Pirelli enters second year of WRC Academy support

Following an inaugural season it has called “highly successful”, Pirelli will continue to support the FIA World Rally Championship Academy as the 2012 season gets underway at Vodafone Rally de Portugal later this week (29 March – 1 April). Pirelli will again provide its K4 tyre on gravel and its RX5 and RE7 tyre on asphalt to 13 rising stars and their co-drivers. The season will feature three gravel events: Portugal, Greece and Finland, followed by three asphalt events: Germany, France and Spain. Representing 11 countries worldwide, competitors will pilot identical Pirelli-branded Ford Fiesta R2s, each prepared by Cumbria’s M-Sport operation from a facility in Krakow, Poland.

Vauxhall Ampera wins alternative Monte Carlo Rally

After winning the "Car of the Year 2012" award, the Vauxhall/Opel Ampera has now also won the 13th International Monte Carlo Rally for electric and alternative propulsion cars.

Four Amperas ranked among the top 10 vehicles. The French duo Bernard Darniche and Joseph Lambert managed to beat the entire competitive field. On Sunday, the final day of the contest, the revolutionary electric vehicle reached the finish line in the capital of the Côte d'Azur principality.

Lassa eco tyre to debut at Reifen 2012

Lassa reports it will showcase its entire range of European-market summer and winter passenger car, 4×4, light commercial vehicle and truck tyres at Reifen 2012; in the spotlight on the Lassa stand will be the Phenoma, Lassa’s latest summer high performance tyre. Developed by Brisa’s Research and Development Centre using the know-how gained from the experiences of the award winning Lassa Rally Team over the past decade, and available in European markets in 11 sizes ranging from 16 to 18 inches in diameter since May 2011, Lassa says the Phenoma is a popular choice in sport and prestige segment for upper class automobiles and tuning vehicles.

First BRC round marks “new beginning” – Pirelli

Pirelli Tyre’s UK motorsport manager believes that Dorset and Hampshire’s Rallye Sunseeker “marks a new beginning for the British Rally Championship”. While Ford announced that it would join the manufacturers’ championship, the tyre-maker was providing tyres to two-wheel drive vehicles – the only cars eligible for points in this year’s series for the first time since the 1990s. Ireland’s Mark Donnelly took the spoils at an enthralling curtain-raiser, set in the Wareham and Ringwood forest complex close to the rally base in Bournemouth, Dorset.

Pirelli-supported British Rally Championship to open in Dorset

2011’s Rally of the Year, Rallye Sunseeker in Dorset marks the opening round of the 2012 MSA British Rally Championship. The rally begins with a ceremonial start at Poole Quay at 18:00 on Friday 24 February, with the main action taking place on 25th, during which crews will tackle 12 stages over 66 miles in the Wareham and Ringwood Forest complex. Pirelli, the official tyre sponsor since 2007, will supply asphalt and gravel specification tyres to the Ford, Citroën, Renault and Skoda crews throughout the prestigious six-round championship.

New Discoverer S/T MAXX and A/T3 tyres boost KRT’s Cooper 4×4 options

Pirelli hosts Mini JCWs, fundraising F1 simulator at Autosport

Pirelli hosted a number of cars including the Mini JCW racing car to be used in the latest Pirelli-supplied series, the Mini Challenge, at the Autosport International Show. The company says the Birmingham NEC show is considered to be the motorsport season opener, giving participants and spectators the chance to come together and see a brief insight into the year ahead. In addition to the exhibition of cars, Pirelli used its association with Formula One to raise £725 for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

Toyo Tires reflects on “great” Dakar

While Toyo had hoped for honours at the Dakar Rally 2012, the Hummers it supported finished in creditable positions, with five stage victories and a further five podiums going to the Speed Energy / Toyo Tires Hummers. Robby Gordon and navigator Johnny Campbell finished the 2012 Dakar on a high note by winning the 29km timed special of Stage 14, the last in this year’s off-road marathon rally. Gordon finished fifth overall, with his vehicle being the only two-wheel drive vehicle finishing in the top ten.

BFGoodrich completes decade of Dakar wins

Stéphane Peterhansel in his ALL 4 Racing Mini completed victory in the Dakar rally, aided by American tyre brand, BFGoodrich, recording its twelfth Dakar win – its tenth in a row. The rally finished in Lima, Peru on Sunday, with Peterhansel taking his personal score on the event to 10 wins. BFGoodrich’s maiden Dakar success was in 1999, and the American tyre brand, which belongs to the Michelin group, hasn’t been beaten on the off-road rally since 2002.

Dmack launches two new WRC tyres at Monte Carlo

Dmack Tyres will introduce two new tyres for its second season in the FIA World Rally Championship at next week’s series opener, Rallye Monte Carlo, which returns to WRC after a few years away. The tyre brand says it will approach the 2012 season “with a sense of optimism and confidence” after Ott Tanak achieved a top-six performance on the series-closing Rally GB using its tyres; Dmack says 2011 was largely “a development year”, and has now developed two new asphalt tyres specifically to cope with the demands of a rally steeped in motorsport heritage.

Cooper wins herald expansion in endurance rallying

Cooper Tire Europe says it has expanded its involvement in endurance rallying, with its 4×4 products victorious in two high-profile events this month. In the Dakar, Spaniard Xavier Foj won the T2 production class in his Discoverer S/T MAXX-shod Toyota Land Cruiser 150. Meanwhile, ex-Formula 1 driver and endurance rally veteran, Jean-Louis Schlesser, won his fourth consecutive Africa Eco Race, using Cooper’s Discoverer STT tyre for the first time.

Despres helps Michelin to 29th Dakar motorcycle victory

Michelin’s bike tyres were fitted to the Dakar Rally motorcycle winner’s bike for the 29th time this weekend; rally winner, Cyril Despres’ KTM was equipped with the latest Michelin Desert Race tyres was the winner, while another Michelin-equipped KTM, ridden by Spaniard Marc Coma claimed second place, completing a one-two finish for Red Bull/KTM. Portugal’s Helder Rodrigues’s Yamaha, also equipped with Michelin Desert front tyres with the French manufacturer’s Bib-Mousse inserts, came third.

Pirelli BRC contract extended to 2014

Pirelli will provide tyres to the MSA British Rally Championship for the next two years. The premium manufacturer has supplied the control tyre to the series since 2007, and was previously contracted until the end of the 2012 season. Pirelli says the addition of two years has shown its ongoing commitment to national-level motorsport.

Vipal takes journalists and recyclers to Portugal track event

Borrachas Vipal recently brought together more than 60 journalists and recycling business representatives at a road test event held in Portugal. Members of the Asociación Nacional de Profesionales de los Pneumáticos (Anirp) [National Association of Tyre Professionals] as well as Portuguese journalists all took part. The aim of the event was to bring together media professionals to test cars and lorries that use recycled tyres.
