Alguersuari, Di Grassi to test Pirelli F1 tyres

Pirelli has appointed Spain’s Jaime Alguersuari and Brazilian, Lucas di Grassi as its test drivers for the 2012 season. Their joint appointment marks the first time Pirelli will have two permanent Formula One test drivers; di Grassi carried out the role single-handedly last year, and Pirelli says the addition of Alguersuari will give the company broader knowledge of the most current generation of Formula One machinery. The latter driver made seven top-10 finishes in 2011 for the Toro Rosso team, while di Grassi started 18 races for Virgin Racing in 2010.

World Superbike rider takes to off-season tracks on Pirelli

World Superbike rider, Sylvain Guintoli has spent the off-season riding in the UK on his own Ducati 1198SP road bike fitted with treaded Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tyres. The Team Effenbert Liberty Racing rider, who was born in France but now lives in the West Midlands with his British wife, decided to get out on track on his own tyres. Guintoli competed in the British Superbike Championship last year, and the rider decided to return to a cold Snetterton in January, and tackled Mallory and Oulton Park in March.

Tom Cave secures maiden victory on Pirelli-backed BRC

The Dyfi and Dyfnant forests in north Wales hosted the Bulldog International Rally of North Wales, supplied by Pirelli’s K6 gravel tyre, over the weekend, where local driver Tom Cave secured his maiden victory at the wheel of a Citroen DS3 R3T. Pirelli said that its K6 control tyre coped well with the unseasonably warm and dry conditions. In other Pirelli news, the company-backed Star Driver, Jukka Korhonen drove his TEG Sport prepared Skoda Fabia R2 with a “measured approach” that rewarded the Finn with his first points finish; he claimed seventh overall and second in class.

Pirelli enters second year of WRC Academy support

Following an inaugural season it has called “highly successful”, Pirelli will continue to support the FIA World Rally Championship Academy as the 2012 season gets underway at Vodafone Rally de Portugal later this week (29 March – 1 April). Pirelli will again provide its K4 tyre on gravel and its RX5 and RE7 tyre on asphalt to 13 rising stars and their co-drivers. The season will feature three gravel events: Portugal, Greece and Finland, followed by three asphalt events: Germany, France and Spain. Representing 11 countries worldwide, competitors will pilot identical Pirelli-branded Ford Fiesta R2s, each prepared by Cumbria’s M-Sport operation from a facility in Krakow, Poland.

Early Perez tyre change paves way for Sauber F1 podium

A first-lap stop for full wet tyres in the early driving rain of the Malaysian Grand Prix helped Sergio Perez and Bruno Senna to secure career-best positions, and valuable points for the Sauber and Williams teams, as Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso momentarily silenced the team’s critics with an important victory. Perez showed excellent pace on Pirelli’s hardest P Zero Silver compound, and could have challenged Alonso, who was around 1.5 seconds per lap slower on the medium compound P Zero White tyre than the 21-year old Mexican in the closing stages, but a mistake when in site of Alonso meant he had to follow his team’s instructions and play safe for second place.

Yokohama launches inflation pressure calculator in the US

Yokohama Tire Corporation has launched an online-based resource tool that helps fleet owners effectively manage the costs and pressures of their tyres. The Yokohama Inflation Pressure Calculator recommends appropriate inflation levels, thus preventing under-inflation or over-inflation that are often the culprit behind the most common tyre wear, tyre damage and excess fuel consumption.

Reduced compound differences yield strategic variety in Aus opener

Pirelli has consistently said the aim of its 2012 specification tyre compounds would be to create increased variety in Formula One teams’ race strategies. The Italian supplier of the championship has proposed to do this by reducing the gaps in performance between its available compounds, and in the season opening Australian Grand Prix the new versions of the P Zero Yellow soft and P Zero White medium created a difference of around half a second per lap.

Pirelli rear F1 tyre design reacts to new aerodynamic regulations

Pirelli will enter its second season of Formula One as exclusive tyre supplier this weekend at the Australian Grand Prix; previewing the race, the tyre manufacturer has outlined another of the ways its tyres have changed since last season, responding to new aerodynamic and technical regulations, which have had a profound impact on car design. The banishment of blown diffusers – with the exhaust outlets now having to exit the car higher, pushing the centre of pressure forwards – have resulted in reduced grip at the rear, meaning that Pirelli has had to rise to the challenge of increasing the grip given by its rear tyres.

Analysts: Pirelli target upgrade a big surprise

While pleased that Pirelli’s figures were “in line” with expectations, financial analysts have reported their surprise at the Italian-based tyre manufacturers’ decision to raise its targets for 2012. According to advice sent out by Morgan Stanley the upgrade news is “a big surprise so soon after the investor day in the fourth quarter.” They expect target upgrade in the region of 8 to 10 per cent and immediately issued the succinct advice “buy”.

Pirelli sales up 16.6% in 2011, profits beat target margin

Pirelli & C. SpA’s has released fourth quarter and full year 2011 results showing consolidated revenues in 2011 totalled 5,654.8 million euro, an increase of 16.6 per cent from 4,848.4 million euros in 2010. Consolidated operating income after restructuring charges was 581.9 million euros compared with 407.8 million euros in 2010, and with a 10.3 per cent margin compared with the target of “around 10 per cent” announced last November. This is almost two percentage points higher than the 8.4 per cent achieved in 2010.

Analysts: Fourth quarter results key for Pirelli 2012 outlook

When Pirelli releases its fourth quarter financials on Monday, the results are likely to be a barometer of what can be expected from the company in the rest of 2012. That’s the view of financial analysts from Morgan Stanley that published their view in an investors note dated 8 March.

Their prediction is that Pirelli will report figures on the positive side of being in line with expectations: “We believe Pirelli will deliver 139 million euros of reported EBIT, a touch higher than the street and Pirelli’s targets.

Pirelli announces 2010 Renault as F1 test car

Pirelli has finally acquired its own Formula One test car, though the supplier is still yet to announce who will be driving it. The car in question is Renault’s 2010 R30, which Pirelli will adapt to simulate the latest technical and aerodynamic regulations, as it develops future tyres. Pirelli states that a test driver will be appointed later in March.

New Nissan Invitation model to create 2,000 UK jobs

Nissan’s decision to produce its new Invitation model at its Sunderland, UK plant is likely to create 2000 jobs at the company and its suppliers. Production of the Invitation, which is a project totalling around £125 million, is due to start in 2013. Nissan says it will produce 100,000 of the cars a year when manufacturing gets underway.

Hembery explains Pirelli’s unmarked F1 tyres

The internet was rife with theories about why some of Pirelli’s Formula One tyres at the Circuit de Catalunya appeared without the usual colour-coded sidewall markings. The favourite was that at the final test before the first Grand Prix in Australia teams would be keen to keep their testing programmes and therefore potential tyre strategies from other teams. The real reason was much less clandestine – Pirelli’s Motorsport manager, Paul Hembery explained to French magazine, Auto Plus that the tyres had been manufactured at a site other than its usual F1 manufacturing plant in Izmit. The tyres were provided as prototypes to test Pirelli’s ability to provide current F1 rubber if Turkey’s output was compromised by natural disaster.

Cambrian launches latest price catalogue

The UK’s largest motorcycle and scooter tyre wholesaler, Cambrian Tyres, has just released its 2012 price catalogue – a whopping 192 page tome that list the full ranges available from Avon, Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, Metzeler, Michelin and Pirelli, as well as a full selection of inner tubes and accessories. Completely re-written for 2012, the price list also features an enlarged fitment guide to aid dealers in selecting the correct size tyres for almost 2,500 different motorcycles.
