indication of Pirelli’s intentions for the Formula One tyre supply slot due to be vacated by Bridgestone at the end of the 2010 season.

Bridgestone Announces Sponsorship of 2010 Eco Rally

Bridgestone has announced that it will sponsor a rally of low and zero emission vehicles: the 2010 Brighton to London Eco-Rally. The company says it will bring along well-known Formula One names on Wednesday 7 July, when the convoy of vehicles will travel the famous Veteran Car Run in reverse, driving from Brighton’s seafront to London’s Hyde Park. At the park, the rally will join a green transport exhibition, free to attend, at the Royal Albert Memorial.
