Beissbarth Displays Prototype Aligner at Automechanika Show

Nestled amongst its current product line-up at the recent Automechanika show in Frankfurt, Germany, was a prototype of Beissbarth’s latest generation 3D wheel alignment. Called the Easy3D, the new system builds on the tried-and-tested Beissbarth reference system and therefore combines the benefits of an open 3D system with a familiar user-friendly user interface. In addition, the camera used in the company’s KDS.NG axle measurement system is also used here.

Michelin to Invest 30 million euros in Poland Production

Michelin Group is reportedly planning to invest roughly 30 million euros in expanding its production adjacent logistics operation in Poland. The expansion, which will take place in the Warmia-Mazury special economic zone, will reportedly see the company occupy a total of 177 hectares of the zone, according to the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PALiLZ). According to Michelin, a 20 per cent rise in automotive production in Eastern Europe during the first half of 2008 boosted growth in original equipment tyre demand.

Goodyear to Close Truck Production Temporarily

The commercial truck tyre production unit at Goodyear’s Topeka, Kansas plant will shut for a week on Monday 22 September. A spokesman reported that the reason for the closure is that the supply of raw materials had been affected by Hurricaine Ike. The plant will continue to manufacture OTR and military tyres, while Truck staff members have the option of using a weeks’ holiday allowance or taking a week of voluntary layoff.

Conti Cutting European truck tyre Production by 6.5%

Continental is reportedly cutting back production at its three European truck tyre factories by 6.5 per cent. A company statement stated that “the entire European replacement business recorded a drop of almost 10 per cent in the first eight months of this year, without any sign of improvement.” In response, says Conti, output will be cut to compensate for losses in its volume.

Indian Rubber Production Rises 18 Per Cent

Natural rubber production surged upwards by 18 per cent in India in August, claims the national Rubber Board. 72,000 tonnes of rubber were produced in the month, with India seeing helpful climatic conditions. The figure dwarfs the 60,850 tonnes produced in August 2007. There was also a rise in Indian consumption of said rubber, though the proportional rise was a mere 4 per cent at 78,000 tonnes (2007: 75,105 tonnes).

Senior Rubber Board officials told the media that the rise comes on the back of “an increase in the production and export of vehicle tyres.” During the period under review, the export of natural rubber shot up by 65 per cent to 2,341 tons against 1,416 tons, while import witnessed a slump of 150 per cent to 2,726 tons, compared with 6,839 tons in the same period last year.

Titan International no Longer Wants European Shares

Titan International Inc. discontinued discussions regarding a potential offer for Titan Europe Plc’s outstanding ordinary shares. On April 12, Titan International Inc. filed a preliminary proxy regarding a potential offer for an exchange of stock to be made with Titan Europe Plc for all or a partial amount of 51% or more of Titan Europe’s outstanding ordinary shares. On September 10, the Titan International board of directors notified Titan Europe Plc that they were discontinuing discussions on the potential offer for Titan Europe Plc.

Titan International Inc. continues to focus its efforts on production of its new 57- and 63-inch giant steel belted radial tires, the company said. (Tire Review/Akron)

Two Bridgestone Plants Cut Production Days

Tennessee’s two Bridgestone Firestone plants have announced that they are responding to slackening sales by cutting 51 production days between them. The LaVergne plant’s 1,200 employees will miss 23 days, while the 790 working in the Warren County facility will halt production for 28 days between now and EOY.

A company statement released yesterday said that the measures were intended to align production levels with industry demand in the US passenger, light truck and bus segments. Dan McDonald, Bridgestone’s spokesman, said that the truck tyre sector had in particular been suffering in light of recent economic conditions.

SRF Buys Thai Baroda Tyre Cord Business

SRF Limited, the Indian market leader in technical textiles has reportedly closed the acquisition of Thai Baroda Industries Limited in Rayong, Thailand. As a result of the purchase, made through one of SRF’s international subsidiaries, SRF Group has increased its output to 65000 tonnes per annum, “making it the second largest Nylon 6 tyre cord fabric manufacturer in the world,” according to local news sources.

Thai Baroda Industries Limited has an annual production capacity of approximately 12,000 tonnes of Dipped Nylon Tyre Cord Fabric with annual sales of around $50 million.

General Tyre Tanzania Plant at a ‘Crossroads’

International News

The fate of General Tyre Tazania is still hanging in the balance, having closed in April last year. Local newspapers are reports that the government is not likely to bail it out unless the last investor, Continental Tyres, accounts “for the $10 million it was advanced in 2002 to revive production.”

Kumho Plant Gets Additional Grant

The Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority recently learned about some unexpected grant money for the Kumho Tire manufacturing plant, which broke ground earlier this year in the Sofkee Industrial Park in south Bibb County. The Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce called the Middle Georgia Regional Development Center last week, saying if an application could be submitted within about 24 hours, an additional $217,161 could be available for the project. The application was filed and the award package is expected by the end of September. This grant will add to the $500,000 grant already received by Bibb County from the Employment Incentive Program of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs that goes toward the Kumho project.

Ceat Halts Production in Mumbai

Indian tyre manufacturer Ceat has declared to the Bombay Stock Exchange that it has stopped production at its factory in Bhandup, near Mumbai, for Thursday and Friday this week. A company statement said that the decision had been taken due to a pile up of stock at the factory, thanks to a slump in the tyre sales market.

Apollo Factory Lockout Over

The lockout at the Apollo Tyres facility in the Indian state of Kerala is reportedly over, with employees resuming work as of September 3. Troubles at the company’s Perambra cross-ply truck and bus tyre factory began on August 16 following a strike staged by workers two days earlier. Apollo, who experienced a daily production loss of Rs 50 million (£618,000) as a result of the lockout, had earlier requested local government intervention to resolve the standoff.

Wheel Producer BBS to Relocate Facility

Some time in the next few years – by 2011 at the latest, aluminium wheel producer BBS International will close its factory and headquarters in Schiltach, Germany (the “S” in the name BBS). In its place, corporate owner, Belgium’s Punch International will invest 25 million euros in the second BBS plant, in Herbolzheim, southwest Germany.

Toyota Decreases UK Plant Production

Toyota is set to cut production for five months at its Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, according to a report in The Times. Other major carmakers are said to be “monitoring the market.” Burnaston was the second-largest car producer in the UK last year (after the Nissan plant in Sunderland), producing 277,000 cars. The cuts will result in a reduction of output of 15,000 cars by the end of the year. The 3,800 permanent staff will reportedly stay and engage in training and plant maintenance. However, some of the 220 temporary workers will leave.
