RMI accuses Treasury of "spin over fuel prices"

"Treasury officials are trying to spin their way out of the current debate over fuel duty by suggesting that they are giving £4 billion back to the motorist by deferring previous duty increases," said Brian Madderson, RMI Petrol Chairman.

On the 24 February The Financial Times stated that 'faced with a virulent media campaign and public protests at Westminster this month in favour of fuel duty cuts, the chancellor’s aides say he has provided more than £4bn to help motorists and cannot afford anymore.'

Tyresafe: High fuel prices needn’t pressurise motorists

With fuel prices reaching record levels, TyreSafe has reminded motorists about the fuel efficiency benefits of correct tyre pressure as well as providing maximum safety and prolonging tyre life.

While beleaguered UK motorists are now paying as much as 144.67p per litre for diesel on average, TyreSafe points out that apart from improved safety and the reduced risk of experiencing a dangerous blowout, correctly inflated tyres provide lower running costs.

High diesel prices are crippling hauliers says RHA

The Road Haulage Association's latest weekly fuel price survey – the most reliable guide to what hauliers actually pay for diesel deliveries to their depots – shows a national average price of 116.33 pence before VAT (139.60 after VAT).

Diesel price hits record high

Bad news for hauliers, as the price of diesel has hit a record high having rocketed by 10 pence per litre (ppl) in just 12 months – an inflation-busting 7 per cent rise – reports RMI Petrol.

The increase leaves diesel at 143.05 pence per litre (ppl), a level that could derail Government plans to curb inflation, is a disaster for motorists, and puts the livelihoods of hundreds of fuel retailers at further risk says RMI Petrol Chairman Brian Madderson.

Petrol sales plummet 1 billion less barrels sold in 2011

Petrol sales fell significantly during the first three quarters of 2011, according to research conducted by motoring association the AA. And this was no drip drip. On the contrary the AA figures suggest that motorists bought 2.4 billion fewer litres of petrol than the same period in 2008. Total sales of 13.9 billion litres in the first nine months of 2011, a billion litres less than the year before. And drivers are resolved to cut back further during 2012. With petrol prices being a key indicator of miles driven in the UK, the figures have the potential to impact the amount of tyres purchased (sell out) in the tyre market.

More fuel prices gloom

Bad news for hauliers and logistics companies from RMI Petrol, as their fuel price monitoring system, BIG OIL, has seen the steepest and fastest ever rise in wholesale costs over the festive period. From Monday 19 December to Thursday 5 January the cost of diesel increased by nearly 4.50ppl and unleaded petrol by as much as 5.00ppl with 20 per cent VAT to be added.

According to Continental, an estimated 2.8 million electric vehicles will be registered worldwide and on the road by 2020. To cater to this currently small yet fast-growing market, the tyre maker has introduced the Conti.eContact, a new range featuring dimensions specifically aimed at electric vehicles.

RMI Petrol backs fuel duty freeze, highlights demand drops

The Retail Motor Industry Federation’s RMI Petrol department has welcomed chancellor George Osborne’s decision not to increase fuel duty in January. “RMI Petrol believe the chancellor has made the right decision to cancel the fuel duty increase planned for 1 January 2012” Brian Madderson, RMI Petrol chairman.

The association reports that the increase would have raised prices at the pump by 4.00 pence per litre (ppl) within days. Based on current average UK pricing this would have pushed diesel to a new record high at over 145ppl and this grade is steadily gaining market share at the expense of petrol.

Scrapping fuel duty increase good news for motorists – Bridgestone

Following the announcement of the government’s Autumn budget statement, which included the news that the planned 3p rise in fuel duty in January is to be cancelled, Bridgestone has been the first to publically respond to what this means for motorists. In addition to the fuel duty increase cancellation, there will a 1 per cent cap on public sector pay rises for two years after the end of current freeze next year. Borrowing is £112 billion more over the next four years than previous forecasts, but debt interest payments are £22 billion less than expected.

Bosch demos old, new power train tech at RAC Challenge

Bosch has demonstrated some of its oldest and newest automotive technology at the RAC Future Car Challenge and London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. On Saturday 5 November, Bosch showcased its latest split-axle hybrid technology in the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, which took part in the 60-mile RAC Future Car Challenge, driven by Rory Reid from CNET; on the next day Peter Fouquet, president of Robert Bosch UK, took part in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run in a 1904 Mercedes-Simplex touring car, which uses a Bosch magneto and spark plug.

Survey: Small car, van and truck fleets as smart as larger fleets when it comes to fuel

Fleets with fewer than 25 cars, vans and trucks apply almost as much control to buying petrol and diesel as those with more than 25 vehicles, according to new research by MIB Data Solutions. The company asked 3003 companies with fewer than 25 vehicles and 616 with more than 25 how they acquired fuel (The results do not total 100 per cent because some use more than one method of purchasing).

Nick Boddington, managing director, said: “The results of this survey are quite surprising. Certainly, we expected a much greater disparity between small and large fleets when it comes to the amount of control they apply to fuel buying but the figures for all the methods of purchasing we investigated are very similar.

Bosch batteries and chargers

Bosch reports that members of its battery range landed both ‘Best Buy’ and ‘Recommended’ accolades in this year’s Car Mechanics magazine awards. The tests used to determine the best product in each category looked at usability, durability, capacity and cranking. The Bosch S5 Silver Plus, which features 610 cranking Amps, a 63AH capacity and a five-year warranty, was determined the ‘Best Buy’ – with the maximum score of 20/20, while the – Bosch S4 Silver, with 540 cranking Amps and 60AH capacity, received a ‘Recommended’ accolade.

Bridgestone says lawsuit against employee’s “appalling” action is “without merit”

US publication Tire Review says Bridgestone Americas has referred to the actions of one of its former employees, which resulted in a homeless man suffering significant injuries, as “appalling and senseless. The 64-year-old homeless man, Ruben Sandoval, suffered third-degree burns on his arms and face on January 2, 2010, when a service technician working at a Firestone Complete Auto Care store in California tried to scare the man away by dousing his shopping trolley with petrol and setting it on fire.

Chief Fire Officers Association joins TyreSafe

TyreSafe has announced that the UK’s Chief Fire Officers Association has become the newest member of TyreSafe. CFOA’s National Fire and Road Safety Day takes place on Friday, 22 July where tyre safety will be heavily promoted. The nationwide event has two key messages: the dangers of driving too fast and also keeping a safe distance behind the vehicle in front. TyreSafe says tyres have an important role to play in both these areas. Fire Service staff will be found at motorway service stations, larger petrol stations, city centre locations and retail parks across the country throughout the day, distributing TyreSafe leaflets and provide advice to drivers.
