First blood to import tariffs?

No sooner had Shandong Deruibao Tire Co., Ltd. entered into apparent “restructuring” proceedings on 7 February then we at Tyres  & Accessories started hearing about it on the grapevine (see page 40 for full coverage of this story). Of course, companies face difficulties in any business from time to time, but this case has particular resonance with many because it is emblematic of what is going in China. There are two things the market is interested in – what’s behind the pressures Deruibao are facing and what the knock-on effects will be.

Uniwheels to increase alloy wheel capacity with 3rd Polish plant

German alloy wheel manufacturer Uniwheels has announced plans to expand its production operation in Poland by a further 2 million or so wheels. The original equipment supplier and manufacturer of the ATS, Rial, Alutec and Anzio aftermarket alloy rim brands produced over six million wheels at its two plants in Stalowa Wola last year; in addition to the aforementioned capacity boost, the erection of a third facility there will increase the site’s workforce with a further 250 jobs.

Statutory negotiations ended at Nokian Tyres

The statutory negotiations at Nokian Tyres’ Finnish factory concerning workers and staff in car tyre production, maintenance and quality departments ended on 9 October 2014. Adjustments to production capacity utilisation as well as cost savings will be achieved mainly with temporary lay-offs and transfers to new positions. In addition, a pension plan for two employees comes into effect.

Nokian to ‘adjust’ output at Finnish plant

Nokian Tyres intends to implement a series of measures at its passenger car tyre factory in Nokia, Finland to “adjust the production to meet the market situation.” It will begin statutory negotiations with this goal in mind on 25 September. Nokian says its negotiating aim is to adjust how production capacity is utilised and to create cost savings.

Multistrada investing to increase capacity

According to Pieter Tanuri, Indonesia’s PT Multistrada Arah Sarana aims to increase its domestic market share from 13 to 15 per cent in the next two or three years. The president director was quoted by The Jakarta Post as saying this two per cent rise would be achieved through increasing total production capacity to around 17 to 18 million tyres per annum over the next year. Currently, Multistrada produces ten million car tyres and six million motorcycle tyres.
