Performance Fibers to Build Second Plant in China

Performance Fibers will build a second polyester fibre and fabric plant in Kaiping, China, to meet demand from the country’s growing automotive market. The new plant will double the company’s dimensionally stable polyester capacity in China, where it is the industry leader. This is the company’s second expansion at the Kaiping facility in two years, having doubled capacity of the original plant with the addition of new production lines in early 2005.

Trelleborg Inaugurates Wuxi, China Plant

The Trelleborg Group has inaugurated its newly constructed Chinese plant Wuxi , part of expansive Shanghai region. The Wuxi plant, which has approximately 300 employees, will produce antivibration systems and other vehicle components. The plant replaces an earlier Trelleborg facility in Wuxi and represents a doubling of production capacity. According to a company statement, the new facility has a total area of nearly 20,000 square metres and has been designed according to strictest environmental considerations. Trelleborg Automotive has also recently opened a technical centre in Shanghai.

“This is another stage in strengthening our leading position in China,” says George Caplea, president of the Trelleborg Automotive business area. “We now have a best-in-class facility with enough capacity to meet growing demand, while we are also able to offer very favourable technical-development capacity, benefiting both domestic and international customers.”

Kumho Expects Early Completion

A report in the Korea Herald says that Kumho Tire Co expects to complete expansion at its tyre plant in Nanjing, China, in mid-April rather than at the end of 2005 as was previously thought. Originally the company had planned to quadruple production to 12.6 million units, the early conclusion of its plans could suggest that it has reduced this target. In addition, Kumho plans to break ground for a new $184 million tyre plant in Tianjin, China, its second in that city. Plans call for that plant to be on stream in 2007, Tire Review reports

Autopromotec 2005 is ‘Sold Out’

Exhibition space at Autopromotec 2005 is all sold out, with a number of company’s even joining a waiting list to take part in the show, exhibition organisers have reported. Furthermore, they are forecasting that attendance at Autopromotec 2005 will exceed the 2003 show, which counted 83,850 industry professionals from 103 countries.

Michelin Boosts Earthmover Tyre Production

Groupe Michelin has announced that it will increase earthmover tyre production capacity in both its Lexington, South Carolina, and Vitoria, Spain, plants. The capacity boost results from “unprecedented growth of the surface mining industry worldwide,” according to Michelin. The expansion plans complete production enhancements started by the manufacturer in 2003 and 2004.

CTNA/Union Representation Vote Results Certified

America’s National Labour Relations Board (NLRB) has certified the results of a union representation vote at Continental Tire North America’s (CTNA) Mount Vernon, Illinois, plant. Tire Review reported the news following claims by the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) union that the manufacturer interfered with the vote. The NLRB issued is decision, overruling the union’s claim on 23 February, but CTNA did not issue a statement about the results until 3 March.

SmarTire Supplies North American Coaches

SmarTire has signed an agreement with North American company, Motor Coach Industries International (MCI), for the supply of its bus tyre monitoring system.

MCI designs, manufactures and markets coaches and coach-related parts and services for the market, it currently produces approximately 1400 new coaches per year. The agreement covers both aftermarket installations on existing MCI coaches and original equipment installations on at least one of the company’s production lines this year.

Fire at Continental’s Mayfield Plant

A fire a Continental Tire’s Mayfield plant, caused minor injuries to two workers. According to the associated press, Fire investigators said that it appears the fire started inside the ductwork, but was under investigation. The fire started shortly before noon and caused minor burns to the arm of one worker and singed the hair of another, plant manager Hank Eisenga is reported as saying. The blaze, which started accidentally in a corner of a large room where rubber-related chemicals are mixed, was quickly extinguished by workers before Mayfield firefighters arrived, Mr Eisenga said. The plant manager added that the plant was expected to be back to normal within 24 hours. Continental ceased production at the Mayfield at the end of last year. The fire affected one of only two areas in which the factory is still operating – storage and mixing.

Recauchutagem Launches Fedima Sirocco

Portuguese company, Recauchutagem 31, has released a new range of 4×4 products. According to the company, the range includes products for road and off road usage, going some way to fulfilling its mission to have “the world’s most diversified production.”

The new range’s flagship product, the Fedima Sirocco, is for use in 4×4 competitions and is said to have high traction power with an “extremely aggressive pattern.” At the moment there are four sizes available: 750R16, 235/85R16, 35/10.5R16 and 900R16. In April and May the Fedima Sirocco range will be extended to include five new sizes: 215/80R15, 215/75R15, 265/70R15, 31/10.5R15 e 205R16. With its new product, the company is aiming to strengthen its position in a market, which it says has high growth potential, with the number of enthusiasts rising each day. According to Rechcauchutagem, its 4×4 tyres have brought success in some of the of the harshest all-terrain races across Europe, with several international victories.

Mahle Increases Share of Piston Manufacturer

Mahle International has increased its share in Izumi Piston Manufacturing Co, (Thailand) Ltd from 34 to 52 per cent. The company will now operate under Mahle Engine Components Thailand Ltd supplying the Thai automotive industry with 1.8 million pistons per year, predominantly for passenger car and commercial diesel engines. The 370 employees at the Bangkok location currently achieve sales of around 13.1 million euros. With 7 locations, Mahle now has a production capacity of 18 million pistons and is one of the largest suppliers in this sector on the most dynamic growth market. The announcement is retrospectively effective from 1 January.

Chinese Automotive Exports up 73 per cent

In 2004 the value of China’s automotive exports, principally of components, reached $8.156 billion (£4.4 billion). The total equates to an increase of 73 per cent over 2003. China’s automotive components imports rose 13 per cent in a year that saw vehicle production decline in the last months, according to the latest data from the Mechanical and Electrical Department of China’s Ministry of Commerce. China’s trade deficit in automotive products was reduced from the $9.737 billion of 2003 to $8.177 billion last year. Customs statistics showed that in 2004 automotive imports reached $16.333 billion, the Xinhua China Daily reported.

BorgWarner: Continued Growth Expected in 2005

BorgWarner Inc has reported 2004 earnings of $3.86 per share on sales of $3.5 billion (£1.9 million). In the fourth quarter of 2004 the company also recorded sales of $889 million (£477 million) up 11 per cent compared with the same time in 2003. BorgWarner reports that this equates to an operating income margin of 10 per cent.

Work Presents Two New Alloys

Work has presented two new three piece Rezax II alloy wheels. Offering a design with ten Y-spokes, the wheel features a forged rim spider and is optionally available with a forged RoundRim (18 to 20 inch) or flat-base rim. The wheels are available for almost all standard makes of vehicle. Special runs, without minimum production numbers, are also possible. The 21 inch and 22 inch sizes are designed for high wheel loads and, as such, are also suitable for SUVs.

Fire at ContiTech Facility

A fire at ContiTech’s Dannenberg facility is likely to cost millions of euros, the company reports. The recent blaze, which broke out on the morning of 29 January, completely destroyed one machinery hall and partially damaged another. The fire also spread to a warehouse and a laboratory.

Although the flames were strong enough to require 300 fire fighters, no casualties have been reported and local residents are not said to have been in any danger. The majority of production was also able to resume the same day.

The Dannenberg factory belongs to two divisions of ContiTech Antriebssysteme GmbH and Vibration Control GmbH. The plant produces a range of automotove products including drive and timing belts for industrial purposes.

US Tyre Shipments Increase by 2.5 per cent

US tyre shipments increased by 2.5 per cent in 2004, compared with 2004, according to preliminary estimates released by the RMA. The group cited strong increases in the nation’s GDP and Industrial Product Index (IPI) as being behind this growth. The positive general figure contrasts with a 2.8 per cent decline in passenger car OE sales, which fell to 53 million units. Light truck OE also decreased by 600,000 units, or 7.5 per cent, to approximately 7.4 million units in 2004.
