Trax – All in the Design

Leading balancing weight producer Trax, received much positive feedback about its lead-free weight design during the Essen show. This was at least partly due to the company’s excellent position in hall one, but was also because the 2006 exhibition was the first Reifen Show since the lead weight ban came into place last July. Since 2004 the company has ramped up production by some 15 per cent to 100 million units a year and anticipates signing an OE deal with at a large French car manufacturer soon.

Report says Kumho Workers on ‘Partial’ Strike

The Korea Herald has reported that union workers at Kumho Tire Co. plants in South Korea have been “on a partial strike” since last week. The union workers are seeking a 9 per cent wage increase among the 52 “terms” they are demanding from the tyremaker, said the report. The partial strike is apparently part of broader job action at a number of major South Korean manufacturers, including Hyundai Motor, Ssangyong Motor, a number of oil and construction companies, and other major employers.

SMC Automotive: New Production and Quality Management System

Together with leading Asian wheel manufacturer the Malaysian BSA group of companies, SMC Automotive has recently introduced a new production and quality management system.

A separate production unit consisting of melting, casting, heat treatment, machining and finishing has been established specially for the production of all SMC wheels. Only machines that are TÜV certified are being used. In order to avoid casting variations only primary aluminium is being used, while permanent quality checks ensure a constant casting quality.

Cooper to Halt Production at Texarkana Plant For Two Weeks

(Akron/Tire Review) Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.’s manufacturing facility in Texarkana, Arkansas, will shut down production for two weeks, according to a report in the Texarkana Gazette.

Indian Passenger Tyre Production up 20 per cent

The latest ATMA Indian tyre manufacturers’ monthly production figures show that passenger car tyre production in the emerging market rocketed 20 per cent. In April 1,243,559 tyres were produced as opposed to 1,037,296 in April 2005. The truck market remained flat at 977,510 units, up 0.2 per cent on last April. During the same period jeep tyre production fell 17 per cent from 115,032 units in April 2005 to 95,383 this year.

Van Aarsen, a leading turnkey project supplier has introduced “Next Generation” tyre recycling systems for the production of tyre derived value added rubber powders and granules. Van Aarsen became involved in Tyre Recycling during the early eighties when a former employee took the first steps in tyre recycling. When leaving the diversification strategy in the late eighties their roads split.

Hayes Lemmerz Produces Aluminium Truck Wheels in Bahrain

The world’s largest wheel manufacturer Hayes Lemmerz (producing a total of approximately 60 million units annually), has extended its product spectrum to include aluminium truck wheels. The wheels are called “CentruStyle“ and are manufactured by Aluwheel W.L.L in Manama (Bahrain) in the low pressure casting process. “CentruStyle“ will be marketed using the existing sales team into the original equipment business, to fleets and into the aftermarket. In order to make the wheels the producer will use equipment it acquired from the former Tunaverken (Sweden), which went bankrupt at the beginning of the year. Hayes Lemmerz and its Bahrain-based partner will begin with size 8.25×22.5 and want to increase the production volume gradually depending upon customer interest.

New Aluminium Casting Plant Inaugurated in Turkey

Together with joint venture partner Inci (40 per cent of the shares), in June Hayes Lemmerz inaugurated a new aluminium wheel casting plant in Manisa (in the Izmir region of Turkey). Production is based on the low-pressure process and operates at the same standard as at all the original equipment manufacturer’s other facilities. 400,000 wheels will be manufactured this year, with some 17-inch products being sold to Toyota. In the next year production will increase to approximately 1 million units with further expansion plans in the offing dependent on the order situation.

SJR Hankook Backs Wales Rally GB Launch

Welsh rally legend Gwyndaf Evans was on hand to help organisers launch the 2006 Wales Rally GB in style at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff this week. The Hankook-backed driver is playing a starring role in the British Rally Championship this year and is eagerly looking forward to Wales Rally GB – which is this year the finale for the British Rally Championship.

Nigerian Government Joins IRSG

The International Rubber Study Group has announced that the Government of Nigeria is now a member of the Group. “Rubber production [in Nigeria] has been established on a significant scale since the 1940s. Rubber area increased in the early stage, but due mainly to the higher oil price, the area has been declining recently. Despite declining, Nigeria may still have the largest area under rubber in Africa at an estimated 145,000 hectares and hence a high potential for the future. NR consumption is relatively small and stable at about 16,000 tonnes a year, while SR consumption is about 5,000 tonnes per year,” the IRSG reported in a membership statement.

Trayal Privatisation Tender Published

The Serbian Privatisation Agency has just published a tender for the sale of 76.9 per cent of the capital of the Trayal Corporation. Offers will only be considered from companies that have been involved in the production and/or sale of tyres for the past three years. In addition, such companies must have had an annual revenue last year of at least 50 million euros. Trayal manufactures around two million tyres a year, employs 3,500 workers and, last year, reported losses of 3.5 million euros.

Kara Gostar – Mould manufacturer

Kara Gostar Eng. Co. will be showing examples from its range of moulds for the tyre industry at this year’s Essen show. The company was established as a tyre mould manufacturer in 1991 and manufactures 400 sets of moulds per year. A team of experienced and skilled engineers, backed up by updated hardware and software, incorporate the most recent developments in tyre mould production into customer tyre moulds.

Chinese Tyre Production

Total Chinese tyre production will reach 3 billion units annually in the next five years, according to China Rubber Industry Association (CRIA) figures. Of these 70 per cent are expected to be radial tyres, with radialisation set to spread to the construction field. The huge production figures will also be predominantly made up of tubeless truck and bus and high-speed passenger car radials, according to the association. As far as machinery is concerned 11 out of the world’s top 12 tyre producers use Chinese-made rubber machinery in their production, according to CRIA chairman, Ju Hongzhen.

PTNA Going to 30 Inches With Scorpion Line

(Akron/Tire Review) During the recent New York Auto Show, Pirelli Tire North America (PTNA) announced it will begin full production of its Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico in size 315/30R30 – which it describes as the first production 30-inch tyre. PTNA will produce the tyres at its MIRS plant in Rome, Georgia. “The 30-inch Scorpion Zero is not about selling huge volumes; it’s more about satisfying a highly visible niche opportunity and making a statement in the market place,” said PTNA President Guy Mannino in announcing production plant. “Our past initiatives in this product area have driven huge interest in plus sizing on light trucks, to a point where 22-inch tyres can almost be considered the norm.”

Federal Reports Record Shipments

Federal Corporation shipped 1.7 million tyres in the first quarter of 2006 – the largest quarterly total in the company’s 52-year history. The figure reflects increased production at Federal’s Taiwanese and Chinese bases. In March alone the company delivered 670,000 tyres.
