New Kwik-Fit Corporate Account Mgr to Sit in Mastermind Hot Seat

Newly promoted Kwik-Fit Fleet corporate account manager and sports fanatic Luke Penn will appear in the final of BBC Television’s ‘Sport Mastermind’, which will be broadcast shortly. Penn, 39, was among the 36 people selected from thousands of applicants to contest nine heats. The six highest scoring heat winners then qualified for the final, with Luke qualifying in fourth place after successfully answering two minutes of rapid fire questions on the Grand National and then two minutes of sports general knowledge questions.

Smithers Appoints VP of Polymer Analysis

Smithers Scientific Services (SSS) Inc. has appointed Daniel J. Riley as vice president of polymer analysis, a newly created position. According to the company, Riley (37) will assume responsibility for all SSS Akron Laboratory businesses, including physical/mechanical testing, analytical testing, tyre service production and a new polymer consulting group. “Dan brings to Smithers significant experience in scientific management, product development and business acumen that will enhance our well-earned reputation of providing creative solutions for our global client base,” said Jay H. Lutz, SSS vice president and chief operating officer.

Iranian Tyre Workers Stage Further Protest Against Unpaid Wages

On the morning of August 13 more than 500 protesting employees from Iran’s Kiyan Tire blocked the highway between Tehran and Saveh, demanding to be given their unpaid salaries. The country’s State Security Forces used helicopters to suppress the demonstrations. The day’s activities were the latest in a string of wage-related incidents that began on April 12.

Dunlop Tops Tire Rack Test

In a new evaluation of summer performance tires by Tire Rack, the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec topped the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R, Yokohama Advan Neova AD07 and Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212 tires, Goodyear claimed. The tyres, in size 225/45R17, were tested on a 2008 BMW 335i coupe, according to Goodyear. Matt Neidert, Dunlop brand performance manager, said, “Tire Rack’s recent test results, combined with several SCCA Solo National Tour victories in 2008, validate the performance capabilities of the new ‘Star Spec’ tread compound, which helps initial dry grip during sanctioned amateur driving events.”

Amidst Rumors, Double Coin Chairman Ousted

Fan Xian has been replaced as chairman of Double Coin Holdings, one of China’s largest tyremakers and parent of China Manufacturers Alliance in the US. There have been a number of unconfirmed reports out of China that Fan had been “detained” and is under investigation by the government for unspecified reasons.

Liu Xunfeng was appointed to replace Fan, effective August 6, by the Shanghai Huayi Group, a government body that owns a 60 per cent share of Double Coin Holdings. Fan also served as vice president of Shanghai Huayi Group, and was replaced in that capacity, as well. Yue Chun Chen, general manager of Double Coin and president of its Shanghai radial truck tyre plant, will continue to manage the day-to-day affairs of the company and its global tire subsidiaries.

SITR Invests £4 million in Tyre Recycling

Cheshire-based IT recycling firm, has invested hefty £4 million on adding tyre recycling to its Middlewich plant. The company reports that it plans to open five other similar facilities throughout the UK and more in mainland Europe during the next two years. SITR is reportedly 90 per cent there in regards to installing new equipment for the plant, which has been brought in from Canada. As a result, the company announced that it will now also produce the Dunweedin range of rubber mulch, crumb and chippings at the Middlewich plant.

According to a letsrecycle.com report, Secure IT Recycling (SITR) was established in 2001 and focussed on secure document and IT equipment disposal until the beginning of this year when it began operating as a tyre recycler.

Pirelli Foundation to Study Eco-Tyres With Shandong University

The Silvio Tronchetti Provera Foundation and the University of Shandong in Jinan (China) have signed a research agreement that will see the two parties cooperate on research into “the new generation of ecological tyres.” University researchers will work together with Pirelli Group’s R&D department in China with a view to producing advanced low rolling resistance tyres. Pirelli Group has been involved low rolling resistance research for some culminating in the production of “eco-compatible” products such as the new “Cinturato”, presented in Europe at the beginning of 2008.

The Italian-Chinese agreement also includes two joint research initiatives, which aim respectively at realizing more consistent compound mixtures and the study of low-temperature tyre vulcanization.

Fifth Gear to Test Cooper Tyres

Cooper Tire’s acclaimed Zeon 2XS tyres will be put to the test on the small screen during the Fifth Gear programme that will air on 25 August. The ultra-high tyres will be featured on the Nissan R35 GTR of performance tuning company, GTC, as the car goes head to head with a Porsche 911 Turbo. GTC director Ben Linney’s GTR is the first example of the car to land on UK shores and, after tuning, pumps out 536bhp. The car was driven by Fifth Gear’s high-profile new ‘test driver’ during the head to head run at Welsh circuit, Anglesey, on 9 July.

The car, and the Cooper Zeon 2XS tyres, perfect for the GTR thanks to their superior cornering and handling characteristics, performed impeccably during the test, according to Linney. “The car was driven hard all day,” explained Linney. “The driver was doing power slides and drifts in the wet weather, just feet away from the cliffs. The 2XS tyres lasted all day, and with very little wear. As they say, they ‘don’t give up a thing’.”

Conti Tells Shareholders to Reject Schaeffler Offer

Continental AG’s supervisory and executive boards have recommended that shareholders decline Schaeffler KG’s 11.3 billion euro takeover offer. However, the executive board will continue to negotiate in the short-term, with the full backing of the supervisory board. “Specific progress” is said to have been made in the ongoing talks. The executive board said it will continue to evaluate “all options of action.”

Earlier Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported that the Schaeffler Group was ready to raise its offer to 75 euros a share. Could this be the “specific progress” Continental mentioned?

In response the Schaeffler Group welcomed Continental AG’s decision to continue the negotiations about an agreement without delay, adding that Schaeffler is very confident that the negotiations will lead to a positive result. “In the interest of both companies, we are also aiming to reach an agreement as rapidly as possible,” Dr. Juergen M. Geissinger, president and CEO of the Schaeffler Group said in a statement.

New Conti Steer Radial Out

Continental Tire North America has introduced the Continental HSL2 long haul steer axle radial. CTNA said the new tyre is “is the first in a series of the next generation fuel efficient tyres” the company plans. The tyre, said CTNA, was developed as an all-position/steer tyre for long haul applications. The new radial features Continental’s patented FlexLock technology, vertical siping, a long wear tread compound, and Visual Alignment Indicators on the shoulder ribs. The tyre is available in sizes 11R22.5, 11R24.5, 275/80R22.5 and 285/75R24.5. (Tire Review)

Recycler Fined for ‘Tyre Mountain’

Carlisle based recycler Envirotyre Limited has been issued a £20,000 fine for allowing the tyres stored at its premises grow to become what has been described as a ‘tyre mountain.’ The company pleaded guilty to nine offences related to the unlicensed storage and treatment of waste at its site. Commenting on the case, officials from the Environment Agency said that Envirotyre has displayed a blatant disregard for the regulatory controls put in place to protect the environment.

First Stop Branch in Pole Position at ‘Think You Can Drive’ Event

First Stop store, Steve Andrews Tyres was involved in the ‘Think You Can Drive’ event, held last weekend to raise awareness of safer driving on Cornish roads. Steve Andrews Tyres, part of Bridgestone’s First Stop network of tyre stores, teamed up with JBM maintenance to have a significant presence at the event at the Royal Cornwall Showground in Wadebridge. Together they hosted a large hospitality area which featured Bridgestone’s F1 simulator where young drivers could test their driving skills and pick up advice of road and tyre safety in return for a small charity donation.

Now in its second year, the successful event was organised by the Rotary Club of Truro and supported by Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, Cornwall Fire Service and Cornwall County Council to encourage safer driving on Cornish roads. Local police, fire and ambulance services, along with the team from Steve Andrews Tyres, were on hand demonstrating the importance of road safety to local drivers with accident and skid pan simulators. The event culminated with a landing visit by both the police and air ambulance helicopters.

RMA Projects 2008 US Tyre Shipments to Decrease 4%

Tyre shipments in the US are projected to decline by nearly 4 per cent this year compared to 2007, says the Rubber Manufacturers Association. Combined OE and replacement tyre shipment for the passenger/light commercial vehicle and truck segments are anticipated to decreased by more than 12 million units to approximately 298 million, reports the RMA. Such a decline, it believes, reflects anticipated worsening domestic economic pressures for both the consumer and commercial sectors.

Organisers Expecting More Visitors for CITExpo 2008

Show organisers are expecting more visitors than ever when nearly 300 exhibitors present their tyre products at the 6th CITExpo, held at the Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center on 17, 18 and 19 September 2008. Technology on show will include radial tyres, bias tyres, wheels/rims, tyre maintenance equipments, retread materials and equipments, tyre production material and equipment and other related products. According to CITExpo organisers, Reliable International Exhibition Services Co., Ltd., the two original exhibition halls have already been fully occupied by new and rebooking exhibitors, causing them to add Hall 1A to exhibition space.

Looking ahead, Reliable announced that the 7th CITExpo will be held in the same venue on 9, 10 and 11 September 2009. According to the organizer, they have already received more than 15 exhibitors’ bookings for the 2009 show. Those early bookings have committed a year in advance in order secure the best booth location for the future CITExpo show, the organisers explained.
