German pyrolysis technology specialist Pyrum Innovations AG and Greek firm Thermo Lysi SA have begun preliminary discussions about a new end-of-life tyre recycling plant in Greece. Pyrum has agreed to carry out all the planning necessary to obtain the building permits required under Greek law for the new facility, which will be located around 85 miles north of Athens.
Continental has begun using recovered carbon black (rCB) in the production of Super Elastic solid tyres at its Korbach plant in Germany. The recovered carbon black is supplied by Pyrum Innovations, a Continental partner company.

Pyrum Innovations is bringing its pyrolysis-based tyre recycling technology to the UK in partnership with SUEZ recycling and recovery UK Ltd. The two companies have entered into a one-year exclusivity agreement for a facility with three pyrolysis reactors that can process approximately 20,000 tonnes of end-of-life tyres annually. During the year SUEZ will determine the plant’s location and, with support from Pyrum, begin and finance the approval process.
In addition to recycling end-of-life tyres, Pyrum Innovations is utilising its technology for the recycling of carbon fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRP). After almost four years of development, the firm has commissioned an automated, semi-industrial CFRP recycling plant. The company points out that this is the ”first time CFRP has been holistically recycled worldwide.”
Mercedes-Benz will soon use waste tyres removed from its vehicles in the production of new cars. German pyrolysis recycling specialist Pyrum Innovations has taken the “next step” in its cooperation with the vehicle manufacturer and anticipates recycling several hundred tonnes of used tyres from the Mercedes-Benz Used Parts Centre every year. Pyrolysis oil made from these tyres will be used in the manufacture of vehicle components.
Pyrum Innovations will soon begin work on a new facility not far from its main plant in Germany. It reports that the town council in Homburg has unanimously approved the sale of a section of land to Pyrum for the purpose of setting up a new pyrolysis plant. German pyrolysis technology company Pyrum Innovations AG has signed a letter of intent with Norway’s Polyfuels Group AB to jointly build and operate up to four pyrolysis plants for the processing of end-of-life tyres (ELT). The joint venture plants will be based on Pyrum technology and will be realised by Circular Tires AS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Polyfuels. The partners intend to build pyrolysis plants for recycling waste tyres in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Estonia by 2030.

Discarded tyres will soon find a new home within the latest Mercedes-Benz models. Pyrum Innovations AG, which produces pyrolysis oil from end-of-life tyres (ELT), is supplying oil to its cooperation partner BASF SE, which in turn is combining the oil with biomethane as a raw material in the production of virgin plastics for vehicle components. Door handles will be the first products to have their fossil raw materials replaced by biomethane and pyrolysis oil from ELT. These will appear on Mercedes-Benz EQE and S-Class models later in 2022.
