Pirelli Still Interested in Formula One Tyre Supply

While all the buzz earlier in the week surrounded the surprise revelation that Cooper Avon was in the running for the contract to supply Formula One’s tyres, now there is the possibility of a third way. Italian manufacturer Pirelli appears to have thrown its hat into the ring, apparently prompted by Michelin’s suggestion that 18” wheels replace the 13” diameter products currently used in the sport in a move designed to make F1’s tyres more relevant to other sports tyres. Motorsport website Crash.net quotes Pirelli chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera as saying the increase in size and the potential competition desired by Michelin “is something we have been pushing for for years.” He told ANSA – the Italian news agency – that the company “would consider a return to F1” should the Michelin-proposed regulations pass into F1 law.

Pirelli Shareholders Approve 2009 Financials

During an ordinary session meeting held on April 21, Pirelli & C. SpA shareholders approved the company’s 2009 financial statements and agreed to the distribution of a dividend of 0.0145 euros per ordinary share and 0.0406 euros per savings share. The payment date will be 27 May 2010.

Lagerfeld’s Pirelli Calendar Cast Leaked

German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld is reported to be locked in a Paris studio this week, taking the pictures for Pirelli’s 2011 calendar. Isabeli Fontana – a Brazilian supermodel involved in the shoot – tweeted a picture of the models to be featured, which include Heidi Mount, Magdalena Frackowiak, Bianca Balti, and Natasha Poly.

Evidence & Expert Opinion Backs Young Driver Initiative – Pirelli

In February the Young Driver programme, which Pirelli is a major sponsor of, received a measure of negative press after the publishing of comments by a Police Federation inspector and a RoSPA representative. Ken Clinton, head of road safety for the RoSPA, went as far as commenting that the scheme “will probably mean youngsters will take fewer lessons when they come to learn to drive, and if they take fewer lessons they will get less experience.” In defence of the scheme, Pirelli has responded that a flood of evidence supports the initiative and the positive impact it will have on reducing the number of road accidents across Britain.

Pirelli Opens Historic Archives to the Public

Last year the Pirelli Group, in order to establish a lasting record of the company’s activities and the role it has played in Italy’s social and entrepreneurial history, established the Pirelli Foundation. On April 14, 2010 the company presented the Foundation and opened its Historic Archives, which it describes as being the Foundation’s “heart”, to the city of Milan. The presentation ceremony took place in the presence of Pirelli chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera; deputy chairman Alberto Pirelli; honorary chairwoman of the Foundation Cecilia Pirelli; and Foundation director Antonio Calabrò. All the materials kept in the archives, which since 1972 have been under Archival Superintendency protection due to their historic importance, are now available to students, researchers and members of the public.

Michelin & Pirelli Top US OE Tyre Study

Results of the latest J.D. Power and Associates survey into OE tyre satisfaction levels in the US place Michelin and Pirelli on top in terms of positive consumer response. In the survey of 29,818 new-vehicle owners who purchased a 2008 or 2009 model-year vehicle, Michelin was ranked highest in the luxury, passenger car and truck/utility segments of the 2010 U.S. Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Study, with strong results for tyre wearability recorded in the passenger car and luxury segments and for ride in the truck/utility segment. Pirelli came out on top in the performance sport segment and performed particularly well in the tyre appearance and tyre ride factors.

Pirelli Star Driver Kicks off for 2010

The second season of the Pirelli Star Driver programme gets underway on April 15 at the Rally of Turkey, and Pirelli Star Driver supervisor Phil Short anticipates his fresh charges’ first taste of World Rally Championship action will teach them plenty. “I’ve already suggested to them that they treat the Rally of Turkey as an extended test session, to get more distance and time in the car under their belts – and to think about bringing the cars to the finish with a solid result,” he advised, adding: “You don’t learn too much when your car is on a trailer.”

Pirelli Launches Scorpion Verde: Full Details

Ecological friendliness may not be the first characteristic one would stereotypically think of to describe sports utility vehicles, but Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli believe it has spotted an opportunity within this seeming anachronism. The company launched its new road-biased Scorpion Verde tyre, developed to meet what it perceives as the SUV market’s need for increased fuel efficiency. With more than just one eye on upcoming tyre labelling regulations, Pirelli claims that the Scorpion Verde boasts greatly improved rolling resistance from previous high performance SUV offerings, making it “the first high-performance eco tyre for vehicles with the highest environmental impact – SUVs and Crossovers.”

Pirelli to Supply WRC for Another Year

The FIA has extended its World Rally Championship (WRC) control tyre deal with Pirelli for another year, reportedly enabling it to take another year to decide whether or not to open up the series up to competing tyre makers in 2012. Pirelli was the only firm to tender for the 2011-2013 contract, but Autosport reported that the FIA and Pirelli reached a “single season solution” in talks.

Chinese Tyremakers Increase Prices

Chinese tyremakers are being forced to increase their prices on the back of record natural rubber highs and US import tariffs. Domestic Chinese tyre retail prices have jumped by up to 10 per cent per unit, China Daily reported. Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co, purportedly the largest rubber maker in China, raised its tyre prices 5 per cent, according to the company. Meanwhile China Daily reported that competitors South China Tire & Rubber Co Ltd and Qingdao Double Star Tire Co Ltd have raised prices by 5 and 10 per cent respectively.

Goodyear Dunlop Signs Cemex Deal

Cemex UK has switched to Goodyear Dunlop and its TruckForce network. The agreement means Goodyear Dunlop will now supply and service Cemex tyre requirements.

The diverse nature of the Cemex product range means that the company has a wide range of specific freight requirements with bespoke vehicle designs in their truck fleet. For example, the trucks designed to carry Cemex’s aggregate material on and off-road will use Dunlop SP382 tyres on the steer axle. This tyre has a special top belt to minimize the risk of stone penetration – a typical hazard in this industry. However, the Cement distribution fleet will use Goodyear Regional RHS11 tyres which are optimized for maximum mileage and efficiency for predominantly on-road use.

Natural Rubber Heading for US$3.4/kg

The cost of natural rubber price is reportedly heading for a new high of US$3.4/kg, having more than doubled during the last year (1.5/kg to USD 3.4/kg,RSS3 grade). The news that already high prices are still on the up, highlighted in a Deutsche Bank reported published today, is expected to cause two further prices increases from tyremakers this year. It is expected to take “four to six” months for the record high prices to have an effect on the tyre companies’ profit and loss accounts.

DEKRA Testing Highlights Dunlop SportSmart Mileage

Independent tread wear testing carried out by safety and quality specialist DEKRA has delivered a positive result for Dunlop’s new SportSmart motorcycle tyre. The Dunlop tyre was testing against Michelin’s Power Pure tyres, Pirelli’s Diablo Rosso and Bridgestone’s BT016 at DEKRA’s Narbonne Test Centre in France during January and February. During the testing staff from the centre rode 2009 model Suzuki GSX-R1000 bikes over a 4480 kilometre selection of open roads in southwest France – 15 per cent motorway and 85 per cent open and city roads, of which 45 per cent were twisting mountain roads – in order to compress the effects of many weeks of hard European sports riding into a considerably shorter time span.
