New Prime Minister most trusted to change a tyre

A national poll of 2,051 Britons has found that that newly-elected Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is the politician the public is most likely to trust when it comes to changing a tyre.

Nigel Farage, the Reform party figurehead and newly-elected MP for Clacton came second. Ed Davey, Rishi Sunak and Scottish First Minister and SNP leader John Swinney rounded out the top five. Liz Truss was reportedly least trusted in this and a series of related parallel surveys.

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) “enthusiastically welcomes” the recent announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office unveiling a comprehensive reform package aimed at strengthening small businesses across the UK. The IGA notes with satisfaction that concerns previously expressed to MP Robert Halfron, minister for Skills, Apprenticeships, and Higher Education, have been addressed in the recent announcement and commends the government’s commitment to fostering apprenticeships and reducing regulatory burdens, recognising the significant positive impact these measures will have on the automotive sector.

Rishi Sunak downplays EV delay by setting “path to zero emission vehicles by 2035”

Just a week after pushing back the deadline for transitioning to electric vehicles to 2035, the government has set out the percentage of new zero emission cars manufacturers will be required to produce each year up to 2030. The zero emission vehicle mandate requires 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain to be zero emission by 2030, increasing to 100% by 2035. The 2035 end of sale date puts the UK in line with other major global economies, including France, Germany, Sweden and Canada.

As we all now know, Boris Johnson became the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister on 24 July. The first thing he did was replace almost the entire cabinet, with a reshuffle of unprecedented proportions. Next, he gave his maiden speech on the steps of 10 Downing Street, with an address that sought to build a platform for economic and political optimism against the recent backdrop of Brexit stagnation. Not only will we leave the EU by 31 October, we are going to do it in style, he effectively said. In doing so, Boris – as he is affectionately known – revealed as much about the changing nature of the automotive manufacturing industry and its suppliers as he did about British politics.
