TWG Chair: Tyre Wholesalers Again Show Recession Resilience

As a man of 40 experience in the tyre trade – and with it the knowledge of three recessions – Tyre Wholesalers Group chair Ashley Croft is in a good position to comment on the effects of the current financial crisis (which, depending on whose opinion you are heeding, may or may not have come to an end). In his speech at the 2009 TWG Annual Lunch, Croft described the past year as a “harsh period”, but made clear that the recession had hit hardest in the tyre business where manufacturers were most committed to supplying original equipment. However, he stated, “replacement market traders have once again proved themselves to be relatively recession-proof”.

Al Saeedi Named Maitech Best Dealer

Al Saeedi Middle East FZ Co. was recently named as Maitech Tyres’s Best Dealer 2008. The award was presented Ian Thomas, Maitech director international sales in a ceremony held at the Intermat show in Paris.

The Maitech range includes all-steel off road radials with sizes to suit many different types of construction equipment. The Maitech range of steel radial UM3/UM5 tyres covers 15.5R25, 17.5R25, 20.5R25, 23.5R25, 26.5R25 and 29.5R25. In particular Maitech tyres are said to be highly resistant to shoulder and tread cuts and hence enjoy a greatly extended life for maximum cost effectiveness. This extended life, combined with the Maitech’s ability to wear evenly, results in lower costs per kilometre and therefore reduced overall machine operating costs.

Private Brand Developments at Viking International

Grouptyre Launches New Website

Grouptyre has launched a new website, which is designed to reflect its new corporate identity. “While it’s important to ensure our website promotes the new-look Grouptyre, we have also taken the opportunity to develop certain aspects of the site to provide greater functionality and are now confident it will prove a useful resource for all our customer groups,” said director of commercial operations Karl Naylor.

The website has now added profiles of all Grouptyre’s suppliers – including all the premium brands, a wide range of budget brands and some carefully selected exclusive brands – plus links to the manufacturers’ own websites. There is also information on, and a link to, the Grouptyre ‘virtual warehouse’ Grouplink, which gives independent tyre retailers and garages desktop access to a wealth of product and stockholding information.

Maxxis Launches All-season UHP Tyre

Maxxis is continuing to expand its position in the high performance sector, with a range of tyres in some 200 sizes. The latest offering comes in the shape of a low aspect ratio unidirectional ultra-high performance. Available in sizes from 195/50 R15 to 255/35 ZR20, the new Maxxis MA-Z4S Victra features a reinforced casing and robust body ply structure for improved handling and stability, while a hard bead filler compound is said to aid cornering.

Reports: EU Legislation Will Kill Budget Tyres

New EU regulations could lead to “type approval” of tyre specifications on CO2 emissions, effectively pushing out economy options that perform lower than the premium brands in this respect. According to an Auto Express, new EU rules aimed at cutting CO2 emissions could mean that drivers are forced to spend hundreds of pounds more to get the most fuel efficient tyres, increasing the so-called OE pull-through effect and therefore premium brand sales. Auto Express states that if the proposals go ahead, drivers who have purchased new or used cars that come with CO2 reducing low-energy rubber tyres would need to replace these with the same type or face failing their MOT.

Deldo Completes Warehouse Expansion

This summer Belgian wholesaler Deldo completed an 8000 square expansion of its Antwerp central warehouse. As a result of the building work the companies warehouse now covers approximately 60,000 square metres and has a stock capacity of more than 2 million tyres. According to the company the move further underlines the company’s vision of having “everything under one roof.” Deldo offers a complete range in premium brands as well as a mix of exclusive brands, with 50,000 tyres being “handled” at the warehouse each day. Deldo representatives told Tyres & Accessories that the recent enlargement will result in improved internal logistics and greater efficiency. The company also expects the move to further its position as a winter tyre specialist, explaining that “winter tyre require a comprehensive stock.”

Kwik-Fit Fleet Wins Pendragon Deal

Kwik-Fit Fleet has won a two-year sole supply contract with Pendragon Group to supply fast-fit and tyre management services to the three contract hire and fleet management companies within the organisation. The new deal, which Kwik-Fit Fleet won after fighting off competition in a competitive tender, means Britain’s largest independent fast-fit company will supply services to the 25,178 vehicles operated by Pendragon Contracts, Bramall Contracts and Vardy Contract Motoring.

Millennium Performs Whatever the Weather

Millennium UHP tyres have been “a great success since” their launch at the beginning of the year, according to exclusive distributors Viking International. “Designed to compete with high performance premium brands in terms of performance, but priced at a level to provide excellent profit opportunities for our customers, it’s not difficult to see why Millennium has been so popular,” Viking representatives told Tyres & Accessories.

Deldo ‘Optimistic’ About Coming Winter Season

Having recently released its latest winter catalogue, Belgium-based wholesaler, Deldo, is claiming that it is a leading player in the tyre market. “Our winter catalogue is once again the benchmark,” with strong prices on a broad range of premium brands, said a company spokesperson. Copies of the new catalogue have already been shipped to Germany and Austria with other countries set to follow shortly.

According to company spokesman, Tom Van Dyck, Deldo can “clearly feel the trend of the current markets – many have realised that ordering with the industry is no guarantee for success.” Each year too many important sizes fail to arrive, he observed adding: “Furthermore, traders can find any brand within our stock. It is no longer necessary to maintain expensive business relationships and buy large minimum quantities, just to get the goods you need. With only one contact, you can get your hands on any brand you want.”

More Contracts for Kwik-Fit Fleet

Kwik-Fit Fleet picked up a couple of new contracts recently.

The first of these is a three-year deal with HSBC Vehicle Finance, under which Kwik-Fit Fleet is named as preferred supplier of fast-fit services to its fleet of 90,000 vehicles.

Mike Wise, Kwik-Fit Fleet sales director, said: “More and more contract hire and leasing companies are looking to consolidate their purchasing power to keep costs down and cement service standards for drivers.” Peter Hollinshead, head of HSBC Vehicle Finance, agreed, saying: “We task ourselves with maximising our purchasing power, improving service levels and making efficiency savings, which we can pass on to our customers. This agreement with Kwik-Fit Fleet will help us achieve these objectives.”
