Dunlop Roadsmart Apprehended as OE for US Police Bikes

BMW Motorrad has approved the Dunlop Roadsmart for use on all R 1200 RT-P police motorcycles in use in the US. The Roadsmart is designed to provide longer tyre life; the multi-compound rear tyre incorporates a longer-wearing compound in the tread centre along with a lateral grip compound in the shoulders for performance when cornering.

“Operating costs for police motors are a major issue for most agencies,” observed Frank Stevens, Authority Program Manager, BMW Motorrad USA.

Police Apprehend ‘Atomic Slasher’

What may well be the final chapter in the history of Cold War aggression has taken place in Boulder, Colorado: According to the Metro newspaper (a periodical described by its website as a “publishing phenomenon”) a 31-year-old man has named the disused Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant, located near the city of Denver, as a contributory factor in a spate of tyre slashings he undertook.

It is unclear why the man, whom police have identified as Alexander Kabelis, selected tyres as the target of his malice, and attempts by the protagonist himself to explain his actions have only added to the baffling nature of the crime.

Grudge Leads to Tyre Damage Conviction

Retired and at a loose end? Don’t know how to keep yourself occupied during those long idle days after the boss presents you with a watch, shakes your hand and sends you packing out the door? You could take up golf, travel with the wife, dabble in a rewarding spot of voluntary work – or you could nurture a two-year vendetta against a neighbour. A 70-year old Norwich man settled for this last option and embarked on an odyssey that recently ended in Norwich Magistrates Court.

Trevor Mallett – known to readers of the Norwich Evening News by the dramatic (but inaccurate) moniker the “OAP tyre slasher” – allegedly fell out with neighbour Carol Keable, 66, over a parking dispute a couple of years ago. It has been suggested that Mallet took exception to a vehicle parked opposite the front gate of his house, and decided to exact justice by “nailing” the offender, so to speak.

11 Illegal Immigrants Found Hiding in Motorsport Tyres

UK Border Agency officers working in Calais have stopped an attempt by 11 illegal immigrants to smuggle themselves into the UK – hidden in a lorry load of racing tyres. According to the Home Office, the French registered lorry was stopped at 08:04 on 30 April.

Clairoix Workers Occupy Conti Facility in Sarreguemines

The discovery that 200 burly policemen were waiting for them on the German side of the border led to a spontaneous change of plans for up to 500 workers from Continental’s Clairoix, France factory. Instead of heading in the direction of a company facility in Aachen, the workers have opted to avoid the Polizei and remain on French soil. Thus they have turned their attention to the Conti plant in Sarreguemines.

Reports: Man Killed in Alliance Factory Accident

An employee was reportedly killed in an industrial accident at Alliance Tire Company’s Hadera factory, according to the Jerusalem Post. Police are said to have launched an investigation into how the accident occurred. The Jerusalem Post reported that factory employees managed to remove the worker – in his fifties – from the machinery he was trapped in however medics were unable to revive him.

Prison for Tyre Dumping Ex-Policeman

A former Police inspector faces a year in prison for his role in the dumping of 175,000 tyres. Geraint Evans, who retired from the Police in 2005, was one of three people sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on April 8 for illegally disposing of tyres at sites in England and Wales. Also sentenced were Norman Cassidy, who received an eight-month prison sentence, and Evans’ partner Marilyn Hanks, who has been ordered to perform 240 hours of community service.

“You are thoroughly unscrupulous men with no regard whatsoever for the financial consequences of those you exploit,” commented Judge Stephen Hopkins QC, referring to Evans and Cassidy. “You were deliberately dealing in waste without a licence for purely financial reason and it’s had a substantial impact on the community.”

Fire At Tyregenics Recycling Plant

The Tyregenics tyre recycling plant, near Port Talbot in Wales, has been hit by a fire, in which around 100 one-tonne piles of rubber pellets were ablaze. More than 60 firefighters and 19 appliances tackled the blaze, which was finally brought under control at around 1.00am this morning.

No surrounding buildings were damaged, although local residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed because of the thick smoke. The plant recycles scrap tyres by turning them into rubber pellets and the cause of the fire is not yet known, although local police and fire incident officers are currently examining the site.

Sacramento Samurai Strikes

Tyres fitted to cars parked in the street in the town of Lincoln, California (to the north east of Sacramento) were sleeping a little easier this weekend, after a large sword that was used to slash city vehicles’ rubber was recovered by the police Friday (21 February). It was reported that a 19 year-old woman named Ashley Belisle was arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism through swordplay and was taken to Placer County Jail in Auburn, though was released later.

Posters on the Sacramento Bee’s crime blog, however, were ready to leap to conclusions. Blogger Soylent_Green_is_now heaped the blame on cultural influences, suggesting “one too many anime conventions” as the inspiration for the wave of destruction; meanwhile Briencook took a more reasoned approach, stating, “What a bizarre (and costly) crime spree. She must be dealing with some mental problems. If not, Big-O is hiring.” However, the frustration of finding your tyres ripped by a rapier was possibly best surmised by lovemycity916, who simply declared, “fu**in ninjas.”

Birla Workers Demand Arrests

Hundreds of workers of Birla Tyres have agitated before the Balasore collectorate, demanding the immediate arrest of the company’s top three executives. The workers, led by Birla Tyres Workers Union (BTWU) president Rajendra Bal, submitted separate memoranda to the District Collector and the SP with a demand to arrest the company’s senior president Deepak Tandon, general manager (personnel) Anil Upadhyay and another senior executive SR Roy in seven days.

The workers alleged that the three executives had attacked union’s general secretary Deepankar Bardhan and his colleague on Saturday. “When Bardhan refused to endorse the ‘No work no pay’ policy from February 16 to 28, when the company would remain closed during the period, due to the global meltdown, the three executives beat him up and Hari Mohan Das,” claimed Rajendra Bal. An injured Bardhan, who had been admitted to the district headquarters hospital, was later discharged. Police are investigating the incident.

Serial Tyre Damager Faces 39 Criminal Charges

Occasionally the tabloid aficionado within struggles to escape, and with it looms the threat of sensationalism spilling onto the staid and respectable pages of Tyres & Accessories. Fortunately this beast can be mastered and controlled – otherwise readers would now find the headline “Tyre Hater’s Three-Year Rampage Finally Deflated” staring back at them. It’s a good thing this hasn’t occurred.

Whether or not the 60-year old New York State man actually hated tyres is a question that remains unanswered, and it is debatable whether his activities constitute a rampage. What is fact, however, is that the man, named as Michael Delisio, has been harbouring various grievances against a range of neighbours since 2006, and venting his negative emotions by booby-trapping their driveways with tyre bursting nails. According to New York’s Journal News, four people have made more than 40 complaints about the man’s behaviour over the last two years.
