Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 is Auto Express Best Buy

The annual Auto Express tyre test, published yesterday (8 September, 2011), awarded Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 top place and a “Best Buy 2011” endorsement. Michelin’s Pilot Sport 3 also received a “Recommended” rating, coming in second and scoring very highly all round. The magazine tested ten tyres from top-selling manufacturers, using the popular 225/45R17 size fitted to Volkswagen Golf GTIs. Ten tyres were supplied by each manufacturer, while Auto Express also bought two sets at random, to ensure fair testing. The tests, including wet and dry characteristics, cabin noise and rolling resistance, were completed at Bridgestone’s cutting edge testing facility in Aprilia, Italy.

Pirelli to request F1 waste tyre regulation

Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery has told Autosport.com that the tyre supplier to Formula One will seek a regulation change for 2012 to stop teams from wasting allocated rubber. The manufacturer currently supplies 11 sets of tyres to each driver – split between six harder and five softer compound P Zeros – which is resulting in wasted harder tyres, as teams prefer to run the quicker tyre. The fact that the softer, quicker compound will degenerate more quickly is circumvented by teams running less frequently, especially in qualifying, which has resulted in farcical sessions during which some drivers opt not to compete so as to preserve the softer tyres. The concern of waste tyres for Pirelli operates on both an ecological and an economical level, as the motorsport director explains.

Nizhnekamskneftekhim ramps up butyl rubber production

On August 25 2011 the third rubber so-called “welding” finishing and drying line was officially put into operation at OAO Nizhnekamskneftekhim’s butyl rubber plant. The hairman of the board of directors of OAO Nizhnekamskneftekhim, general director of PSC TAIF A. Shigabutdinov, general director of OAO Nizhnekamskneftekhim V. Busygin and members of the company's board of directors attended the official ceremony.

Pirelli brings soft and medium tyres to home GP

Pirelli has good reason to anticipate this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza more than other events in the calendar; located in parkland just half an hour from the Italian firm’s headquarters to the north of Milan, the track – one of Formula One’s fastest with an average speed in the region of 250kmh – has been integral to the brand’s motorsport history. Pirelli will bring its P Zero White (medium) and P Zero Yellow (soft) tyres to Monza, which the supplier anticipates will provide plenty of scope for the teams to use different tyre strategies.

Pirelli Slatina factory extension to make car tyre plant its biggest

The Prime Minister of Romania, Emil Boc has inaugurated the extension of Pirelli’s tyre factory in Slatina, accompanied by the Italian manufacturer’s chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera, and the Italian ambassador in Bucharest Mario Cospito. The full 160 million euro extension, begun in 2008 and to be concluded in 2013, will increase production capacity from 7 million passenger car units at the end of 2011 to 10 million by the end of the extension project and the extension of its area. Pirelli says the plant is already one of its most modern, and will become its biggest passenger car tyre plant when the extension is complete.

Reifen Müller expands its mould cure retreading operation

Companies wishing to survive as retreaders these days either need to find a profitable niche where few competitors exist and margins are high or they must have the absolute will to follow current market trends and the ability to invest. A factor particularly responsible for changing the market is the growing demand for premium retreads by professionally managed fleets – the new tyre industry is a driver of this change. Therefore small and medium-sized retreading firms must make an effort to retain sufficient business. A real-life example of a company that is thriving despite the market changes is Bavaria, Germany based Reifen Müller.

Vettel overcomes tyre blistering to extend F1 championship lead

Blistering issues in qualifying with Pirelli’s Formula One P Zero tyres in Belgium did not stop Sebastian Vettel from converting his pole position into another Grand Prix victory over the 44 laps of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Pirelli was involved in pre-race discussions with Formula One competitors and administrators after its tyres appeared to degrade as a result of the cars’ set-up for the long, fast straights of Spa. Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery said that the “problem was seemingly a consequence of some cars placing an excessive load on the inner shoulder of the front tyre due to their set-up and so overheating the compound.” He also explained that this overheating “did not at all affect the structural integrity of the tyre,” an opinion borne out by Vettel’s victory, as he appeared to be one of those most affected by tyre blistering.

“Old-style” Spa circuit a driver’s track – Pirelli

Previewing the weekend’s Formula One action, Pirelli has called Belgium’s Spa Francorchamps circuit “an epic track… a true driver’s track. With the longest lap of the season, the track poses plenty of questions for the tyres too: the Eau Rouge corner puts the equivalent of 1,000 kilograms on the front-left tyre and 950 kilograms on the rear tyre; Pouhon is a demanding downhill left-hand corner with 4G of sideways acceleration throughout the bend; the third sector demands full speed for a long period of time, leaving the tyres to cope with a vertical load of 1,100kg from downforce; and during the final part of the lap, the drivers brake hard for the Bus Stop chicane.

Kate Moss to make 3rd appearance in Pirelli Calendar

Although the theme of next year’s Pirelli Calendar is still a closely guarded secret, numerous media sources have let the cat out of the bag on one particular detail – Croydon born supermodel Kate Moss will make an appearance. The 37-year old has previously posed for the tyre maker’s annual publication, showing her assets in the 1994 and 2006 editions. For 2012, Moss returns with skin aplenty, as photos published by Vanity Fair testify. Pirelli has selected Mario Sorrenti as photographer for next year’s calendar.

Spa circuit “exactly in keeping” with Pirelli F1 “tyre philosophy”

With corners such as Eau Rouge and Blanchimont testing drivers and tyres alike, Pirelli says the longest track on the Formula One calendar will pose a range of challenges, especially considering the variable weather that characterises the region – in fact, the length of the circuit means that different microclimates can mean the track is both wet and dry depending on where drivers are. The tyre supplier will take its P Zero White medium and P Zero Yellow soft compounds – like at the Grand Prix of Europe and the German Grand Prix earlier this year – but it is likely the P Zero Blue intermediate tyre will play a key role once again. Pirelli has not tested at Spa-Francorchamps, and the high vertical and lateral loadings on the tyres, mean that the manufacturer will be in for an intriguing weekend. The length of the lap should help differentiate between the two compounds more too, which will enhance the importance of tyre strategy. Pirelli expects wear to be quite low, owing to the cool conditions and flowing nature of the track, with fewer sharp corners than at most other circuits.

ATS Euromaster doubles winter tyre order

ATS Euromaster has doubled its investment in cold weather tyres to more than £6 million for winter 2011/2012, with orders spread across a mix of premium, mid-range and budget brands. As a result the company reports that it will be stocking a range of sizes suitable for most makes of car and van. Last year the company spent around £3 million on winter tyre stocks.

Chris Hufflett, group operations director of ATS Euromaster, told Tyres & Accessories: “Last year the UK had its first real taste of cold weather tyres and they quickly became ‘hot ticket’ items – we could have sold our stock several times over. Long range forecasts for this winter point towards it being the fourth bad winter in succession. If this rings true, it will drive a very strong market for cold weather tyre sales across the board.

Conti unveils ‘most innovative’ North American market 4×4 tyre

Continental Tire the Americas has introduced what it calls its “most innovative SUV, crossover and light truck tyre to date,” the CrossContact LX20. Priorities when developing this all-season tyre were fuel economy and tread wear improvements along with competition-beating wet braking. In respect to this last-mentioned quality, Continental says that in an independent wet braking test the CrossContact LX20 in size 265/70R17 stopped 34 feet shorter than its leading competitor, Pirelli’s Scorpion STR A P265/70R17 113H.

Maxxis snow tyre tops Dutch Government tests

The most recent version of ‘De Nieuwe Band’ (The New Tyre), a list of tyres commissioned by the Dutch Government to highlight winter tyres that are safe, fuel efficient and low noise, found that the Maxxis MA-PW was alone among the 45 tyres tested to already meet forthcoming EU standards for wet grip, rolling resistance co-efficient and rolling sound emission.

Michelin invests in cycle helmet initiative

Staffordshire County Council has teamed up with Stoke-on-Trent City Council and Michelin Tyre Plc as part of the road safety initiative. Between them they have been handing out 10,000 cycle helmets – 7,000 to young people in Staffordshire and 3,000 to children in Stoke-on-Trent.

In addition 80 bikes have also been given away and pupils have been taking part in classroom based sessions and cycling activities to boost their confidence when they are out and about. Michelin is funding after a grant from the European Commission’s Road Safety for Young People in Europe.

Pirelli pledges to buy Italian bonds

Reuters reports that, in a move to alleviate the euro zone crisis Italy faces, Pirelli & C. SpA has signed a newspaper petition offering to buy government bonds. The tyre maker is said to be one of 24 Italian companies that added their names to a petition instigated by the business daily Milano Finanza.
