All Superior Industry Plants To Be ISO 14001

Superior Industries International is expanding its commitment to customers, employees and the environment by ensuring that its production facilities are all certified to ISO 14001 within the next six months. Already, plants at Pittsburg, Kansas, Arkansas, Chihuahua, Mexico and Tatabanya, Hungary are registered to ISO 14001, other plants at Arkansas, California and Tennessee should also gain certification within six months. Executive Vice President, Steven J. Borick said,” ISO 14001 certification underscores our commitment to quality and productivity, as well as to the quality of life of our employees and the communities in which we work.”

EU Approval of Grant To Continental

The European Union has approved grants given by the Portuguese government to Continental as an incentive to establish projects in Lousado, Portugal. The Swedish government had raised objections when Continental closed a production plant in Sweden (Gislaved) and transferred work to Portugal (Mabor). The EU reserves the right to re-examine the case if new evidence arises.

Tiger Wheels Grow

South African Tiger Wheels has benefited from a weak Rand pushing attributable earnings up by 63.3 per cent for the year to June. Revenue was up by 22 per cent and earnings by 49 per cent. According to the company the average euro-to-rand rate of R8.95 had most benefited the German-based division, ATS which became one of the main drivers for the growth in revenue. The company reported an improvement in production at its Babelegi plant in South Africa, increased production from the new Polish facility and the first phase of a new US wheel manufacturing facility at Auburn, Alabama was now under way. The US expansion has come about to meet the demand for wheel rims from DaimlerChrysler.

Last Roller Rolls Off Crewe Production Line

The last Rolls-Royce to be made at the factory in Crewe has rolled off the production line, marking the end of 56 years of manufacture of the luxury car at the plant. In future, Rolls-Royces will be made at BMW’s factory in West Sussex and the Crewe plant will be renamed Bentley Motors Ltd. next month. The final vehicle was a unique two-door Silver Storm convertible Corniche, worth an estimated 250,000 Pounds.

Suppliers Halt Daewoo Production

Three Daewoo factories have been idle for two days after Korea Delphi Automotive Systems shut off component supplies in a row over payment. KDAS is Daewoo’s largest parts supplier and is said to be owed US$ 109 million by the car manufacturer. 200 other suppliers are also said to be considering cutting off supplies.

Return To Algeria For Michelin

By forming a company – Michelin Algerie – Michelin has made the first move to re-open its factory in Algeria, which was closed in 1993. A Government-led privatisation programme has been aimed at attracting foreign investment and Michelin is said to be “waiting for some answers from Government” before deciding whether to re-start production. Should this happen, the factory will employ 500 people and manufacture truck tyres, 60 per cent of which will be exported.

Better Times For Bridgestone

Bridgestone Corporation appears to have come through the Firestone recall nightmare, with first half figures showing a net profit of nearly 24.5 billion Yen (218 million Euros), compared to a loss last year of 30.5 billion Yen. The company has increased its profits forecast by 5 billion Yen to a full year profits figure of 70 billion Yen and also announced that production would be increased at 12 plants over the next two years, boosting annual output by 8 million tyres. Bridgestone shares in Tokyo rose 6.4 per cent at the news, reaching 1,685 Yen.

PSA And BMW To Develop Engine

BMW and PSA (Peugeot-Citroen) are to jointly develop a new family of small petrol engines, with a target of one million units. The base for the project will be Munich and R&D will come from BMW, with PSA handling production and procurement. The total investment is said to be 750 million Euro.

Traders Forecast China “Will Be World’s Largest Rubber Consumer”

Commodities traders are predicting that China will soon outstrip the USA as the world’s biggest consumer of rubber, importing one million tonnes this year and producing 400,000 tonnes itself. Demand from the tyre industry accounts for 80 per cent of this figure, as car sales increase to an estimated one million this year – a 40 per cent increase over last year. Sumitomo Rubber has announced that it would begin radial tyre production next April in China for both home and export markets.

No Merger For Honda

Japanese car manufacturer Honda has revealed details of a three-year business plan, in which it rules out any chance of a merger with another manufacturer. Of Japan’s five biggest car manufacturers, only Honda and Toyota are independent. Honda also revealed that it will increase production outside Japan, including the building of a second factory in China.

First Homologation For MIRS Motorcycle Tyre

A motorcycle tyre produced by Pirelli’s MIRS system has received OE homologation from bike manufacturer Aprilia for its RSV 1000 model. MIRS production modules are due to be installed at the Metzeler factory in Breuberg, Germany, shortly.

Possible Closure For Goodyear Mould Factory

There is uncertainty over the future of Goodyear’s mould factory at Stow, in the Akron area. The plant has been operating at around 30 per cent capacity, producing mainly moulds for experimental and motorsports tyres. There are 117 hourly-paid workers at Stow, who have been notified that the plant is likely to close. Goodyear has upped mould production to lower wage-earning factories in order to cut costs. Talks between management and unions last week broke up without agreement.

Court Censures Cooper

A judge in a US court case has allowed sanctions against Cooper Tire. Two brothers are suing Cooper over the death of their parents in an accident, which they allege was caused by a tread separation. The defendants claim that Cooper destroyed documents relating to production records from 1992, but Cooper says it is uncertain whether the documents were relevant. The judge said that he would allow the plaintiffs to inform the jury of the destruction of the documents, and that they could draw whatever inference they wished. He also awarded attorney’s fees and expenses concerned with the destruction of the documents. Cooper said it would appeal the decision.

European Bank Takes Stake In Russian Tyre Venture

The European Bank For Reconstruction And Development will provide 20 million dollars in funds to Michelin Russian Tyre Manufacturing, giving it a 49 per cent shareholding in the plant at Davydovo. Production at the new facility is expected to reach 2.1 million units by 2005.

Bigger-Than-Expected Loss For Goodyear

Goodyear has reported a first quarter loss of $63.2 million; larger than many analysts expected. The biggest regional operating loss was $51.3 m, incurred by the North American Tyre operation. Europe was profitable with operating profits of $16.6 m (Q1 2001 $31.4m), as was Asia. Sam Gibara declared himself “disappointed” by the figures, but he expected the company to “make progress in the second quarter”. The loss was blamed on production cuts, currency levels and the return of stock worth $10 m when the Penske Automotive Center chain closed. Despite the figures, Goodyear’s shares rose 3.6 per cent on expectations of profitability in the second quarter.
