Following reports of a death at Pirelli’s Carlisle passenger car and 4×4 tyre production facility, the manufacturer has issued a statement confirming that a worker had been found dead in the factory. It also communicated how the company is “deeply saddened” to announce the news of the fatality and confirms that work at the factory has been suspended to “facilitate the investigation.”
National and regional media report that Cumbria Police are investigating a death at Pirelli’s Carlisle factory. An ambulance crew was first dispatched to the plant to treat a man in his 40s on the afternoon of 30 September, however he was pronounced dead at the scene and police were requested. Specific information regarding the death have not been made public, however the police say it is being treated as suspicious. Pirelli management have temporarily closed the factory.
Goodyear Dunlop has won four new lots in the Government Procurement Service RM955 supply and fit of tyres framework agreement. The first of these lots is for the sole supply and fitment of Goodyear and Dunlop tyres to UK Police Forces, while the others deal with wider public sector interests. The contracts will cover cars, trucks and motorcycles.

Careless drivers will be targeted under new proposals announced for consultation by Road Safety Minister Mike Penning. The proposals would make fixed penalty notices available for careless driving, giving the police greater flexibility in dealing with less serious careless driving offences and freeing them from resource intensive enforcement processes. The fixed penalty will also enable the police to offer educational training as an alternative to endorsement. Drivers would still be able to appeal any decision in court.

A national insurance broker is warning businesses to take precautions as the theft of catalytic converters from vehicles increases. According to latest figures the practice, which involves removing the converter from the exhaust pipe to sell onto scrap metal dealers, has doubled from 1,100 incidents to 2,300 over a five month period as the value of platinum, palladium and rhodium from which the converters are made increases.

As of September the use of part-worn passenger car and motorcycle tyres will no longer be permitted in the United Arab Emirates. This decision was announced by the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) on 15 March as part of a range on measures intended to regulate the whole tyre life cycle.
