North Yorkshire Police confirm that a 51-year old man has been arrested as part of the investigation into the fire that began at Newgen Recycling in Sherburn-in-Elmet on 16 January. Police describe the man as ‘local’ and say he has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service has spent the past day dealing with a fire at Newgen Recycling’s Sherburn-in-Elmet site in Leeds, and estimates that up to 15,000 tonnes of tyres may be involved. It initially estimated the presence of 1,000 tonnes of tyres.
Public prosecutor for the French commune of Amiens, Bernard Farret, reports that management at Goodyear Dunlop Tires France have filed an ‘arbitrary detention and abduction’ complaint following the enforced detainment of two senior managers at its Amiens Nord factory earlier this week. Production manager Michel Dheilly and human resources director Bernard Glaser were held for almost 30 hours and only freed at around 3:30pm Tuesday after police entered the building.
It must be a new record, following a freedom of information (FOI) request by the Institute of Advanced Motorists, it has emerged that a man from Liverpool accumulated 45 licence penalty points in November without losing his licence. In normal circumstance a driving ban follows the accumulation of 12 points. According to the information released by the DVLA in response to the IAM’s FOI, the points were all for failing to disclose the identity of the driver or exceeding statutory speed limit on a public road, between 1 October 2012 and 20 June 2013. By all accounts this beats the previous record of 42 points.

A study across 10 major UK cities, quoted on the IAAF e-bulletin, revealed that some 10.1 per cent of vehicles checked in were found to have a failed headlight, sidelight, rear or brake-light; a proportion equating to some 2.6 million vehicles on UK roads right now.

In Italy, the Guardia di Finanza (Fiscal Police) have arrested two brothers who are active within the tyre industry for tax evasion of more than €30 million; the two men allegedly falsified invoices in order to fraudulently represent the amount of tax, VAT and customs duties they were required to pay. Giti Tire has given its full support to TyreSafe’s Tyre Safety Month, with all 220 GT Radial Performance Centres (GTPCs) throughout the UK receiving joint-branded customer information packs. Throughout October, TyreSafe is running a ‘check your pressures’ campaign, and GTPCs have been issued with posters, leaflets, a Mr. McIntyre animation and a film to raise awareness of the importance of regular tyre maintenance. A dedicated infographic with tyre safety information for consumers has also been added to the GT Radial web site at www.gtradial.co.uk, where drivers can also search for their closest GTPC.

Research from vehicle remarketing specialist, British Car Auctions (BCA), suggests motorists will welcome news of new powers for police to tackle bad driving. In a survey of 800 motorists, BCA found that 'selfish driving' is the thing motorists hate most about other drivers, with 70 per cent citing this as one of their top three frustrations. 57 per cent of those polled were concerned about other motorists using a mobile phone while driving, while over a third (34 per cent) said motorists texting while driving was a major frustration.

His 75,000 mile journey will cross 84 countries in 18 months, a challenge which will be compounded by his decision to do it all on a Suzuki GSX-R1000. Bridgestone will follow the 36 year-old’s quest to raise £1 million for four different charities, supplying him with new tyres when necessary. Smart, who is raising money for The Children’s Trust Tadworth, the Born Free Foundation, the Royal British Legion and St Christopher’s Hospice, dropped by Bridgestone’s head offices in Warwick as he begins his round-the-world mission.
TRACKER, the stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) company, warns people not to save their home address into their SatNav system, as it could lead car thieves right to their front door. Thieves in stolen vehicles are using the in-car technology to find an owner’s home and burgle their house, as well as stealing their car.
The most dangerous drink drivers will now have to pass a medical before they are allowed back on the roads under a change in the law announced by Road Safety Minister Stephen Hammond. The changes, which come into force from 1 June 2013, mean that High Risk Offenders will need to pass a medical confirming they are no longer alcohol dependent at the end of their disqualification and before they start driving.
