Over 100,000 Vehicles on Goodyear FleetOnlineSolutions Contracts

FleetOnlineSolutions, Goodyear’s internet-based truck and bus fleet tyre management system, has hit a significant milestone for the company. The system, which provides fleets with consistent high quality service and agreed pricing across Europe, now has more than 100,000 vehicles on contract – a ten-fold increase in just two years. The business has grown from just 10,000 vehicles in early 2005 to a sector now worth approaching 25 million euros, covering 23 countries and with 280 fleets on contract.

FleetOnlineSolutions integrates with Goodyear’s main computer systems. It works via the internet linking Goodyear, the customer and the service providers. Customers with FleetOnlineSolutions (FOS) contracts have all their vehicle data and contract details on the system. Goodyear TruckForce service providers, whether they are the fleets’ regular workshop or in another country providing roadside assistance, can access the FOS website. This provides information in their own language and enables them to carry out all necessary work, create invoices and update the system.

ProTyre Stocks Michelin Energy

ProTyre has announced that it will stock the new Michelin Energy tyre. “This tyre is special” comments ProTyre, “we are delighted to be offering motorists the next wave in revolutionary tyres at competitive prices.” According to Michelin, the new Energy has 25 per cent higher durability than any other tyre, a higher fuel efficiency that could save motorists up to £50 in fuel costs, and is environmentally friendly – reducing CO2 emissions by up to 150kg.

Bridgestone to Launch Ecopia EP100 Fuel-Efficiency Tyre

Bridgestone is set to compete in terms of fuel efficiency with the launch of its new Ecopia EP100 passenger car tyre. According to the company, the tyres will boast “outstanding braking performance in wet conditions in level with the B’Style Ex tyre as well as a 30 per cent reduction in rolling resistance.” The tyre will go on sale from 1 April 2008 in 195/55R16, 185/65R15 and 195/65R15. There are said to be plans to expand this range in a stepwise manner. Prices are all set at the manufacturer’s recommended retail price.

Cabot Announces Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year Operating Results

Carbon black producer Cabot Corporation has announced a net income of US$24 million ($0.36 per diluted common share) for its fourth quarter of 2007 period, including $5 million after-tax ($0.07 per diluted common share) of charges from certain items and discontinued operations, compared with net income of $27 million ($0.39 per diluted common share) for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2006, which included $16 million after-tax ($0.25 per diluted common share) of charges from certain items, discontinued operations and the cumulative effect of an accounting change.

For the full fiscal year 2007, the company announced a net income of $129 million ($1.90 per diluted common share), including $22 million after-tax ($0.32 per diluted common share) of charges from certain items and discontinued operations, compared wit the company’s full fiscal year 2006 net income of $88 million ($1.28 per diluted common share), which included $36 million after-tax ($0.54 per diluted common share) of charges from certain items, discontinued operations and the cumulative effect of accounting changes.

Vredestein to Raise Prices

(Akron/Tire Review) As of December 1, Vredestein Tyres North American said it will raise prices on all of its passenger and light truck/SUV tyres. The increase, said Vredestein, will be 5 per cent.

Apollo Results Show Growing Profits & EU Presence

The board of directors at Apollo Tyres made public details of the company’s unaudited second quarter and half-year results on October 26, figures that indicate strong profits. Combined India and South Africa net sales for the quarter between 1 July and 30 September were recorded as Rs 10,848.97 million (£134 million), slightly lower than the same period a year earlier (Rs 10,903.43 million). However, profits trebled: The Rs 182.18 million (£2.25 million) profit gained in second quarter 2006 swelled to Rs 576.09 million (£7.11 million) this year. Half year profits for the six months ended September 30 showed a similar trend, growing from Rs 298.69 million (£3.69 million) to Rs 1,122.5 million (£13.86 million).

Three New MAK Wheels to Hit UK Roads

The UK distributor for the Italian MAK range of replacement alloy wheels, Yokohama HPT Ltd, has announced three new models for the UK market. According to Yokohama HPT, the three new designs “capture the manufacturer’s flair for design” whilst epitomising MAK’s reputation for quality and longevity.

The first of the three wheels is the Volare, a design featuring 20 narrow spokes that spread from the mounting face right out to the edge of the wheel rim. A slight step at the rim is intended to increase the perception of size, and the combination of these two elements is said to lend the wheel a very contemporary, motorsport feel. The Volare comes in a range of sizes, beginning at 15-inch and running up to 9.5×19-inch, and is available in both four and five-stud patterns. Prices begin at £93.95 including VAT and the Volare features a mirror polished face with gunmetal body.

Pirelli to Raise Prices in Europe

The rising cost of raw materials and energy has prompted Pirelli Tyre to increase the price of their passenger car, SUV, van and industrial vehicle tyres by an average of 3.5 per cent. These revised prices will apply to all tyre brands produced by the Italian manufacturer and will commence on November 1 in Italy and Spain before implementation in other European markets by the beginning of next year.

Hand in hand with these measures is Pirelli’s decision to reduce by 25 per cent the suggested price list reference prices applied by dealers in Italy to final customers for summer car, SUV and van tyres, with winter tyres included under this arrangement from January 2008 onwards. The aim of this reduction, states Pirelli, is to “ensure a transparent price positioning to Italian customers and align the domestic market with the major European markets.”

Report: Chinese PC Market Accelerates With Government Backing

According to a new analysis from Frost & Sullivan the Chinese passenger car sales volumes have jumped from about 1.2 million in 2001 to over 5.17 million in 2006. Moreover, China has overtaken Japan to be the second largest automotive consumer in the world in 2006. Reduced tariffs are expected enable foreign companies to slash the prices of their cars and compete with the products of domestic OEMs. Meanwhile, new rules on the qualification evaluation of car dealership will ensure the elimination of car dealers without authentic authorisation, aiding fair competition in the market.

“Policies have also been drafted to improve the quality of car parts and components to guarantee the safety of passengers,” says Frost & Sullivan Industry Manager Cecilia Yuan. “The move to promote the consumption of low-cylinder volume cars will not only improve their effect on the environment, but also raise the prices of luxury cars.”

Goodyear Launches Licensed Product Kiosk at Retail Stores

Using its network of retail stores as a licensing proving ground, Goodyear Tire & Rubber has begun the installation of free-standing, licensed product kiosks at 65 Goodyear Auto Service Centers and 118 Just Tires locations across the United States. The Goodyear kiosk is a metal structure with flexible shelving to allow for multiple configurations depending on product mix. Initial installation is scheduled to take place between October 15 and the end of October and is, according to Goodyear’s manager of licensed products Bob Paciulan, part of a broader future retail distribution plan for its licensed products.

“The more than 60 licensees that currently produce products carrying the Goodyear name realise how valuable our retail network is for showcasing their products with the compelling Goodyear nameplate,” said Paciulan. “This is the first time that Goodyear licensed products are being offered at Goodyear retail locations and we hope that this direction encourages additional licensing agreements with companies that produce high-quality merchandise and want to tap into our consumer distribution capability.” The new kiosks will offer 22 distinctive products ranging from air compressors to floor mats and air pressure gauges, produced by licensees and carrying the Goodyear name. Product prices range from US$2 to $40.

Nokian – New Generation Winter Tyres Easy on Fuel

Much of Europe is currently getting ready for the seasonal change to cold weather tyres, and while many drivers assume that winter tyres increase a car’s fuel consumption, Nokian says that the truth may come as a positive surprise. The Finnish tyremaker claims that the latest generation of Nordic winter tyres roll fluently, save fuel and generate less harmful CO2 emissions than summer tyres.

Rolling resistance is measured in terms of a rolling resistance coefficient; the greater the coefficient, the heavier the tyre rolls. The average rolling resistance value for contemporary tyres varies between 1-1.2. Several test results indicate that the Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi, the studless winter tyre designed for northern conditions, has the most economic rolling properties in its category, with a recorded value below 0.9. This makes the tyre, according to Nokian, 36 per cent superior in terms of rolling resistance than its worst performing competitors (in 205/55 R16 size).

Apollo Turnover to Double in 3 Years – Kanwar

India’s tyre industry will most likely grow by 8 to 10 per cent over the next five years, claims Apollo Tyres’ chairman Onkar S Kanwar. He added that in the coming three years the tyremaker’s turnover will double to US$2 billion. “We are looking at inorganic growth and have acquired a facility in South Africa and are also in the process of starting a facility in Europe”, said Onkar. Specific details of Apollo’s current activities in Europe, however, were not provided.

Panic in Detroit: 2007 Auto Sales to be Down

(Akron/Tire Review) Industry analysts say that 2007 may end up being the worse ever year for new car sales. September sales, analysts say, are expected to show weak results, due in part of high gas prices, credit troubles and other economic factors, and the final quarter of the year indicates things won’t get better.

Jesse Toprak, chief economist for the auto information site Edmunds.com, predicts Honda Motor Co. will be the only automaker to report an increase in sales, helped by the arrival of the new 2008 Honda Accord. Automakers are scheduled to report September sales Tuesday.

“No one is immune to this general weakness we have in the marketplace,” Jesse Toprak, chief economist for the auto information site Edmunds.com, told the AP. Sales for September are expected to be down as much as 4 per cent vs. September 2006, with Honda expected to be the only automaker to show n increase.

Ford, GM and Chrysler are expected to be down month-over-month. One analyst forecasts an annualised selling rate of 15.9 million vehicles for the year, down from 2006’s 16.6 million vehicles.
