Point S UK Growth Ahead of Schedule

The plans of international tyre buying and marketing cooperative Point S to fill in the gaps in its European market map with a UK operation are reported to be “ahead of schedule.” In less than a year since membership talks began and just four months after the news of Point S (UK) Ltd formation was announced, the company’s plans for the establishment of one of the largest retail networks in Britain are said to be running so well that they could meet next year’s target before the end of 2010.

ECI International Reports 5% Rise in Brityrex Visitors

Compared to the 2007 edition of Brityrex, ECI International says that the number of visitors rose by 5 per cent at the 2010 show earlier this month. Exhibitors at the UK tyre trade show told ECI that the show had been a success, with many reporting excellent sales and new business opportunities from the three-day exhibition at the Manchester Central convention centre. Representatives from diverse companies such as Point S, Apaseal and Kings Road Tyres were among those voicing their appreciation for the event.

Point S (UK) Aiming for 100 Members, Recruitment Drive at Brityrex 2010

The latest addition to the influential Point S European buying and marketing group – Point S (UK) – is set to embark on a recruitment drive at this October’s Brityrex International show in Manchester. Independent tyre retailers will be the focus of a membership drive by the alliance between the powerful French Point S group and UK Tyres, the network of 13 independent retailers which has signed up to become the British arm of Point S. Point S currently operates in 20 European countries and has more than 1,900 independently-owned tyre retail outlets in membership and sales of over 11 million tyres per year.

UK Tyres currently has 13 member companies with a combined total of 56 retail outlets but Sunderland is confident that figure will grow quickly towards the 100 member companies targeted over the next 12 months.

Point S Launched in UK Market

The Point S name will soon be one recognised by UK motorists following the signing of a partnership agreement with UK Tyre Group Ltd. The association of 13 independent dealers will represent the Point S network at its 56 outlets in England and Wales. Representatives from UK Tyre Group told Tyres & Accessories that the Point S rollout at outlets would begin “as soon as we have received the necessary planning permission.”

Starco 20% Ahead of Last Year

When it comes to the Reifen 2010 exhibition in June, Starco will not only show itself as a supplier of tyres, tubes and flaps for the aftermarket, but also a wheel supplier and more, company representatives told recently Tyres & Accessories.

The business, which originally developed form an aftermarket operation in Germany has reportedly developed by selling small tyres for internal transportation like wheel barrows, sack truck, turf tyres and more. However, over the years the company has dug deeper into the business with increased agricultural, trailer, caravan and industrial sales. As a result the company reports that it will show “a very selected range of tyres of great importance for our further growth.”

Point S Expands into Finland

Finland has become the 18th country to host branches belonging to the Point S tyre retail network. The Point S concept and image will now be adapted and promoted by the Full Fit Team network in Finland. The first outlets will reportedly be harmonized with the Point S colours in the coming days.

According to an official release on the news, the new branches’ business model will be the same as in every Point S country – the local structure and the members remain fully independent, sharing a common pan European signage and network policy.

Point S – From Private Brand to Leading Brand

In 2005 Point S operated in nine different European countries. Four years later it is almost double that. Currently the group consists of 1700 tyre outlets, run by 1000 different owners, commanding a 6 per cent retail market share in both the passenger car and truck tyre segments across Europe. Since the first Point S was opened in 1971, the network has used the same business model in every country its has grown into – allowing independent tyre entrepreneurs to control their business while allowing everyone to benefit from the strong brand and economies of scale that come with a large group.

However, the group’s private brand strategy is also a key part of the company’s business and by the time Point S development announced that the France-based international tyre retail group had expanded into Bulgaria (its 17th country) in January 2009, this part of the business had become an exemplary model in the tyre market. Tyres & Accessories recently interviewed Point S Development’s international operations director, Fabien Bouquet, and found out why private brands are so important.

Point-S and Team Collaborate in Fleet Joint Venture

Over the weekend two of Germany’s largest independent dealer cooperatives, point S and Team, negotiated the terms of a joint venture that will see the two companies cooperate in the local fleet business. A letter of intent relating to what one might call the “team S” joint venture was signed this morning (Monday 29 September 2008) and will take effect 1 January 2009. The 50:50 joint venture will cover the area of fleet, large-scale sales and key account business. The negotiations were led by Juergen Pischinger and Peter Lüdorf and sought to synergise the benefits of Team’s strength in the commercial vehicle tyre business and point-S’s in passenger car tyres.

Between them the two cooperatives run over 1,100 service stations across Germany and thus have broad market coverage. Details of the name and headquarters of the new joint venture and personnel consequences are not yet clear, however layoffs are not planned. Instead the company hopes to operate a European-wide service in the future.

Baake Celebrates 35 Years With Bandag

Headquartered in Heusenstamm, Germany, Baake GmbH & Co. KG is celebrating 35 years as a Bandag franchisee. In recognition of the long relationship, Karl Robert Baake, general manager, was presented with a commemorative plaque by Mike Tirona, vice president and general manager of Bandag EMEA.

Although the franchise contract was signed in 1971, Baake’s proud history stretches back to 1932, when the company began life as a tyre curing shop. The knowledge gained here proved a valuable asset after WW II when it integrated hot-cap retreading of car tyres into the business.

Point S Urges Members to Have ‘Courage for the Future’

At the end of January point S, Germany’s largest cooperative, held its second annual meeting since it merged with competing buying group, VRG. Although more than two years have passed since the merger, the meeting revealed that the dust hasn’t settled yet, and, following a number of management changes, there is still plenty of strong feeling on the subject. Nevertheless, nearly 750 participants travelled to Leipzig’s Congress Center for the two-day meeting and heard about the organisation’s “courage for the future.”

Point S International Keeps on Growing

The leading network of independent tyre dealers in Europe is set to grow. The Hungarian point S organisation has recently added seven new Service Centers so that the overall coverage in Hungary is nation-wide now with 37 of these centres, according to a statement released by point S International. The company says that a further growth of the number of service stations is very likely. 1,500 service centres in nine European countries are part of the point S International organisation. Countries represented include Germany, Austria, Denmark, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Poland and Hungary.

Point S Appoint Olivier Steier as New President

The general assembly of Point S in France has announced the appointment of Olivier Steier as its new president. Mr Steier succeeds Jean-Piere Legros who decided not to stand for re-election.

New Danish point S Members

Danish group Dek Ringen, with 31 members and 35 outlets, has joined the European point S network. The cooperation already had 700 outlets in France, Germany, Italy, Belgium and The Netherlands. The European Tyre Coordination Committee (ETC) coordinates all activities of point S members across Europe.

Reifen Junginger Under The point S Roof

Speculation is now at an end: on 14th April, the German tyre sales company Reifen Junginger was sold. The new owner is Josef Herl, MD of point S Reifen Herl GmbH and one of the founders of sales cooperative Partner GmbH. Herl plans to completely restructure the ‘new’ point S Reifen Junginger over the coming months.

Servicing The Car Fleet Market

The car fleet market varies from country to country across Europe, but in countries such as Germany and the UK, it is an important percentage of the car market. Increasingly, the owner of the car fleet is paying a fleet management company to maintain the cars and carry out maintenance, tyre replacements and so on. Many leasing companies expect to expand on a pan-European basis, which means that, increasingly, the service provider has to have continent-wide coverage. In the UK, the market leader in this field is Kwik-Fit Fleet, followed by ATS Euromaster, FTM Tyrefit (an affiliation of independent retailers, giving nationwide coverage and which has linked up with point S for coverage on mainland Europe) and National Tyres & Autocare. All these have operations outside the UK. It is easy to see the attraction of the fleet market – it is estimated that sales of tyres, batteries and exhausts to this sector are worth £180 million in the UK alone – and for the tyre manufacturers, it is strategically important as a means of increasing market share. The fleet customer is extremely demanding; not only in terms of service, but also in management reports and information, so the fleet service provider has to be much more than a mere tyre supplier. The market is very competitive and the motto of the provider is ‘service, service, service’. The attitude is summed up by Simon Roper, Managing Director of Kwik-Fit Fleet, who says, “Nobody takes tomorrow’s business for granted.”
