Dunlop has shortlisted 10 inspiring stories in a new campaign to showcase some of the Great Fightback stories from motorsport history. New research published by Direct Line for Business, reveals the A-team’s classic GMC Vandura is the nation’s favourite van. Despite the cult TV show ending in 1987 the A-team van has become an enduring pop culture icon capturing 43 percent of the vote. Thousands of Britons voted the iconic black and metallic grey vehicle with is characteristic red stripe, driven by Sergeant Bosco Albert “B.A” Baracus played by Mr T, in the show as their favourite.
According to recent information released by the Independent Garage Association (IGA), cash-strapped motorists will be delighted to hear that visiting an independent garage could cost them on average £40 an hour less than if they visited a franchise dealer.
The IGA polled over 2000 of its members on their labour rates and has concluded, that independent garages 'continue to offer motorists the very best value for money.' Enabling all UK motorists to find a 'trusted' local independent garage was one of the key reasons why the IGA launched its UK-wide Trust My Garage scheme.
Ninety-one per cent of motorists do not trust the government to reinvest money made from tolls on new roads, according to a survey of more than 2,500 motorists, conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
Sixty per cent of motorists do not support toll roads, and seventy-nine per cent of motorists would not support the introduction of tolls on existing roads.
A survey from the AA has found that 30 per cent of motorists have experienced damage to their vehicles due to poor road surfaces. With a third of AA members reporting to have suffered damage to their cars as a result of pothole damage, Matthew Mycock, Autoglass managing director, has commented saying: "Cuts in the road maintenance programme will inevitably mean potholes go unfilled and cracks are left unprepared."
A new poll conducted by Continental Tyres Jeremy Clarkson has topped a poll of the Brits motorist would least like to share a driving adventure with. The controversial motoring journalist and TV presenter was rated as the worst person to share a 4×4 drive across the Sahara Desert. Hot on Clarkson’s heels was Katie Price. Prime Minister David Cameron came a close third.
The tyre trade has suggested that, while there is still plenty of scepticism over the commercial draw of fuel efficient tyres, consumers will pay more for a tyre that increases fuel efficiency. Motorists who dawdle at traffic lights annoy more people than bullying bus drivers, middle-lane motorway hoggers and caravans, a HiQ survey of 500 motorists has suggested. The fast fit network asked drivers what most frustrates them about life on Britain’s roads. Somewhat surprisingly, twee car stickers – including the slogans “sprinkled by fairy dust” and “cheeky monkey on board” – came third in HiQ’s Driver Frustration survey.
For the third year in a row Continental has been voted the best tyre brand in a reader poll held by German based car enthusiast magazine Auto Zeitung. Last autumn more than 20,000 of the magazine’s readers voted upon a number of categories, including tyres, with the results published in the latest (4/2010) issue of the magazine.
Its seems virtually no-one likes the idea of having continuing with a control tyre in Formula One. “If your car breaks down and an official motorcade drives by, who would you hope had come to your rescue?” That was the somewhat implausible question posed by The Institute of the Motor Industry in a recent survey of 2000 consumers concerning the Automotive Technician Accreditation scheme; but not to be outdone, the Great British Public got behind its monarch, delivering an equally implausible scenario in which the Queen took a look under their hoods. Perhaps drawing on her experience as a fully-qualified World War Two mechanic, HRH Elizabeth II (16 per cent) was considered most likely to undertake basic car repairs, followed by Conservative Party leader David “Dave” Cameron (13 per cent). Predictably, Gordon Brown gained 9 per cent of the vote (a sorry prediction for 2010’s General Election, if fought on the rather unlikely issue of car reparation) while eminently disposable pop culture guru Simon Cowell got 11 per cent.

According to a recent poll of 1,000 commercial van driving customers, Swinton Insurance has revealed that 25 per cent of the segment never checked the condition or tread of their tyres, while 42 per cent did not know the correct legal tread depth.
