These suppliers must therefore ensure they are at the cutting edge of service. Pirelli introduces social media Moto competition

Pirelli is offering the chance for followers of its Moto Facebook page to compete in an online “social game” with the top prize of a trip to Los Angeles. The complete content of the brand’s “Ride Like an Angel” contest will become available to users promoting Pirelli’s Moto page within their own social groups and purchasing a set of Pirelli Angel ST tyres in April or May 2012, helping to promote the brand both online and in retail stores. The game involves scoring points by completing four tracks set in Los Angeles districts such as Downtown and Santa Monica.

Pirelli increases Performance Centres by 25%

Pirelli has announced that the number of its UK Performance Centres (PPCs) has increased by 25 per cent over the past two years. Pirelli presented the information at a PPC meeting the headquarters of reigning FIA Formula One Constructors' World Champions Red Bull Racing in Milton Keynes last month. In August 2010, there were 66 PPC branches but this figure has “steadily grown over the past 20 months” to reach 83 in the UK and Ireland. PPCs are audited for quality, helping the manufacturer to direct high performance car drivers to the outlets that will best suit their needs.

Pirelli acquires majority share in Brazilian distributor

Pirelli has signed an agreement to acquire 60 per cent of the company equity in Campneus, one of Brazil’s major tyre distribution networks for approximately 54 million real (£17.1 million), subject to adjustment on the basis of the asset situation on the closing date. The share has been obtained from the Faria da Silva family, who established Campneus in 1975 with assistance from Pirelli’s Brazilian subsidiary. The agreement is subject to approval by CADE, the Conselho Administrativo de Defesa Econômica brasiliano, and finalisation is expected at the end of the first half of 2012.

“Tale of two tyres” in Thruxton BSB round

Pirelli has called the second round of the British Superbike Championship at Thruxton a “tale of two tyres”, as the SC2 harder rear Diablo Superbike tyre compound was fitted to the winning bikes in both races. Ian Lowry took his first ever series win and the Championship lead, as he and race two winner, Josh Brookes both opted for the SC2 to beat series Tommy Hill towards the end of each race. British Champion Hill used the softer SC1 compound rear tyre in both outings.

Rosberg dominant as McLaren’s use Pirelli medium tyre for podium charge

Nico Rosberg has stamped his name on the 2012 Formula One season with a dominant weekend in China, during which Pirelli says the Mercedes driver managed his allocation of the P Zero White medium tyre and P Zero Yellow soft tyre perfectly. With Ross Brawn behind him – as he was for teammate, Michael Schumacher’s seven Championship titles – Rosberg is now firmly marked out as a contender, claiming pole position by half a second, and taking his debut victory over 20 seconds ahead of the pursuing McLarens of Jensen Button and Lewis Hamilton. Both British drivers showed masterful use of pit stops and tyre compounds as Button, Hamilton and Mark Webber all passed defending champion Sebastian Vettel, who used a two-stop strategy, on fresher sets of P Zero White medium tyres.

P Zero Yellow soft tyre 0.6 seconds faster in China

Pirelli has taken its P Zero Yellow soft and P Zero White medium tyres to China for the forthcoming Grand Prix weekend, and it looks likely that the softer tyre will provide drivers with around 0.6 seconds per lap following Friday practice. Mercedes driver, Michael Schumacher used the P Zero Yellow to set the fastest time of the day during the second session, setting a time of 1:35:973 on his first flying lap. Pirelli said this display underlines the rapid warm-up of the soft compound.

Pirelli to hit Thruxton hard in BSB round two

Pirelli is recommending its hardest SC2 compound for riders tackling Thruxton at the second round of the British Superbike Championship. Bad weather meant the opening round at Brands Hatch was dominated by those best equipped to deal with damp conditions, and Pirelli suggests podium finishers, Jon Kirkham, Alistair Seeley and Michael Rutter may just be quietly hoping a repeat. Thruxton will demand different machine set-up’s and strategies for riders and teams, and if the weather stays fine, the Superbike competitors have three slick options on the rear – SC0 (softest), SC1 (medium) and SC2 (hardest) – and the SC1 and SC2 on the front;. Fully wet conditions will see riders opt for Pirelli Diablo Rain and the intermediate Diablo Wet tyres will be available for difficult in-between conditions.

Pirelli recognises suppliers’ excellence

Pirelli has introduced a Suppliers Awards for the first time, aimed at recognising quality, innovation and competitiveness, in addition to improving the company’s partner relationships. Inaugurating the Pirelli Suppliers’ Awards the company nominated its best suppliers of 2011, as chairman and CEO, Marco Tronchetti Provera and chief purchasing officer, Carlo Costa presided over the ceremony held at the company’s Milan headquarters.

Pirelli Diablo Super Biker application available on Android

Pirelli has made its Diablo Super Biker application, launched last August on Apple’s iPhone, can now be used on Android devices. The free app boasts an award received at SMAU 2011 in the Utilities Tools and Productivity category of the Mob App Awards. Pirelli says more than 50,000 bikers have downloaded it.

Russian tyre test offers surprising findings

The latest issue of Russian motoring magazine, Avto-Revyu (No. 6/2012) features a tyre test based on a range of 185/60 R15 products. This size is a mainstay of the Russian market due to strong sales of Volkswagen’s Polo there.

Tyres tested include the Michelin Energy Saver and Energy XM2, Bridgestone Ecopia EP100, Continental ContiEcoContact 5, Goodyear EfficientGrip, Nokian Hakka Green and Pirelli Cinturato representing so-called “green” tyres as well as the Hankook Optimo K415, Kama Euro 236 and Federal Formoza FD1 “normal” tyres.

Brit Superbikes head to Brands Hatch on Pirelli tyres

Pirelli will travel to Brands Hatch over Easter weekend, to provide tyres to the MCE British Superbike Championship. Last year’s series provided some of the closest racing in the world, and the tyre supplier believes there is more to come in the 2012 Superbike, Supersport and Ducati 848 Challenge classes. The new Rapid Solicitors National Junior Cup for riders aged 13-18 riding Kawasaki Ninja 250R machines also joins the portfolio of championships run on Pirelli tyres.

Pirelli announces Bahrain, Spain, Monaco GP compound selections

Pirelli has announced its tyre nominations for the next three rounds (four to six) of this year’s FIA Formula One World Championship in Bahrain, Spain and Monaco. The supplier will take the P Zero Yellow soft tyre to all three events. Accompanying it in Bahrain will be the P Zero White medium; in Spain the manufacturer breaks with its convention of keeping compounds one step apart, supplying the P Zero Silver hard tyre; in Monaco, Pirelli will use its supersoft P Zero Red compound for the first time this season, helping to rubberise the road surfaces used at one of motorsport’s most iconic events, in addition to providing greater grip on the most twisty circuit of the year.

Fisher wins first 2012 round of WRC Academy on Pirelli

Northern Ireland’s Alastair Fisher has won the opening round of the 2012 FIA WRC Academy on Rally Portugal. Academy events are run exclusively on Pirelli rubber, and the Italian manufacturer supplied its K4 gravel tyre to deal with particularly tough conditions; the entire loop of three stages on Friday afternoon was cancelled following several delays in the morning caused by rain and mud. Pirelli’s WRC Academy tyre engineer Matteo Braga said: “The first round of the Academy was certainly filled with action, and conditions that go beyond what we would normally expect from this event. Even though the weather was extreme, the K4 tyres coped extremely well with some of the biggest challenges that they have ever faced.”

Superstock debut for Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC

The newest member of Pirelli’s Diablo motorcycle tyre range – the Supercorsa SC – has hit the track, the Italian tyre maker reports. It says the new tyre took centre stage at the Autodromo Enzo and Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy during the first Superstock 1000 FIM Cup race held on 1 April as part of the World Superbike championship. As of this year, all riders in this race category will use the SC2 compound version of the Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC in sizes 120/70 ZR17 for the front and 200/55 ZR17 for the rear.
