Yokohama adds three series to 2011 UK motorsport agenda

Yokohama HPT has confirmed that it will continue to work in partnership with one-make race series in the UK in 2011 and add a further three series to its portfolio of championships choosing Yokohama as control tyre. The company will supply control tyres to almost 30 race series. Commenting, head of Motorsport at YHPT Mark Evans said; “It looks as if 2011 will be an even busier season for Yokohama than last year and I am delighted that our involvement in motorsport is growing, both on a global and a domestic level. I am very pleased that we are continuing our relationships with some of the UK’s premier series, on the racetrack, rallycross circuits and oval tracks. I’m also excited by the prospect of supporting several new series, such as the VTEC Challenge and the new rallycross categories.”

Yokohama introduces new rally tyre to the UK

Yokohama HPT has announced a new motorsport tyre for the UK. The Yokohama A053 is a brand new gravel rally tyre, developed during the 2010 season as the manufacturer partnered the Intercontinental
Rally Challenge. The A053 is designed to compliment the A035, featuring a completely new construction and tread pattern. Designed for all loose surface applications, it will be available in three compounds; super soft, soft and medium to cope with the widest range of gravel stage conditions. The A053 will replace both sizes of the preceding A035E, in 195 and 205 widths.

Foj Completes 20th Dakar Race with Toyota Cooper Tires Team

Xavier Foj is one of the most experienced Dakar racers with this year marking is twentieth time, as he and co-driver Pablo Jaton steered their Cooper Tires-shod Toyota Land Cruiser safely through what Foj called “almost unbearable” conditions. The Toyota Cooper Tires team’s lead vehicle claimed 19th position overall in this year’s gruelling Dakar race.

Pirelli 2010’s ‘Most Recommended’ Tyre Brand

Data from tyre market research specialists Encircle Marketing shows that Pirelli was the most recommended brand in 2010. The analysis by Encircle Marketing, which continuously monitors brand recommendations found that Pirelli came top with eight per cent of all recommendations, up by almost half a point on its 2009 performance.

Two new motorsport tyres will be launched into the UK market at the company’s show stand (stand number 2740) and Yokohama will also confirm its motorsport involvement for 2011.

Pirelli's to Focus on F1 at Autosport

Pirelli has announce plans to promote its recent return to Formula One (F1) sponsorship with an Autosport International stand showcasing the Italian tyre manufacturer’s historic and future involvement in Formula One.

According to the company, fans will be “thrilled by the two tier stand, which alongside F1 engineering masterpieces, will be displaying a host of other attractions and activities including a GT Cup car and the Pirelli simulator.” British Rally Championship Star Driver Elfyn Evans will also be in attendance with his rally car for the 2011 season, alongside the world famous Pirelli girls.

Cooper Extends Dakar Rally Involvement

Cooper Tire has developed an online game to celebrate its expanded involvement in the Dakar Rally 2011. Cooper Tire has doubled its backing of the Toyota Cooper Tire squad for the 2011 running of the event, with the Land Cruiser KXR of Xavier Foj and Pablo Jaton joined by a Hi-Lux, piloted by Jesus Calleja and Ignacio Santamaria. Last year, the single car of Foj/Jaton finished second in the T2 Production class.

Dmack Completes WRC Testing and Releases Range Information

Cooper Tire Expands Dakar Rally Assault for 2011

Cooper Tire will back an expanded team in the 2011 Dakar Rally as it aims to go one better than its debut attempt in the 2010 event. The Toyota Cooper Tire outfit finished second in the T2 Diesel class and 16th overall this January, but veteran Dakar pilot, Xavier Foj, is aiming to take the class victory in 2011. Spaniard Foj and his co-driver, Pablo Jaton, will once again compete for the team in a Toyota Land Cruiser KXR and they will be joined by a second duo – Spanish TV personality Jesus Calleja and co-driver, Ignacio Santamaria.

Pirelli Completes WRC Tyre Supply Commitment

The conclusion of the Wales Rally GB on November 14 also marked the end of Pirelli’s time as official tyre supplier to the FIA World Rally Championship. As of 2011 the WRC is being opened up to multiple tyre suppliers, and this change in regulations helped Pirelli decide to focus its motorsport energies on Formula One as of next year. Despite this, the Italian tyre maker views its three years’ WRC involvement as a very successful time, and Pirelli will continue its commitment to rallying through supporting the new WRC Academy, which replaces the Junior World Rally Championship as the first port of call for drivers aspiring to one day become world champion. The company will also provide the opportunity for six young drivers to contest the series as part of the Pirelli Star Driver programme, which it has supported for the last two seasons.

Kumho Sees Mortara Win Euro F3 Series to Crown “Successful” Motorsport Season

Kumho has been the official tyre supplier to the Formula Three Euro Series since 2003. The newly-crowned 2010 Euro F3 champion on Kumho’s slicks is Edoardo Mortara. He contested the series previously in 2008, then had a year in GP2 before returning to F3 this year. He holds duel Italian and French nationality but races under the Italian flag and is responsible for two firsts for the series: the first victory for the French Signature team and the first for a VW-engined car. As official supplier, Kumho makes some 10,000 tyres available to the series per annum.

With Formula One’s Drivers Championship still in the balance heading to the final meeting in Abu Dhabi – Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel and technically Lewis Hamilton are all in with a chance – Bridgestone is getting the epic final season it surely hoped for. Abu Dhabi also represents a landmark for the new tyre supplier for 2011, as Pirelli will display and test its new tyre during the weekend, following lengthy tests with F1 drivers Nick Heidfeld, Roman Grosjean and latterly Pedro de la Rosa. Tyres & Accessories spoke to Pirelli’s Motorsport director, Paul Hembery about the advantages of being involved in Formula One, and what can be expected in the next three years while Pirelli is supplying the sport’s tyres.

Yokohama Celebrates 100 WTC Races in “Incredibly Busy” Motorsport Year

Japanese tyre manufacturer Yokohama celebrated its 100th race as official tyre supplier to the FIA World Touring Car Championship earlier this year, having supplied the control tyre to the series since 2006. Commenting on the season, Yokohama HPT’s Motorsport manager, Mark Evans, said: “We’ve seen another exceptional year of competition in the WTCC, which is a superb environment to showcase the brand’s performance.” The ADVAN wet and dry racing tyres have drawn critical acclaim from the competitors, with the manufacturer developing products that suit both the front and rear wheel drive cars competing.

Kumho Mentioned in BBC Motorsport Coverage

Kumho reports that it enjoyed 4mins and 35secs of exposure during the BBC’s recent Korean Grand Prix coverage. Not in relation to F1, but through footage of the recent rally success of the show’s ebullient anchorman, Jake Humphrey, and long-standing Kumho-sponsored rally driver and Sky TV pundit, Tony Jardine.

The event, the Cambrian Rally, was Humphrey’s first ever rally and he took to the sport sufficiently quickly to guide the Ford-Fiesta-mounted pair to an impressive second in class. Running on Kumho rally tyres, their Fiesta was suitably adorned with Kumho stickers, while Kumho logos were clearly visible on the crew’s overalls. The team’s exploit’s also received a good airing in The Sun newspaper, which was another of their sponsors.

Westlake Gains ‘Daily’ Exposure

Stoke-based Daily Tyres, a new mainland venture from Eamon Daly of Daly Tyres (Limerick), used the recent Brityrex show to publicise the enhanced availibility of the Westlake in the Midlands and North of England. The Westlake brand was featured on Eamon Daly’s rally racing car which was prominently on display in the main entrance to the tyre show.
