Michelin Poland Logistics Centre to Employ 1,000

A thousand new staff will be taken on by Michelin Poland when its logistics and production centre in Olsztyn, in the country’s northeast, is completed. The £180 million facility, being constructed on a 50,000 square metre site, will serve production in the domestic market, the rest of Europe and in North America.

Michelin’s growth in Poland has been made easier through the granting of a couple of concessions; the town of Olsztyn gave Michelin a 99-year lease on an 82 hectare site in early 2005, for which the tyremaker pays a sum of 100,000 zloty (£18,650) per month. That same year the Polish government implemented a number of tax rebates for the company and approved an aid package valued at around £11 million.

IPO for Online Tyre Retailer Oponeo.pl

Polish online tyre and automotive products retailer Oponeo.pl plans to issue up to 4 million new shares in an upcoming IPO and spend the proceeds on boosting working capital and the development of its IT systems, the company’s chief executive Dariusz Topolewski informed a press conference on July 5.

“We want to raise around a dozen million zloty (£2.15 million) in the IPO, maybe more,” Topolewski said. “We will offer up to 4 million new shares to investors.” The company’s equity is currently divided into around 8.676 million shares, and therefore founding shareholders will thus continue to control the business. They have also not ruled out buying more shares in the IPO. Current shareholders have a 12-month lock-up for their shares.

Oponeo.pl achieved net profits of PLN 1 million (£179,000) in 2006, up from PLN 135,000 (£24,000) a year earlier. Total revenue was PLN 29.8 million (£5.3 million), an increase of 70.29 per cent in 2005. The company estimates that it holds at least 60 per cent of Poland’s online tyre sale market and between 1 and 1.5 per cent of the country’s total tyre market.

Bridgestone President Honoured with Polish Award

Shoshi Arakawa, chairman of the board, CEO and president of Bridgestone Corporation, has been awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland at an awards ceremony held at the offices of the Polish Foreign Ministry on July 2. The award was presented by Poland’s minister of Foreign Affairs Witold Waszczykowski in the presence of Pawel Wojciechowski, president of the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ) and Ryuichi Tanabe, the Japanese ambassador to Poland.

The Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland is one of the most prestigious Polish orders that can be bestowed for economic relations. “The Commander’s Cross you kindly awarded me today, as I understand, is the demonstration of your high evaluation of Bridgestone’s contribution to the economic development of Poland. I can also recognise how high your expectation on Bridgestone is for the future” commented Arakawa. “It makes me more deeply impressed to have this famous and prestigious Commander’s Cross in a special year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Poland and Japan.”

Goodyear Poland’s Premio Chain Grows

Goodyear Poland’s recently formed Premio retail chain has opened some 45 new outlets in the last eight month. According to the Warsaw Business Journal, the aim is to increase this to 80 by the end of the year. The news follows reports in February that Goodyear had committed to investing over US$100 million to upgrade the UHP production capabilities of the plant over the next 3-4 years. Debica, Europe’s biggest tyre plant according to some, was acquired by Goodyear in 1996 as the company sought to tap the fast-growing Polish market and develop a production base for exports. Exports accounted for 75 per cent of Debica sales last year.

UK Car Registrations Up During March

New passenger car registrations across Europe during the month of March were recorded as 1,822,180 units, approximately the same as March 2006. In the UK registrations were up 3.1 per cent, with some 449,287 new registrations during March, a strong new car registration month due to the half-yearly plate changeover.

New EU member states again showed the greatest increase in registrations, a 13.6 per cent rise overall. Poland’s March 2007 registrations were the highest recorded since it joined the EU, a 29.4 per cent jump to 27,969 registrations, and confirm the recovery of new car sales in this country. Estonia recorded an even more impressive 59.5 per cent increase, although it must be noted that total registrations for that country during March were only 2,881.

New “Smart” Blades from Pincott

Pincott Europe Limited, have been developing a new “Smart” blade which unusually is not flat, but is produced in the form of a sine wave. This sinusoidal shape allows the blade to cut progressively across the face of the tyre and not in a straight line as all other blades do. This has the effect of breaking up the surface more evenly and cutting the rubber from the tyre in a much smoother fashion.

Bridgestone Plans to Build Factory in Poland

Bridgestone Corp. is ready to build a 300 million euro factory in the north west of Poland, according to newspapers Puls Biznesu and Gazeta Wyborcza. The papers said construction will start in spring 2007. The factory will cover 100 hectares and will be located near Stargard Szczecinski. Puls Biznesu said the plant will be operational within three years and will eventually employ 700-800 people. When asked to comment on the reports, Bridgestone Poland said it had yet to make any definite decision. The company would only say it plans to invest in Eastern Europe and expects to make its mind up in two to three months.

Rial Group Merges Companies into “Uniwheels”

As a result of increasing internationalisation and the expansion of business, the Rial group has decided to bring all of its business that are not pure marketing companies under the one unified name. The new group will be called “Uniwheels United Wheels Group,” the company has reported. As a result Rial’s Polish production unit, Rial Aluguss, will immediately be renamed “Uniwheels Production (Poland) Sp.zo.o.” However the firm’s existing distribution companies (Rial Leichtmetalfelgen GmbH, Alutec Leichtmetalfelgen GmbH and ARC Alurad GmbH/Wheels24.com) will keep their existing names.

Delphi Adds 290 Part Numbers

Delphi has added 290 new shock absorber references to its 2005 aftermarket parts catalogue, giving the company 97 per cent coverage of the European vehicle parc. Delphi’s shocks are categorised as either “Delphi de Carbon Comfort” twintube or “Delphi de Carbon Performance monotube.” To help customers find the right part quickly, each vehicle marque is listed alphabetically and then in numerical order according to model and engine size. Columns across the page show the correct monotube and twintube references suitable for the front or rear of the vehicle.

Hankook to Restart Talks With Other Countries

(Akron/Tire Review) Reports out of Slovakia say that Hankook Tire Co will restart negotiations with other eastern European nations regarding its plans for a 500 million euro tyre plant. Slovakia lost its exclusive bargaining rights after cabinet ministers rejected a government aid package worth some 110 million euros.
It is expected that Hankook officials will renew talks with Poland and Hungary, the two the countries the South Korean tyremaker held negotiations with before it selected Slovakia in May.

Hankook Chooses Slovakia

Hankook Tire Co has chosen Slovakia as the location of its new Eastern European factory, Slovakia’s economy minister, Pavol Rusko, is quoted as saying. The company, now plans to make an investment worth around 500 million euros in the country.

Hankook Receives Government Aid for New Poland Plant

(Akron/Tire Review) Hankook has received final confirmation of an offer from the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency for the tiremaker to build a $500 million tire plant in Poland. Hankook could receive approximately $60 million in government aid and incentives, according to media reports.

Hankook Leans Towards Slovakia

Media reports are continuing to circulate about exactly where in Eastern Europe Hankook will make its proposed $500 million investment. Numerous previous reports have stated that the company is interested in manufacturing in this region, and that the shortlist has narrowed to two countries (Poland and Slovakia). Now a Polish newspaper has added further information. A Rzeczpospolita report suggests that the Korean company is leaning towards Slovakia because of a governmental policy offering “flat tax” incentives to foreign investors.

Hankook Tire Looks to Eastern Europe

Speculation around Hankook’s suggested move to Eastern Europe continues. For months now different sources have suggested that the South Korean company is planning a plant to supply regional carmakers like the Slovak unit of Kia Motors Corp.

Bridgestone Plans 50th Tyre Plant

After the company only recently confirmed plans to build its 48th tyre factory in Brazil, Japan’s Nihon Keizai is reporting that Bridgestone will build two more facilities. According to the newspaper the new factories will be built in China and Eastern Europe at a total cost of more than £253 million. The Chinese plant will produce bus/truck and passenger car products in China and is likely to be built in Huizhou, Guangdong province. As for Eastern Europe, a number of locations have been the subject of media speculation. Possible countries include Slovakia or Poland where Bridgestone already has a tyre factory.
