ATS-E implements breakdown halving Pirelli policy for Yorkshire firm

West Yorkshire’s Bedfords Transport says it has been able to halve tyre-related breakdowns since adopting a new tyre policy with ATS Euromaster in December 2011. The company signed a new deal with its existing tyre service provider to fit Pirelli new and remould tyres across its fleet of 84 trucks and 135 trailers. During the first seven months of the contract, Bedfords Transport has recorded an average of 3.4 roadside tyre failures per month, compared to 6.4 per month during the previous year. The company credits a “closer working relationship” with ATS-E for the significant impact on operational uptime the new deal has made.

Perissinotto resigns from Pirelli board

Pirelli & C. SpA has reported the resignation of Giovanni Perissinotto from the company’s Board of Directors. In making this announcement, Pirelli thanked Perissinotto, who had served on the board since May 2003, for his “valued contribution to the company.”

Pirelli’s Carlisle tyre plant is going 100% premium

Following the news that Pirelli is to receive funding from the UK government’s regional growth fund, Tyres & Accessories visited Pirelli’s Carlisle tyre manufacturing plant and met with industrial director, Paulo Batistini and engineering manager, Alan Wilson in order to find what this and other recent investments mean in practice.

While no official figures have been released, based on the fact that £950 million of government money is being supplied to 119 British business on the proviso that taxpayer funding is matched 5:1 with private investment it is a fair guess to assume that Pirelli is pushing millions towards the development of the latest generation of eco-tyres in Carlisle. And this fits with the company’s wider strategy. Pirelli’s latest industrial plan, published in November 2011, has the stated aim of leading what it defines as the premium market by 2015. With this in mind, the recent developments which centre on transitioning the plant towards to almost exclusively high performance output (and therefore high value products) are to be expected.

Analysts on Pirelli results: ‘No warning in sight’

While seeking to allay fears that Pirelli will miss its targets when the Italian-based tyre manufacturer releases its second quarter figures on Thursday, financial analysts have suggested that Pirelli shares are overweight and that a price correction is “overdue.”

Zafco, Pirelli sign Armstrong brand licensing agreement

Pirelli Tyre SpA and Zafco have signed an agreement that will allow Zafco to use the previously mothballed Armstrong brand under license for five years. The UAE-based company has an understanding with Pirelli that it can acquire the brand from Pirelli within the five years of the licensing agreement, which was signed on 23 April, 2012. Asif Yusufzai, member of Zafco’s board of directors, described the deal as marking a momentous occasion for both Zafco and the Armstrong brand. Zafco said that Armstrong tyres will be manufactured at reputable factories commensurate with its internationally recognised high quality.

Alonso achieving Pirelli tyre consistency in third win

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso controlled the race from pole to win at Hockenheim’s German Grand Prix, securing a third victory this year, and beginning to suggest that he is the man most ready to tame the unpredictability of Formula One. Since the season began, seven different drivers have finished first; with half of the 20 scheduled Grands Prix completed, Alonso leads the only other multiple race winner, Red Bull’s Mark Webber, by 34 points – more than a race victory. Webber, victorious two weeks previously at the British Grand Prix, “just found himself slightly out of that sweet spot with these tyres” according to Red Bull boss Christian Horner. The team principal also suggested that the reduced time for dry running in practice had impeded Webber’s Hockenheim preparations. The Australian was 47 seconds off Alonso’s pace, finishing eighth.

Pirelli doubling ‘speed of evolution’

In an interview with Institutional Investor magazine, which covered topics ranging from BRIC region outlook to the euro crisis, Pirelli CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera shared that the number of new products the tyre maker intends to introduce in the next few years will represent a doubling of its recent programme.

New Pirelli F1 hard tyre debuts at Hockenheim

The introduction of Pirelli’s new P Zero Silver hard compound tyre, postponed last week after sodden practice sessions at Silverstone put paid to its planned debut, was finally completed today in between showers at Hockenheim’s German Grand Prix practice. Dry running in the morning allowed Formula One’s teams to gather very limited information about the experimental hard compound tyre, which was tested in free practice along with the usual allocation of 11 slick tyres for the weekend. A total of 34 sets of the new compound were used, including a longest run of 12 laps on Jean-Éric Vergne’s Toro Rosso.

FIA boss allegedly a F1 ’Michelin man’

Pirelli’s current Formula One tyre supply agreement expires at the end of 2013, and while the Italian manufacturer would gladly sign up for a further three years a new supplier is not out of the question. And there is at least one senior individual within the sport who would gladly see former supplier Michelin make a comeback.

2013 a new direction for Pirelli Calendar?

In 2002, Pirelli entered uncharted territory with its famed Calendar, extracting all traces of naked flesh from its pages. Titled “Beyond Nudity”, the 2002 Calendar replaced glamour models with up and coming – and clothed – actresses. This decision to cover up doesn’t appear to have been a popular one, as bare skin returned the following year and has been a dominant feature of recent editions of the ‘Cal’. Next year may well be different, however.

Tyre war would bring ‘better tyres’ – Schumacher

Michael Schumacher has been one of the more vocal critics of Pirelli’s Formula One tyres this season, having described them in early May as akin to “driving on raw eggs.” During yesterday’s FOTA (Formula One Teams' Association) fans’ forum in Germany, Schumacher seized an opportunity to take another swipe at the Italian tyre maker.

BSB’s second 2012 visit to Brands Hatch this weekend

The British Superbike series visits the Brands Hatch GP circuit this weekend, supported by Pirelli’s Diablo Superbike tyres. Series leader Tommy Hill returns from Oulton Park, where he won all three races, and a Japanese test for the legendary Suzuka Eight Hour endurance race. At last season’s Brands Hatch GP run, Hill was joined on the podium by Shane Byrne and Josh Brookes, and these are the three riders leading the BSB Championship this year, with a comfortable gap between them and fourth placed Michael Laverty. This seventh round is the second visit to the wooded Kent circuit but the first to the full GP format.

Pirelli hints at new hard tyre performance, testing at Hockenheim

While Pirelli will bring its P Zero White medium compound and P Zero Yellow soft compounds to the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim on 20-22 July, much of the Formula One teams’ focus on the first practice day will be on the new specification P Zero Silver hard tyre that will make its debut following a washed-out session at Silverstone. Teams will have two sets of the new tyre on top of their usual allocation of 11 sets of the race’s nominated tyres. Pirelli’s test driver Lucas di Grassi anticipates that the tyre will offers “even better traction, particularly if temperatures are at the lower end of the scale.” The company’s motorsport director Paul Hembery said the tyre has been evolved from the current hard tyre to provide a “slightly wider” range of operating temperatures.

Pirelli granted approval to build Indonesian factory

According to the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board, or BKPM, Pirelli intends to invest US$126 million in a new tyre factory within the company. Reuters reports Chatib Basri, who was appointed chairman of the Board in June, as saying “we gave approval a few days ago for Pirelli to invest in Indonesia. They want to build a tyre factory."
