Pirelli Reports ‘Surge’ in Post-Recession Truck Tyre Demand

With the economic recovery now seemingly underway and truck tyre sales in the UK growing again, demand for Pirelli truck products has reportedly outstripped this increase three-fold. According to the company, Pirelli’s success can be attributed to its focus on the premium market, the launch of two “extremely successful products” during the year and a number of new commercial fleet contracts. But how have these three elements linked together to put Pirelli’s sales so ahead of the market trend?

Independent Hails Labelling as “Bright New Future for the Tyre”

The Independent newspaper has hailed the forthcoming 2012 labelling legislation saying “drivers will soon be able to make a much more informed choice when buying tyres – and the product should be better too.”

Asking the question “how did you choose your last set of tyres?” the report, written by the Independent’s David Wilkins pragmatically suggests “the chances are that you simply asked for the cheapest option or told the garage to fit tyres of the same brand and type as those being replaced” and confesses “The truth is that most of us lack the knowledge to make informed choices about the subject.”

Conti Reports Top Billing in Autocar Rear Drive Test

Autocar magazine has performed its 2010 rear wheel drive tyre test, and Continental has good reason to spread the word about the test’s outcome. Continental Tyre Group UK reports that its ContiSportContact 3 has “proved its rear wheel drive capabilities” by taking top spot in the test, which was conducted using a Mercedes C280.

Stapleton’s Adds 22 Vans to its Delivery Fleet

Stapleton's recently added 22 new vans to add to its delivery fleet. In an investment worth over £600,000, Stapleton’s expanded the fleet with the addition of six Mercedes Benz Sprinter Panel Vans, seven Renault New Master Panel Vans and nine Isuzu 7.5 tonne trucks.

Stapleton’s are amongst the first in the UK to receive Renault’s New Master Panel Van. Liveried with the company’s corporate identity each of these vans will go straight into the company’s ever growing fleet, providing customers with a twice-a-day, same-day or next-day nationwide delivery service.

Stoke-on-Trent Tyre Firm Stung by Credit Card Fraudsters

Kevin Ecclestone’s For Tyres shop in Bucknall, Stoke-on-Trent has lost nearly £600 after Streamline – his credit card handler – reclaimed the money paid by people using cloned cards, reports The Sentinel. “They are all people who have seen us trading on the internet,” Ecclestone told the local paper. “They ring up and pay over the phone with a credit card before the tyres are picked up. When you say they can pay when they collect they make up an excuse, like they need to send someone else to get the tyres.”

Apollo to Invest in Dutch, SA Tyre Plants

Indian manufacturer Apollo Tyres has announced it is to invest 6.6 million euros in its Enschede, Netherlands manufacturing unit to increase the plant's capacity from 5.1 million to 6 million tyres per annum. The company’s South African concerns in Durban and Ladysmith will also receive investments totalling a reported $30 million for expansion and equipment upgrades.

Pirelli Reports Reports Strong 1H, Ups Targets

Pirelli Spa has reported that the firm closed the first half of 2010 with revenues of 2,426.5 million euros (1H 2009: 2,026.2 million euros), up 19.8 per cent. Pre-tax profits (EBIT) grew 62.8 per cent to 193.4 million euros (2009: 118.8 million euros). Net income of continuing operations more than doubled to 80.8 million euros, compared with 30.3 million euros in the first half of 2009. Such was the success of the tyre business in the first half, the company raised its revenue target. Executives now expect revenues to rise 15 per cent organically compared with the target of more than 10 per cent organic growth estimated in May. Pirelli also announced that it will present its new 2011-2013 three-year plan to the financial community in November.

Stapleton’s Confirms Pirelli CPK Purchase

Stapleton’s Tyre Services has confirmed that it has agreed terms with Pirelli Tyre UK to purchase its CPK Auto Products Ltd business. Asked what the strategic intention behind the firm’s latest acquisition is, Stapleton’s representatives said “Pirelli’s CPK strengthens Stapleton’s position as the UK’s number one tyre distributor” and said the move sees the tyre distribution specialist “expand its trade distribution operation enabling a further improvement in efficiencies and customer service” in an official statement. No details of the terms of the sale have been released.

Commenting on the acquisition, Stapleton’s chief executive, Kenji Murai, said: “We are a growing business and this latest acquisition allows us to further improve our market position. Our aim is to provide excellent value for money alongside great customer service, across all our B2B sectors. This philosophy will be at the heart of everything we do.”

‘Grizz’ Taylor Reports “Good” Q2 at Titan

The chairman and CEO of Titan International has described the second quarter as a “good quarter for a number of reasons. Maurice M. Taylor Jr, a man also known as “The Grizz” – a nickname presumably earned due to his business style rather than a fondness for bears – said “the numbers speak for themselves. If you look at the cash flow you will see that there is about an extra $1 million each quarter in depreciation and amortisation related to the new off-the-road equipment when compared to the same quarters in 2009.”

Pirelli Sells CPK Tyre Wholesale Business to Stapleton’s

Stapleton’s Tyre Service has agreed terms to buy Pirelli’s CPK tyre wholesale business for an undisclosed sum. A TUPE consultation process commenced with elected representatives of CPK on Monday 26 July. The sale is said to fall within Pirelli UK's strategy to focus on its core business, which does not include tyre retail or wholesale operations.

Halfords Reports Group Revenues Up 9.6%, Flat Autocentre Sales

Halfords has reported that its group revenues (the period from 3 April to 26 July 2010, incorporating first quarter financial performance for the 13 weeks to 2 July 2010) increased 9.6 per cent year-on-year, reflecting the acquisition of Nationwide Autocentres in February 2010. However, like-for-like revenues at Halfords’ Retail and Autocentres business units were down -2.1 per cent and flat respectively. As a result, the Group level, this represented a like-for-like revenue decline of –1.9 per cent.

Cefni Tyres Win Grouptyre, Continental World Cup Promotion

Cefni Tyres of Llangefni, Gwynedd was named the winner of the first prize in the football themed national promotion organised by Grouptyre and Continental during the early stages of the World Cup last month. The retailer received a Sony 46” full HD LCD TV and home cinema system in the promotion, which ran throughout May, and was presented with the prize by its local Grouptyre member Oak Tyres.

Titan Buys More Denman Machinery

Titan Tire Corporation, a subsidiary of Titan International, Inc bought a second lot of equipment from the bankrupt Denman tyre. According to information from the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District in Ohio, the judge signed the order approving the sale of the Denman Tire machinery and equipment, including other inventory items, for US$3 million. This pricetag appears to be twice the level of earlier reports linking Titan to a further Denman equipment purchase for $1.5 million.
