Pirelli Producing More Royal Rubber

It’s been more than eight years since Her Majesty the Queen last had new tyres fitted on her Bentley, and although she’s probably not clocked up excessive miles in the limousine, some tyre and vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing tyres every six years to avoid risks associated with tyre aging. Perhaps with this in mind, a replacement set has been ordered for her 2002 Bentley – a procedure a little more involved than just popping into the local fast-fit centre.

Pirelli Adds Mixing Room to Rome, Georgia Operation

Pirelli Tire North America has added a compound mixing facility to MIRS automated tyre manufacturing facility located at the company’s North American headquarters in Rome, Georgia. The $12 million US investment is designed to support the Pirelli Group’s strategic growth plan for the North American market and “help PTNA sustain its market gains and the 30 per cent sales increase realized over the past three years.” Since its inception in 2001, PTNA’s Rome, Georgia facility has benefitted from more than $92 million in investments from Pirelli.

Pirelli Completes WRC Tyre Supply Commitment

The conclusion of the Wales Rally GB on November 14 also marked the end of Pirelli’s time as official tyre supplier to the FIA World Rally Championship. As of 2011 the WRC is being opened up to multiple tyre suppliers, and this change in regulations helped Pirelli decide to focus its motorsport energies on Formula One as of next year. Despite this, the Italian tyre maker views its three years’ WRC involvement as a very successful time, and Pirelli will continue its commitment to rallying through supporting the new WRC Academy, which replaces the Junior World Rally Championship as the first port of call for drivers aspiring to one day become world champion. The company will also provide the opportunity for six young drivers to contest the series as part of the Pirelli Star Driver programme, which it has supported for the last two seasons.

Pirelli's Mexican Plant to Have 5 million UHP/HP Capacity by 2015

Pirelli's new manufacturing facility, which the tyre-maker announced last week, will be located in Silao, Mexico, about 400 kilometers from Mexico City, reports Tire Review. The $210 million plant, which will produce high-performance and ultra high-performance tyres for cars and light trucks, will generate 700 direct and 300 indirect jobs in the local Silao area. The facility will cover an area of 120,000 square meters and will be operational in 2012. Targeted daily production capacity is 10,500 tyres with an annual capacity of 3.5 million units in 2014 increasing to approximately 5 million units by 2015.

Metzeler Renews National Superstock Tyre Supply Agreement

Pirelli recently renewed its tyre supply commitments to the British Superbike (BSB) and Supersport Championships, and now the company’s Metzeler brand has been confirmed as the control tyre supplier for the 1000ccc and 600cc National Superstock championships for a further five years. The German based manufacturer says these two “important production based classes within the prestigious MCE British Superbike series” have great importance as they offer Metzeler the chance to demonstrate the quality of its ‘over the counter’ tyres.

Triumph Opts for Pirelli on Tiger 800

Motorcycle manufacturer Triumph has selected Pirelli’s ‘Scorpion Trail’ as original equipment on its new Tiger 800. The Pirelli tyre has been described as “ideal for the extremely varied riding conditions” of Triumph’s new middleweight motorcycle, a 799cc, 94bhp three-cylinder machine aimed squarely at the important and ever-growing ‘adventure sport’ market. The Tiger 800 will come fitted with 110/80 19 Scorpion Trail tyres at the front and 150/70 17 on the rear.

Pirelli Goes Dual-Compound with Diablo Rosso II

November’s EICMA International Motorcycle Show in Milan provided Pirelli with a ‘home town’ venue for the introduction of its latest tyre for supersport and naked bikes, the Diablo Rosso II. The Italian manufacturer’s replacement to the first generation Diablo Rosso is described as being an “ideal evolution” of the original tyre that has inherited its predecessor’s sporty identity while emphasising and improving versatility, wet performance and regularity of wear. The Diablo Rosso II, with its strengths as a supersport road tyre, thus joins the trackday-focused Diablo Rosso Corsa in a premium radial product line-up that Pirelli calls ‘Rosso Generation’.

Pirelli Renews BSB Control Tyre Supply Contract

For the past three years Pirelli has served as control tyre supplier to the British Superbike (BSB) and Supersport Championships, providing riders with a range of its Diablo tyres, some 5,500 of which are supplied and fitted over a typical race weekend by a team of 17 tyre technicians. Series organiser MotorSport Vision Ltd has now confirmed that Pirelli will continue in this role after successfully bidding for the supply tender covering the 2011 to 2015 seasons.

Pirelli Triples 9-month 2010 Net Income to 164.1 million euros

Pirelli & C Spa reports that it tripled net income to 164.1 million euros during the first three quarters of 2010 from 50 million euros in the first nine months 2009. At the consolidated level, revenues to 30 September 2010 totalled 3,703.4 million euros, an increase of 18.9 per cent compared with 3,114.7 million euros in the first nine months of 2009.

EBIT to 30 September 2010 including restructuring charges of 12.4 million euros (28.1 million 30 September 2009) was 309.6 million euros, an increase of 69.7 per cent from 182.4 million euros in the same period of 2009. The margin as a percentage of revenues (8.4 per cent) shows a significant improvement from the 5.9 per cent recorded in the first nine months of 2009. In the third quarter, in particular, the operating result (EBIT) including restructuring charges was 116.2 million euros, growing 82.7 per cent from 63.6 million euros in the third quarter of 2009, with the margin as a percentage of revenues rising to 9.1 per cent from 5.8 per cent.

Pirelli Signs European Road Safety Charter

Pirelli Tyre has announced that it has signed the European Road Safety Charter (ERSC), showing its commitment to the reduction of traffic accidents. The Italian manufacturer signed the Charter, promoted by the European Commission, in Rome during the Italian stage of the ERSC’s National Tour. Alessandro D’Este, managing director of Pirelli Tyre Italia and signatory for the Pirelli group, said: “Safety has always been our focus. Pirelli means performance everywhere in the world but there is no performance without suitable levels of safety.

Stapleton’s: TAFF Award is Huge Vote of Confidence

Stapleton’s beat off stiff competition to be named as Tyre Wholesaler of the Year at the NTDA Tyre and Fast Fit Awards 2010, which was held at Manchester’s Hilton Deansgate alongside the Brityrex International exhibition in the Manchester Central conference centre on 6 October 2010. The title tops a positive year for the company, which has seen it acquire previously Pirelli-owned wholesale operation CPK and achieve total sales of over £300 million.

Auto Express Test: Winter Tyres Offer 3x More Grip

As UK tyre suppliers, distributors and fleets show increasing interest in stocking and promoting winter tyres, consumer magazine Auto Express has published a winter tyre test showing that the season-specific products offer three times more grip than standard “summer” products. The winter tyre test, full details of which are published in the latest issue of the magazine (available today – 27 October 2010), saw Auto Express test six current winter tyres (205/55 R16) against all-season and summer tyre control products.

Pirelli and FIA Announce 2011 Star Drivers for WRC

While Pirelli is exiting its World Rally Championship tyre supply deal at the end of this year to plough its motorsport resources into some sort of single-seater track series, its involvement in the 2011 WRC will live on in the six young competitors from around the world that triumphed in the Pirelli Star Driver Global Shoot-Out, which finished Sunday in Salou, Spain. The winning six – cut down from 16 – will become part of the FIA’s young driver programme which will be integrated into the newly-created WRC Academy next year. The six drivers will contest six rounds of the 2011 FIA World Rally Championship in Ford Fiesta R2s.

Volvo Launches UK Winter Tyre Programme

Volvo Car UK has announced the launch of its new Winter Tyre Programme, which offers drivers the opportunity to purchase a set of alloy wheels and Continental or Pirelli winter tyres. For a twice yearly charge, Volvo is also offering storage of the off-season tyres and fitment when it is time for the changeover. Volvo says the scheme is “a response to last January’s heavy snowfall, which saw the coldest temperatures since 1963 and icy conditions that caused misery for millions of motorists”.

Analysts Welcome Pirelli Broadband Sale, Expect Aggressive Capital Investment

Despite affirming that Pirelli’s recent sale of its broadband business confirms the company’s focus is on its tyre operations, some financial analysts have responded by saying Pirelli’s stock sentiment has peaked for the time being. Their thinking is that the company is on the brink of announcing a series of capital expenditure investments. In response to news that Pirelli sold its broadband operations to ADB for 30 million euros, a Morgan Stanley investor’s note said: “We valued the business at 13 million equity value, the sale price is 30 million (the difference is irrelevant for the share price).”
