M+S Marked Summer Tyres a Risk to Winter Driving, Warns Conti

Although the volume of cold weather tyres sold in the UK hints at a sun-kissed climate far out of kilter with reality, in other European countries the winter tyre market is big business and swapping over to winter rubber a seasonal duty for all motorists. For this reason, Continental has expressed dismay at the presence of numerous so-called winter tyres on the market; although these bear the much trusted M+S mark, the German manufacturer reports the tyres in question are “not or only slightly suitable for winter”. According to Conti, these M+S marked tyres are really all-season or summer tyres “produced cheaply in the Far East”, and therefore consumers should check carefully whether a tyre really is a winter tyre before making a purchase.

Translogik Buys Pneu-Logic IP and Trading Name

Translogik Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of RFID company Transense, has announced the purchase of intellectual property (IP) relating to Bluetooth enabled tyre inspection tools manufactured by Pneu-Logic and the trading name Pneu-Logic. Translogik paid an initial amount of £50,000 and additional payments will be made, subject to sales volumes, up to an undisclosed agreed maximum. This latest announcement follows the news (on 8 June 2009) that Translogik, Transense’s sales arm, was to distribute the Pneu-Logic made bluetooth tyre tools.

ATS Euromaster and Michelin Gain Council Contract

ATS Euromaster and Michelin have been jointly appointed by Redditch Borough Council as the supplier of tyres and associated services under a four year framework agreement. The contract covers the authority’s mixed fleet of 150 vehicles, which ranges from vans and agricultural equipment to refuse collection vehicles and road sweepers, as part of a pan-government tyre sourcing initiative established in 2007 via the Office of Government Commerce (OGC).

GPX International to Sell Solid Tyre Business

GPX International Tire Corporation CEO Craig Steinke has announced the company’s entry into a “definitive sale agreement for its Solid Tire business and Starbright manufacturing facility in China”. Steinke states “an investor group will partner with members of the management team to purchase the operations and underlying assets of the Solid Tire business.” The transaction will include the MITL, ITL and Brawler brands, as well as the Gorham, Maine; Red Lion, Pennsylvania; and Hebei, China manufacturing facilities.

Grouptyre Announces Federal Promotion Red Letter Winners

Grouptyre has announced the winners of its Red Letter Day promotion, a national initiative set up in conjunction with value brand Federal, for which it is the exclusive UK distributor. MacSams Launches UK Tyre Portal

Consumer choice for online tyre purchases has been broadened through the launch of a new website by Edinburgh based company MacSams. The macsamstyres.co.uk portal enables motorists to purchase new tyres online and have them fitted by a local garage, and MacSams Tyres says buying through its website offers savings of up to 45 per cent on the rates found at traditional fast fit centres. Indeed, the company expresses confidence it can offer “the cheapest online destination for tyres in the UK.”

Cooper Offers Cash Back on New Tyres

Cooper Tires has launched a ‘cashback’ promotion for the final two months of 2009, offering customers up to £50 when they buy two or four qualifying tyres. The offer applies to the Cooper Zeon 2XS and Cooper Zeon CS6 performance car tyres, as well as the new Cooper Zeon 4XS, Cooper Zeon XST and Cooper Zeon XST-A range of 4×4 tyres. Products in the Discoverer STT and Discoverer S/T 4×4 line-ups are also included.

October New Car Registration up 32%

October new car registration shot up 32 per cent in October to 168,942. According to figures released today the increase is the best gain so far in 2009. Private purchase shot up between September and October, prompting the SMMT to report that the latest numbers are the result of the fourth month of sustained growth coming from the Scrappage Incentive Scheme (SIS).

Looking at the figures broken down by brand, it is clear that Vauxhall and Ford remain outright market leaders. However, there is continued progress amongst the once smaller Korean brands. To put this into perspective, in October Hyundai (7179 registrations) out-sold Fiat (6570) and Kia (5633) sold more cars than Honda (4490).

UK Tyre Derived Rubber Materials Protocol Released

The final version of the Environmental Agency and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) quality protocol has been released after approval by the European Commission. The 'Quality Protocol for Tyre-derived Rubber Materials', made public on November 3, finally provides a separate classification for rubber materials manufactured from waste tyres; classification as a product as opposed to a waste, as was previously the case, removes such items from waste regulation.

Russian Nokian Workers Given Chance to Become ‘Village’ People

Nokian tyres has unveiled its brand new housing complex built for workers at its factory in Vsevolozhsk, Russia. Known as ‘Hakkapeliitta Village’, the 167 apartments are located some ten kilometres from the plant and cover a total area of 10,300 square metres. The company has invested more than ten million euros into the project in the aim of attracting and retaining qualified staff at the facility; a Nokian press release explains that in exchange for a commitment to remain at the plant for at least seven years, employees can purchase an apartment within the complex for substantially less than the average market price.

Motorist Group Helping Quebec Winter Tyre Buyers

(Tire Review) Quebec’s CAA wants to help motorists to make informed decisions on winter tyres as the season grows closer. The motorist group has developed an online reminder system for drivers, which includes winter tyre purchase pointers. “Being well informed is crucial,” said Sophie Gagnon, CAA-Quebec’s senior director of public and government relations. “This is a significant expense for drivers and a matter of safety. The reminder is designed so consumers can have a guide at their fingertips when they are making their choice. In fact, it covers the essential questions that have to be answered before the purchase.” The electronic version is available at CAA-Quebec, or in person at CAA-Quebec’s 12 service centres, 10 technical inspection centres, or nine outlets offering vehicle registration services. Quebec law requires vehicles to be equipped with winter tyres by 15 December.

North Eastern Tyre & Exhausts to Turnover £52 million in 2009

After achieving sales of £43 million in full-year 2008 results, North Eastern Tyre & Exhausts (NETE) is on track to achieve a £52 million turnover in 2009. A significant part of this growth can be put down the company’s purchase of 15 HiQ centres late last year in a move that saw the company’s retail footprint grow from eight to 23 depots overnight.

The NETE-owned HiQ stores are now benefiting from a two-year programme of investment, refurbishment and development, with a £2 million rebuild of the Leeds store. Local news reports said the Leeds HiQ store will now “set the new industry standard for Fast Fit centres with a state of the art workshop and customer waiting environment” when it opens its doors to the public on 1 December.

Free Fuel With Kwik-Fit And Michelin

Kwik-Fit and Michelin have teamed up this autumn to give away around 300,000 litres of fuel. Motorists who purchase four Michelin tyres at any Kwik-Fit centre before 28th November 2009 can claim a £40 fuel voucher redeemable at any Sainsbury’s filling stations. In addition to free petrol, motorists will also benefit from a 25 per cent discount on the price of four tyres.

Asian retail tyre portal Tyrepac has announced the soft launch of its China operations, in Guangzhou, China. The company reported on October 8 that consumers can now purchase tyres online via its www.tyrepac.com.cn website.
