Safer, more comfortable, better performance. These three qualities are what Pirelli says motorists can now expect from its Scorpion range of SUV tyres following the range’s recent revamp, which the tyre maker undertook in response to forecasted global growth in SUV sales over the next few years.
Pirelli may not have invented the run-flat tyre – these have been around in various forms since the 1930s – but it is now 20 years since the Italian manufacturer brought its first run-flats to market. The road tyres that Pirelli launched in 2001 drew upon lessons learned from rallying, the setting where the tyre maker tried and tested this technology for the first time. Driving on tyres containing a reinforced structure enabled rally cars to keep moving in the event of a puncture, saving precious minutes during intense competition.
Pirelli tyres tuned for electric vehicles are signified by the manufacturer’s ‘Elect’ branding, joining a range of other innovations increasingly demanded by car manufacturers and drivers. Elect tyres primarily offer low rolling resistance to maximise electric vehicles’ range, but they are also low-noise models to emphasise the quiet inside the cabin. With the engine no longer the primary source of noise, combatting sound frequencies produced by tyres is vital to capitalise on a key advantage of the new wave of electric cars, Pirelli states.
Pirelli is currently trialling the latest tyre in its Carrier range of van tyres with certain UK fleets – and with its all-season performance characteristics, the fitment could be a good solution to keeping UK fleets on the road in the country’s inclement winter weather without the need for the downtime of a tyre change. The Carrier All Season is designed to work equally well throughout the year, and also benefits from Pirelli’s Seal Inside technology, further extending valuable mobility.
