Confirmation of Pirelli Angel GT mileage still pending

Pirelli describes its new Angel GT sport touring tyre as being “100 per cent Italian Gran Turismo.” Compared with its predecessor it is said to not only offer improved grip and wet performance – as recently demonstrated on the deck of an Italian aircraft carrier – but also to give significantly higher mileage than the Angel ST. During last autumn’s unveiling of Ducati’s Multistrada 1200 S Granturismo, which has the Angel GT as an original equipment fitment, the Italian tyre maker reported a 15 per cent increase in mileage – now, in spring, this figure has doubled to 30 per cent. The editors at Neue ReifenZeitung, Tyres & Accessories’ German affiliate, asked Pirelli to explain why the reported improvement in mileage is suddenly much higher.

Pirelli remains an ‘Investor In People’

Pirelli Tyres Limited has retained its accreditation as an Investor in People (IIP) for another three years after the Italian firm passed an audit that took place in Burton upon Trent and Carlisle. Run by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, Investors in People provides independent assessments to track a company’s progress.

Pirelli signs Russian retail MoU

According to a forecast published by IHS Global Insight in April, Russia’s premium car segment is expected to grow 5.2 per cent this year and 8.5 per cent in 2014. Pirelli focuses its strategy on this segment and therefore views Russia as a key market. Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Russian oil and gas company Rosneft, the Italian tyre maker will soon begin construction work on its first flagship ‘PZero Platinum’ tyre shop within the country.

Larger sizes a UHP segment highlight

Big appears to be beautiful when it comes to ultra high performance tyres. Continental shares that falling European demand for 18-inch rim diameter and lower UHP tyres over the last couple of years has been compensated for by growing demand in the larger sizes.

Bridgestone’s Russia plant means more competition for Nokian and others

Bridgestone’s decision to open a tyre manufacturing plant in Russia is likely to result in more intense competition between the non-domestic tyremakers in general as well as Nokian in particular. The news also appeared to dash hopes that Bridgestone (Nokian’s biggest single shareholder) might buy it out at some point (see below).

Now that Bridgestone has shared details of its plan to build a passenger car tyre ready to produce tyres in 2016, the race is on to assess the impact of the move on the current market situations. Indigenous tyremakers such as Nizhnekamskshina aside, there are two reasons why this announcement means more intense competition than ever between the likes of Pirelli, Yokohama, Continental and especially Nokian (for which Russia is a key profit centre) and Bridgestone.

Biaggi performs naval manoeuvres with Pirelli sport touring tyre

In a test reminiscent of a stunt pulled by Top Gear’s original Stig, but fortunately with a different end result, double Superbike World Champion and four-time 250cc World Champion Max Biaggi tested the braking qualities of Pirelli’s new Angel GT motorcycle tyre on the deck of an aircraft carrier.

Third incarnation of Pirelli’s Sottozero released

Pirelli has launched the third generation of its Sottozero winter tyre. The Winter Sottozero 3 is designed for cars with medium to large capacity engines and places an emphasis on grip in all conditions and tyre longevity.

Pirelli to review European supply/demand imbalance

In its most recent report on market trends, Pirelli’s figures showed car and light commercial vehicle volumes in Europe to be down 13 per cent year-to-date in the OE segment and 10 per cent in the replacement business. While separate information for premium tyres is not given, on 5 April Pirelli stated that in response to the economic crisis in Europe and its impact on demand for premium tyres, it is “carrying out a significant review of its commercial structures” in the European market. The Italian tyre maker says this review entails, among other things, more closely integrating its high-end tyre production capacity in Europe with those markets where demand for premium products in highest. These markets are presumably the US and rapidly developing markets – areas where Pirelli says demand is growing approximately three times faster than overall global demand for passenger car tyres.

Pirelli honours its nine best suppliers of 2012

With Pirelli Group spending around 4 billion euro acquiring goods and services in 2012, you can understand why the company wants to honour its best suppliers. That’s why Pirelli today gave out its Supplier Award 2013, in recognition of the suppliers who have “contributed in a significant way to Pirelli’s Premium strategy throughout the world.”

£100,000 worth of Pirelli tyres stolen at knifepoint

Kent Police is appealing for witnesses to a knifepoint robbery of about 1,500 tyres from two HGV lorries near the Dartford River Crossing. Officers were called just before 7.15am on 8 April after Pirelli brand tyres, worth a combined total of about £100,000, were stolen from two artic lorries. Neither driver was injured in the robbery.

Hankook takes on Junior WRC tyre supply

This year, Hankook takes over from Pirelli as sole supplier of the newly-renamed Junior WRC Championship. The Korean manufacturer will provide the series – which used to be known as the WRC Academy – with tyres from its Ventus range. The Ventus Z range will be used for tarmac rallies and the Venus R during gravel events. Both tyres have tread patterns specifically designed for use on front-wheel-drive cars such as the Ford Fiesta R2, the car all entrants in the 2013 FIA Junior WRC Championship will drive. Detailed tyre specifications and the number of tyres to be provided to competitors will be announced prior to each championship round.

Pirelli announces German management changes

Changes to the management structure of Pirelli Deutschland’s sales and marketing team took effect on 1 April. Amongst these tweaks is an extension of Sascha Kemper’s area of responsibility. In addition to his current position as Germany-wide sales manager for the original equipment truck business and Northern Germany sales manager for the replacement market truck business, Kemper has taken over as head of the replacement truck business in Southern Germany from Sascha Ihrig.

Pirelli industrial incident returns to the news

Lurid local newspaper headlines have rekindled media interest in the industrial incident that resulted in the death of a man at Pirelli’s Carlisle tyre factory. However, with the Police having already confirmed that they are no longer pursuing a criminal investigation, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation ongoing and with no date for the inquest, there is little more to report and no further comment from the parties involved.

Tyre manufacturers are four of top 500 global brands

Bridgestone may remain as the world’s most valuable tyre brand, according to new brand valuation research by Brand Finance, but there are actually four tyre brands in the top 500 list.

The annual Brand Finance Global 500 showed that while Bridgestone suffered some slippage from 2012 and Michelin gained some ground, the Japanese tyremaker’s lead brand retained its top spot. Bridgestone placed 254th overall on the global rankings, down from 2012 placement at 235th. The brand was valued at $4.5 billion, up slightly from 2012’s $4.4 billion valuation, earning a brand rating of AA-.

Van den Ban hires new truck sales manager

Netherlands-based wholesaler Van den Ban intends to expand its activities in area of truck tyre distribution, and to facilitate this has employed a new truck tyre sales manager. On 18 March, Hans Bakker began in this position; as truck tyre sales manager he will be responsible for expanding Van den Ban’s truck tyre portfolio as well as for sales.
