According to Titan International chairman and CEO Maurice Taylor, the US$100 million his company has invested in the area of giant mining tyres is about to pay off. During the course of this year Titan intends to increase the production of these tyres ten-fold, a measure anticipated to propel the company towards Taylor’s goal of tripling sales to $3 billion within a five-year period.
B.F.srl, the ISO 9001:2000 certified wheel balancing weight maker, is offering an increasingly wide range of balancing weights made from zinc, lead, steel and tin, which it exported to more than 50 countries throughout the world last year. Recent investments in technologically advanced plant and machinery, have resulted in the establishment of a new factory for plastic coating treatment and the introduction of adhesive weights in steel galvanized, plastic coated with epoxy powders of grey and black colour. The latter comes in response to the company’s “constant attention and curiosity” of what is new in the wheels field. However, according to company literature B.F.srl’s offers another key strength to – it offers “a quality product at a very competitive price.”
On March 30 Canadian firm Pneus Bélisle inaugurated its new CA$3.9 million (£2.2 million) retreading plant in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, near Quebec City. The facility is the second plant owned by Groupe Bélisle and the eighth in Canada to utilise Michelin Retread Technologies (MRT).
“We have complete confidence in the MRT technology, as we already have one retreading plant using this technology in Saint-Jérôme in the Laurentians,” said Daniel Bélisle, president of Rechapage Bélisle inc. and vice-president of Groupe Pneus Bélisle. “In addition to investing $3.9 million in the construction of the plant, equipment and staff training, we are also very proud to be contributing to the creation of specialised jobs in the Quebec City area.”

Exhibitors attending the seventh staging of TyrexpoAsia in Singapore have praised the exhibition for exceeding expectations in the global recession. Despite many tyre businesses cutting international travel budgets, the three-day show still managed to attract a total of 2,985 visitors, just five per cent fewer than for the last staging in March 2007. Exhibitor numbers were up eight per cent at 135, although total exhibition floor space remained the same as companies opted for more economic stand design.
“Every show organiser wants to increase visitor numbers show-on-show but in these tough times we are very pleased that so many still decided to travel. We view that performance as more than acceptable taking everything into account,” said Paul Farrant, managing director of show organiser ECI International.
Michelin, along with oil company Total and sports firm Adidas, is said to be under suspicion of evading taxes in France through the use of bank accounts based in the principality of Liechtenstein. According to the AFP news service, the Paris prosecutor’s office has confirmed reports that the French finance ministry had in late 2008 provided it with case files concerning foundations linked to the three companies, as well as some 30 French individuals. It said it will open a preliminary investigation into the three companies, the first step towards a possible indictment on tax evasion charges.
German machinery builder Collmann has designed and introduced a passenger car, and truck and bus tyre x-ray machine that the company says looks “quite different” from all existing x-Ray machinery. The new machine, known as the VerTiX, offers a similar layout and operation for passenger car tyre (13 to 24-inch) and for bus, light truck and truck tyre (15 to 27-inch) variants. The testing machine is built on a single base frame and is designed to fit inside a 20-foot container. Collmann says it can be set up for use at a site within a single day. The VerTiX unit can load, measure and unload a single tyre in less than twenty seconds, even in mixed operations. This equals a 20 per cent greater capacity than machines currently on the market.

And increasingly powerful motorcycles with superior performance abilities require tyres than can meet the growing demands placed upon them while remaining practical for every day rider. The company’s replacement to its Qualifier range – logically named the Qualifier II – is claimed to do just this.
Remog S.p.A, has widened the range of wheel balancing weights it offers, following the formation of a new plant for the plastic coated treatment of its products with epoxy powders. This plant supports Remog’s other site, which has been operating since 2000, and already has the capacity to cover at 100 per cent of the body of the weight. The new coating technology means the weights can now withstand certified 500 hours to salt fog test.
Bridgestone Corporation says it will this year, as a global partner of the Fédération International de L’Automobile (FIA), continue its support and promotion of the global ‘Make Cars Green’ campaign. This announcement follows the first event of the 2009 Formula One season, the Australian Grand Prix, at which Bridgestone says the Formula One drivers showed their unanimous support for the campaign.
The Make Cars Green campaign aims to reduce the effect of cars on the environment by informing drivers of how to drive in a more environmentally friendly way. In partnership with automobile associations in countries worldwide, Bridgestone Corporation and the Bridgestone Group are calling on drivers to observe the “10 points for greener motoring”.
Retreading machinery maker, Italmatic, recently celebrated a success in the development of PL 80 buffers for OTR tyres. The latest technological milestone means the company’s latest (standard model) machinery is now capable reliably buffing OTR tyres in of up to 51 inches.
According to the company, Matic PL 80 makes “perfect buffing profiles both for hot retreading and for cold retreading,” but is likely to be particularly useful for retreaders who rely on both methods. The machine can be equipped also with a building group and grooving group on request.
Yokohama Rubber has been manufactured and sold aircraft tyres, both new and retreaded, to the Japanese military and to Japanese domestic airlines since 1940, however the company has now decided to withdraw from this business. According to Yokohama, this decision was taken as aircraft tyre sales constitute only a minor part of Yokohama Rubber’s entire business, and do not offer strong future growth potential.
The focal point of Infinity’s 144 square metre stand at Autopromotec 2009 will be the brand’s two new products – the new INF 059 winter van tyre and the INF 200 on-road 4×4 tyre.
The INF 059 will be available from Autumn 2009 and will feature five products ranging in size from 14 to 16 inch diameters. According to company representatives, tt will complement the existing Infinity winter tyre range and will feature a distinctive asymmetric tread pattern and a “proven winter rubber compound.”
The Supervisory Board of Continental AG has unanimously elected Rolf Koerfer its new chairman at its March 27 extraordinary meeting in Hanover, Germany. The 51-year-old thus succeeds Dr. Hubertus von Grünberg, who resigned on March 6.
