Raikkonen, Lotus ‘understand’ Pirelli tyres best to win in Australia

With much of the grid employing different tyre strategies at the season-opening Australian grand prix, Pirelli’s Motorsport director Paul Hembery believes that the winning drive by Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen displayed the best understanding of the “deliberately bold” selection of rubber. Raikkonen won the Australian Grand Prix using a two stop strategy, having started the race on the P Zero Red supersoft tyre and then completing two stints on the P Zero White medium tyre. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, the Finnish driver’s closest rival used a three-stop strategy, as did the rest of the top six.

‘Value that goes places’ – Pirelli’s Formula brand

Information released by Pirelli indicates that its new commercial vehicle second brand, Formula, will be released in steer, drive and trailer fitments; the initial line-up includes five steer sizes, five drive sizes and three trailer sizes. At present, European label ratings are only available for two steer and two drive sizes; the 295/80 R 22.5 and 315/80 R 22.5 steer tyres both achieved a ‘B’ rating for wet grip, ‘C’ for rolling resistance and 72dB external noise. The size 295/80 R 22.5 and 315/80 R 22.5 drive tyres were both rated as ‘B’ for wet grip, ‘D’ for rolling resistance and 74dB for external noise. The other nine sizes are ‘in preparation’.

Pirelli to launch associate CV brand

Italian tyre maker Pirelli intends to introduce a second brand of commercial vehicle tyres that takes its name, if not its heritage, from the company’s F1 involvement. At a recent dealer meeting in Munich, Germany, Pirelli presented examples of an associated tyre brand; this new, yet to be released range is called ‘Formula’, and the Pirelli says its introduction will complete the company’s heavy vehicle product range. Further details about the Formula brand are yet to be made public.

Pirelli has a tweet or two in store for motorsport fans. The Formula One tyre supplier has launched a new Twitter page where Pirelli motorsport aficionados can share and receive news on the company’s worldwide events.

Kumho reports initial 2013 rally successes

The 2013 rally season is still young, but Kumho shares it is ”already making its mark” on the UK championships. For example, Alex Allingham's ex-Prodrive Subaru Impreza N10 that took outright honours at the Rally Marketing Mid-Wales Stages event on 3 March did so courtesy of Kumho gravel tyres.

Pirelli introduces new North America dealer programme

Pirelli Tire North America has launched a new associate dealer programme. It is known as FasTrack, and Tire Review reports that dealers and their sales teams can earn rewards on all eligible Pirelli tyres sold at retail. Those enrolled also will be provided access to Pirelli’s exclusive online training network.

Pirelli results, outlook confirm emphasis on premium segment

In reporting its 2012 results, Pirelli & C. SpA says it achieved “record profitability” last year thanks to its “focus on premium and efficiencies.” Net profit rose 27.4 per cent year-on-year to 398.2 million euros on the back of a 7.4 per cent increase of sales to 6.1 billion euros. EBIT rose 34.2 per cent to 780.8 million euros and the EBIT margin went up from 10.3 per cent in 2011 to 12.9 per cent last year.

Pirelli completes its ‘01’ range

With the recent launch of the ST:01 Neverending Energy line, Pirelli says its ‘01’ commercial vehicle tyre range is now complete. The 01 portfolio now covers the ‘R’ segment (medium to long range), ‘W’ (winter tyres), ‘H’ (long range) and ‘G’ (for mixed road and construction site use).

Pirelli responding to Crossover growth

Pirelli has identified the popularity of what it calls “crossover utility vehicles” (CUV), which continued to grow in popularity over the past year. The more compact SUV has begun to bring new motorists to the segment, with both the safety and comfort of its larger cousins, but also the promise of improved fuel economy. Pirelli’s Scorpion Verde in particular has provided an option within its range to motorists attracted to a more efficient SUV, designed as a low rolling resistance 4×4 tyre.

Geneva supercars to roll on Pirelli

Pirelli tyres will feature as original equipment on four high-profile Geneva show debuts. The Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster and Maserati’s latest Quattroporte both feature bespoke versions the Italian tyre maker’s P Zero, while a tailor-made version of the P Zero Corsa will be supplied to the McLaren P1 and Ferrari’s Enzo replacement, the LaFerrari.

Pirelli to denote homologations on P Zero, Cinturato P7 sidewalls

One of the innovations Pirelli has on display at the Geneva Motor Show is ‘autographed’ original equipment tyres. Going into greater detail, the Italian tyre maker explains that the so-called autographs are unique sidewall markings that indicate the rubber compound used in a tyre has been specifically developed to meet a particular vehicle manufacturer’s requirements. Pirelli will include this marking on OEM homologated versions of its P Zero and Cinturato P7.

BMTR presented with PPC award

Pirelli UK has formally presented BMTR with its annual Performance Centre of the Year Award at a presentation at its flagship outlet. The presentation took place on Tuesday 26 February at BMTR’s Perry Barr, Birmingham outlet following a tour of the depot and warehouse. In attendance at the presentation was Pirelli UK managing director, Dominic Sandivasci, as well as Pirelli UK’s marketing and sales directors, Wayne Nickless and Jason Sugden.

Greco resigns from Pirelli board

Pirelli & C. SpA has announced the resignation of Mario Greco from his role as a member of the company’s Board of Directors. The reason given for his resignation is the “considerable commitment” required of him by the reorganisation of the Generali Group (Assicurazioni Generali). Greco took over as CEO of the Italian insurer in August 2012.

West Europe pcr capacity down 38M units in last 5 years

Just a day after Bridgestone announced it will close its passenger car tyre factory in Bari, Italy, DB Equity Research Automotive analyst Gaetan Toulemonde comments that the tyre industry has reduced its passenger car tyre capacity in Western Europe by 38 million units. Toulemonde puts the current Western European passenger tyre market at 275 million units; 65 million are supplied to OEM customers, the remaining 210 million are sold on the replacement market. This number, Toulemonde adds, has remained stable over the last five years – the decrease in local production being compensated by higher imports such as those from China, which have doubled over the last five years to 50 million units a year.
