Body of Tuner Gemballa Discovered

An eight-month mystery has come to a grisly close, yet the discovery of Uwe Gemballa’s body in South Africa opens the door to a number of fresh questions. The 51-year old owner of the German company Gemballa, best known for its Porsche tuning parts, disappeared shortly after arriving in South Africa in February. Late that month media reports indicated Gemballa had telephoned his wife, instructing her to transfer a million euros into his bank account. It was suggested he had been involved in an accident of some sort.

Stoke-on-Trent Tyre Firm Stung by Credit Card Fraudsters

Kevin Ecclestone’s For Tyres shop in Bucknall, Stoke-on-Trent has lost nearly £600 after Streamline – his credit card handler – reclaimed the money paid by people using cloned cards, reports The Sentinel. “They are all people who have seen us trading on the internet,” Ecclestone told the local paper. “They ring up and pay over the phone with a credit card before the tyres are picked up. When you say they can pay when they collect they make up an excuse, like they need to send someone else to get the tyres.”

Pair Arrested in Tire Theft Sting at Pirelli Plant

Two men were arrested for stealing some $100,000 of tyres from the Pirelli Tire North America plant in Rome, Georgia, reports Tire Review. The pair were charged after a county police sting operation caught them taking some 150 tyres out of trucks at the plant site and attempted to sell them to officers.

Police Bikes to Ride on Dunlop

Following an evaluation by the Thames Valley Police Driving School, Chiltern Transport Consortium has selected Dunlop to be tyre supply for its fleet of BMW R1200 RTP fully homologated, police specification bikes. The BMWs will run on the Sportmax Roadsmart, a tyre predominantly aimed at the sports touring bike sector.

700 Michelin Tyres Stolen

Over 700 Michelin and Kleber car tyres were stolen from a truck in a lay-by on the A1 in Rutland on 5 May. The tyres were en-route from Michelin’s Dundee factory to a distribution centre in mainland Europe when, Michelin reports, they were stolen by thieves who slashed the curtain-sides of the trailer while the driver was asleep. The sizes of tyres stolen were as follows (quantity in brackets):

Trucks Seized in UAE Tyre Safety Programme

During a two-week long tyre safety campaign held in the United Arab Emirates, police stopped and confiscated 1,099 trucks running on unsafe tyres. Tyre related faults are reported to be one of the main causes of accidents in the UAE, a problem compounded by the preference of many truck drivers for cheap but inferior quality tyres.

Prison Sentence for Tyre Fraudster

An employee at a County Durham fast fit outlet who stole tyres from his workplace over a four-and-a-half year period has been imprisoned four 15 months. Christopher Edward Watson, who worked at Tyre Spot in Darlington, entered non-existent transactions into the company’s computer system in order to make it appear that tyres were being transferred from Darlington to other Tyre Spot depots. Watson then sold these tyres, which had a total retail value of almost £120,000, to friends and other willing buyers.

Drug Sting Brings Arrests, Warrants at Goodyear Plant

Tire Review reports that nine employees at Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s Fayetteville, North Carolina tyre factory were arrested in a drug raid at the plant on March 30. The raid revealed illegal drugs in the employees’ vehicles and in the plant, police said, including marijuana, cocaine, prescription drugs and Ecstacy. Police said the arrests – and arrest warrants for five more men – came after a lengthy undercover operation at the plant with narcotics agents posing as Goodyear employees.

Investigation Into Disappearance of Porsche-Tuner Gemballa Continues

The internet has become a rich source of speculation over the disappearance of Uwe Gemballa. The founder of the Porsche tuning company Gemballa disappeared after arriving in the South African city of Johannesburg more than two weeks ago. According to German police reports, Gemballa telephoned his wife in Germany shortly after arriving on February 8, informing her to transfer a million euros to a particular bank account. Police say the 51-year old stated he’d had an accident and needed a large sum of money. Since then he has not been able to be contacted.

Flak Aimed at Pirelli Sponsored Young Driver Initiative

Man Dies at Apaseal Site in Sussex

A 54-year old man working at Apaseal in Hailsham, Sussex has died as a result of an “industrial accident”. Local newspaper the Sussex Express has reported that police arrived at the site to find the man dead at the scene, having been at work transporting heavy equipment. According to the report, police will work with the Health and Safety executive to work out what happened, with the man’s identification expected to happen before the end of the week.

Tyre Thieves Target West Midlands Businesses

The Express & Star reports that a tyre centre in the West Midlands town of Tipton has become the latest to be targeted by tyre thieves in the regions. On the evening of January 6 the criminals smash through a wall at Addison Tyre Centre and destroyed the building’s alarm system before seeking out premium tyres. While they only escaped with two tyres before the police arrived on the scene, business owner Jason Addison had found the expense of guarding against such break-ins so expensive that he’s posted a £1000 reward for any help that leads to the culprit’s conviction.

Federal Tires Goes to Hollywood…Almost

Federal Tires are now on display at Warner Bros. Movie World Australia after the Taiwan-based tyremaker entered a year long sponsorship deal with the park’s Hollywood Stunt Driver attraction. According to the company, the partnership has “opened up a whole new chapter for Federal Tires taking a more stellar role to please automotive enthusiasts when it comes to vehicular theatrics.”

Michigan County to Brand Tyres, Add Security to Stem Thefts

In an effort to thwart ongoing tyre thefts, the Genesee County (Michigan) Road Commission has resorted to branding every tyre it buys for its vehicle fleet, reports Tire Review. The branding effort is apparently part of strategy officials say are being made to prevent future thefts of tyres and other equipment, according to the Flint Journal. Last week Road Commission chairman David Miller and vice chairman James Pomeroy told the county Board of Commissioners about seven policy changes, including the serial number branding plan, but have still yet to discuss the scope of internal thefts at the road agency or how the thefts occurred. In late October, the Road Commission suspended one employee without pay and turned an internal investigation of tyre thefts over to the Michigan State Police.
