Fuel economy most important car consideration to Americans

With fuel prices at near-record levels, US consumers are driving less and contemplating a move to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, according to recent survey by Consumer Reports. Tire Review reports that the survey found that 37 per cent said their leading consideration when shopping for their next car will be fuel economy. A distant second was quality (17 per cent) followed by safety (16 per cent), value (14 per cent) and performance (6 per cent).

Scrap metal thieves target company vehicles

A national insurance broker is warning businesses to take precautions as the theft of catalytic converters from vehicles increases. According to latest figures the practice, which involves removing the converter from the exhaust pipe to sell onto scrap metal dealers, has doubled from 1,100 incidents to 2,300 over a five month period as the value of platinum, palladium and rhodium from which the converters are made increases.

"Replace fuel duty shortfall by general taxation" – Report

A new report commissioned by the RAC Foundation suggests that the Treasury will need to make up a shortfall in fuel duty caused by more efficient cars. The Association of British Drivers suggests that drivers are subsidising general taxation by far too much already and that redressing this imbalance should be the priority.

Bridgestone to quit electronic paper business

In order to place a greater focus upon its core businesses, Bridgestone has elected to withdraw from the electronic paper market. The company also indicates that increasing competition and rapidly declining prices in the liquid crystal panel business played a role in its decision. At present the exact timing for Bridgestone’s exit from the business has yet to be determined, however the Japanese manufacturer says it expects to conclude its production of electronic paper by the end of October 2012.

Financial analysts describe Pirelli results as ‘a big beat’

While financial analysts described the results as “a big beat”, on the day the news was announced Pirelli’s share price fell 10 per cent. Pirelli pre-tax profitability was said to have been better than consensus of analysts’ estimates, mostly due to better price/mix and cost control. Market watchers also welcomed the fact that margins are at record levels.

Bridgestone research reveals driver cut backs

A survey of British motorists found that almost two thirds of drivers are opting to leave their cars behind to travel by other means in order to save money, Bridgestone UK research has revealed. The research, commissioned by the tyre manufacturer, found that 65 per cent of people have stopped using their car so often in an effort to save money and 67 per cent are encouraging their families to walk more as part of a wider cost cutting exercise.

Rising costs depress used car prices

As motorists deal with the rising cost of petrol, new research from Auto Trader's latest Price Index, which tracks the average prices of used cars in the UK, shows that the average asking price of used cars from January to March 2012 actually fell 3.9 per cent year-on-year to £8,891.

Great Wall the first Chinese marque on sale in UK

Great Wall Motor Company reports that it has become the first Chinese marque to get its cars on sale in UK. The first from the firm to land on these shores is the Steed pick-up on sale now, priced from £13,998 (CVOTR) and it comes with 16-inch alloy wheels as standard. Earlier this year another Chinese OEM, Geely, announced its plans to market vehicles in the UK.

Online tyre retail still a growing market, says Delticom report

Over in Germany, online tyre retailer Delticom commissioned research company Forsa to study consumer attitudes to buying tyres online. Forsa surveyed 1,000 German potential tyre purchasers, aged 18 to 65 years, and noted that acceptance towards online tyre purchases is still growing.

A multiplicity of names: alloy wheels lack brand image

It’s now been about four decades since alloy wheels began winning ground from steel passenger car wheels, and these products really came into their own in the 80s and 90s. Alloy wheels were seen as ‘the best thing since sliced bread’ and sold accordingly. This trend, which started off in the replacement sector, progressed into original equipment; initially only prestige and sport models were equipped with alloys, yet within a few years their use spread to small cars and some entry-level models. The alloy wheel industry boomed and made good money – until a number of thresholds were crossed: Suppliers found themselves with more products than demand justified; fierce competition drove prices down until aftermarket rims were cheaper than their original equipment equivalents.
