Luccini Tyre Brand Introduced with 2 PCR Products

A new brand of passenger car tyres is set to be introduced to the market with an initial offering of two products in 35 sizes. Luccini Tyres are to be produced by a Far-Eastern manufacturer using European technology with 50 years experience in tyre production and design. Having spent the last year researching and developing, the team behind the brand is ready to launch the Buono Sport – a non-directional tread design for wet performance and noise reduction – and the Buono Drive – an asymmetric pattern designed for draining efficiency, ride comfort and durability.

Goodyear Hiring Staff as Luxembourg Production Increases

On Monday August 9 Goodyear officially ended the reduced working hours introduced at Goodyear’s tyre making facility in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg during the recession. Following an extended freeze on new recruitment the company is now seeking new employees, report local media sources. Approximately 170 workers will be taken on in the near future, and the production of truck, OTR and agricultural tyres has now returned to 70 per cent capacity; in 2008 this figure fell to 40 per cent. Management anticipates the plant will reach full capacity again in two to three years’ time.

Carlisle Plant Production Confirmed to End in 2010

In a press release, Carlisle Tire & Wheel has confirmed production will end at its namesake Carlisle facility before the end of 2010. News of the site’s impending closure was first announced in July 2009 and relocation of production to a plant in Jackson, Tennessee began last April. Following the factory’s closure Carlisle’s 24,000 square metre distribution facility will remain operating in the town.

Kumho Tires Enjoying 2nd Quarter in the Black

Following a less than optimal 2009 Kumho Tires has achieved positive results for the second consecutive quarter of this year. The South Korean manufacturer’s revenue increased 34 per cent year-on-year during the second quarter of 2010 to KRW 628.1 billion (£336.1 million), with operating profit reaching KRW 66.9 billion (£35.8 million) and an operating profit margin of 10.7 per cent. Net profit for the three months to June 30 was KRW 53.9 billion (£28.8 million), contrasting with a loss of KRW 113.2 billion a year earlier.

Birla Tyres Lockout Ends

Kesoram Industries Ltd has informed the Bombay Stock Exchange that the lockout at its Balasore factory in India’s Orissa state has been lifted. As of 6am on August 3 operations recommenced at the facility. A company spokesperson reported that almost 90 per cent of workers returned to work for the first shift. Tyre production will restart on August 4.

Alcoa and SAF-Holland Develop Flangeless Wheel

Alcoa and SAF-Holland have announced that they are working together to develop a new trailer wheel which can be mounted without a separate hub flange. The lightweight forged wheel weighs in at just 28.5 kilos and its size is 22.5 x 11.75. Maximum load per wheel comes in at 4500 kilos. The offset is 60 mm and the disc thickness is 35 mm.

Carlisle US Tyre Consolidation Plans ‘On Track’

Carlisle Companies Incorporated reported net sales from continuing operations of US$709.4 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2010, an 11 per cent increase from the second quarter of 2009. Income from continuing operations decreased 32 per cent to $38.9 million, or $0.62 per diluted share, and net income was $38.6 million, compared to net income of $55.5 million for the second quarter 2009.

Michelin Exclusive Tyre Supplier for Sukhoi Regional Jet

Russia’s Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company has signed a contract with Michelin for the exclusive supply of radial aircraft tyres for its latest major project, the Sukhoi Superjet 100 family of regional airliners. The deal was announced at Michelin’s stand during the Farnborough Airshow 2010.

Michelin’s Rickard Acknowledged for Service to Tyre Recovery Sector

Years of work in the field of tyre recovery and in the tyre industry as a whole has earned Michelin Tyre PLC managing director Jim Rickard a lifetime achievement award from the Tyre Recovery Association (TRA). Rickard is the first ever recipient of this award from the association, which he received at the recent TRA annual dinner in front of more than 100 distinguished guests from the tyre recovery industry.

Bridgestone Launches New Mining Tyre Monitoring System

Bridgestone Earthmover Tyres has announced a new tyre monitoring application to increase the longevity and safe operation of its tyres in underground mines. The UTM (Underground Tonne Kilometres per hour Monitor) is designed to allow underground mine operators – and the manufacturer itself – to analyse the key factors at play in the wear experienced in particular situations. It measures vehicle speed; distance travelled; the angles of ascent and descent; side loading movement; and the lateral, longitudinal and vertical forces exerted upon the tyres – a measurement achieved through the fitment of a three-dimensional accelerometer.

Natural Rubber Production Growth Slower than Expected

Data and estimates from the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANRPC) indicate global supply of natural rubber will grow this year at a slower rate that previously anticipated. Forecasts based on preliminary estimates and reports available up to mid-June point to a 5.2 per cent growth, lower than the 6.3 per cent rate anticipated in March and 6.1 per cent rate anticipated in May.

Hankook Inaugurates Global Education Facility

Hankook Tire has established a Global Education Center in Korea, a facility it says is intended to “collaborate and foster the company's production system.” Located within the tyre maker’s Daejeon plant, the new centre is intended to enhance the skills and abilities of staff working in production and other positions at factories in Korea, China, Hungary, as well as in plants Hankook intends to set up in the future. Through the Global Education Center, Hankook Tire expects to strengthen collaboration between members of its global production network, thereby ensuring production quality is of a unified standard.

Greatoo Molds to Hold First Customer Conference in China

Guangdong Greatoo Molds Inc is organising an international customer conference, which is set to run between 26 August and 2 September 2010. Senior technical consultant RNK Krishnan told Tyres & Accessories that the firm is inviting all its “vip customers from many countries for this event.” According to Krishnan, it is for the first time any mould company has organised such a event for its customers and the hopes is it will strengthen working relationships as Greatoo plans to focus on international customers all the more in future.

Cable Ties Noose on Car Industry Aid

UK coalition government business secretary Vince Cable has ruled out further publically financed direct support for the UK car industry. Additionally he cast doubt on plans made by the previous Labour government that would have subsidised early purchases of low-emission vehicles in 2011. Cable told London’s Financial Times on 29 June, “We don’t want to go around the country waving a cheque book.”

Stock Deals Shift Pirelli Ownership

Pirelli SpA’s ownership shifted over the weekend as the Malacalzu Group increased its stake in the tyre maker, reports Tire Review. The Genoa-based Malacalza Group boosted its stake in Pirelli by increasing its stake in Camfin – Pirleli’s largest shareholder – to 12.1 per cent, and plans to take a 30.9 per cent stake in GPI, which controls Camfin. With those moves, the Malacaza Group will effectively become Pirelli’s second largest shareholder. Pirelli Chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera revealed the stock plan in an interview published on 26 June.
