A fire at Vredestein’s raw materials warehouse at Enschede on Friday 22nd August was quickly brought under control by local fire brigades and the company fire brigade and personnel. As a result both the Vredestein production shop and the warehouse were saved and deliveries will not be affected.
Fit4Fleet, the GM-backed network of independent tyre dealers supporting company car fleets, has extended operations to provide coverage in the Republic of Ireland as part of plans to provide customers with extensive coverage throughout the British Isles.
Managing director, Dominic Bateson, believes that the move will also bring a great improvement in the service standards enjoyed by fleet drivers in the country, saying: “Most of the tyre chains that have traditionally serviced fleet drivers are concentrated around the main conurbations, such as Dublin, Cork and Waterford. But what use is that to drivers having a tyre problem out on the road, many miles away from one of those cities? Their needs have to be catered for also. To us, this was an obvious gap in coverage and one of our core objectives has been to establish a comprehensive spread of centres throughout the Republic, so that when a driver has a problem, assistance can be provided promptly.”
Fit4Fleet already has 60 centres in the Republic, with at least one in each of the country’s 26 counties, and personnel at each centre have undergone training to ensure that they are fully able to meet the standards required. This means that the network now numbers more than 900 depots in the UK and the Irish Republic.
Nokian has purchased the Eurobandag retreading plant, situated in St. Petersburg, Russia. Last year, net sales at the plant totalled 0.5 million Euros and the factory retreaded 2,000 truck tyres. Nokian is also re-arranging its retreading materials operations, bringing together the personnel employed at its Vianor retreading plants in Finland, Sweden and Norway under one profit centre.
Interviews with Kwik-Fit personnel have been thin on the ground for the past couple of years or so, and even fewer since the CVC purchase. One exception was T&A’s interview with Mike Wise focussing on the car fleet tyre sector in our April issue. Calls to Tim Parker and Trevor Chinn’s offices were well parried by apparently impervious PA’s.
Goodyear has announced that Samir Gibara (64) will resign as chairman at the end of June. He will be succeeded by Robert Keegan (55), who is currently president and CEO and who will retain responsibility for these two roles. Gibara joined Goodyear in 1964 and has been chairman since July 1996. He paid tribute to the speed with which Keegan “learned the industry and demonstrated his leadership abilities”. For his part, Keegan said that Gibara had provided “important and valued counsel” since Keegan joined Goodyear in October 2000 as president and COO.
Although turnover decreased by 0.8 per cent in 2002, compared with previous year, the Michelin group outperformed even analysts highest expectations with an operating income of 1.225 billion Euros (which is 7.8 per cent of turnover, and 18 per cent more than 2001). Net profit more than doubled to 614 million Euros. At the same time, management succeeded in reducing the debt mountain by more than one billion Euros – all within one year. Consequently, Michelin continues to be the best-earning tyre company worldwide.
Michelin’s Dundee plant is to manufacture the new Michelin Energy 3 tyre being launched this week. This is good news for the workers at the Baldovie plant. The future of the plant had recently been the subject of speculation as Michelin moved production to cheaper labour cost centres in Eastern Europe. However the announcement of the selection of Dundee to manufacture the new tyre brings a boost in confidence. Plant manager, Trish Bailey said, ” This is a very positive signal for the Dundee factory going into the future. The new tyre is at the very heart of the Michelin range and we are going to play a very important role at the centre of its production. This will contribute to job security for the workers in Dundee.”
In a series of staff changes at Alcoa, William F. Christopher, 48, has been named executive vice president, Alcoa and Group President for Alcoa Aerospace, Automotive and Commercial Transportation. He has been responsible for aerospace and commercial transportation since September and now adds Alcoa’s global automotive market to his remit. This group includes Howmet Castings, Alcoa Fastening Systems, Alcoa Wheel and Forged Products, AFL Automotive, Alcoa Cast Wheels and Alcoa Automotive businesses.
The Supervisory Board of Continental AG (Hanover) has appointed Martien de Louw (56) to the company’s Executive Board, with responsibility for the Passenger Tire division. Board chairman Manfred Wennemer (55) previously oversaw the division in addition to his other duties. De Louw will take up his new assignment on February 1, 2003.
Hundreds of homeowners were warned to remain indoors and keep their doors and windows shut after clouds of black smoke from a blaze at a scrap tyre depot in Levenshulme, Manchester swept across the area.Thirty military personnel and five Green Goddess tenders were sent to tackle the blaze at the tyre depot in, Levenshulme, late last night, and they were still dealing with the incident more than twelve hours later. Loudspeaker warnings for people in Levenshulme and Gorton to remain inside and keep doors and windows closed, to keep out fumes from the burning rubber, were relayed by the Greater Manchester Police helicopter. And motorists were being urged to avoid the area completely. A further four Green Goddesses were despatched to another blaze in nearby Stockport to tackle a tyre dump fire.
Henry Johnson, who was VP Goodyear Eastern Europe and then VP Goodyear Dunlop/Europe, has now been appointed Managing Director of the SBU (Sales Business Unit) Truck Tyres Europe. His successor is Arthur de Bok, who was previously with Procter and Gamble.
Trials, tribulations and shady deals have, in recent years, been the order of the day in the contacts between the Corporation’s management in Hanover and the Semperit GmbH subsidiary in Vienna. On the one hand, due mostly to the fighting spirit of a large part of the personnel, we had the image of a totally unruly company in Traiskirchen, and on the other hand the image of those at the top of the Corporation; not to be trusted any further than they could be thrown. Like the devil fears holy water, the Austrian associates fear the physicist Hubertus von Grünberg who, first as the Continental Corporation’s CEO and now as a sort of Supervisory Superintendent, is spending a lot of time making life impossible for the plant in Traiskirchen. As far as the Austrians are concerned, there can be no possible justification for these measures, and closure of the plant would be seen as a token of utter ingratitude, because Semperit Traiskirchen has amply rewarded the Corporation with returns on their previous investments. The question today is: can Traiskirchen be saved? The company offers employment to 1,500 associates, manufacturing products for a world market under pressure due to overcapacity. The bitter truth is this: the plant is no longer needed, however, the brand is, and so is the market. What they have not quite figured out yet, is how to lose the one and keep the others. Employees point to the closure, at the beginning of the eighties, of the Firestone Plant in Pratteln, Switzerland, which consequently reduced the then market leader to a mere “also ran”. The same fate will befall the Continental Corporation, is the suggestion in Vienna. But the reality may be quite different. At that time, Firestone had withdrawn from the market in the heat of its struggle for survival, tyres had to be ordered by the container load from the Spanish or French plant, the infrastructure had gone, and so had the distribution service. If lights go out in Traiskirchen today, the impact on the market may be close to zero. Austria will be in turmoil but once the telephones of the works council members have been cut, the interest of the public and the press will die down, and so will the interest of the politicians, who are trying to capitalise on the situation, pretending they are fighting to keep the jobs. It will be like in any obituary: fought, hoped and lost. Matters should be approached from a different angle: ranting and raving does not create new jobs.
Goodyear announced that it will contribute in excess of 1M US Dollars (1,081,775 Euro) to be divided between the New York Times 9/11 Neediest Fund providing aid to rescue workers, civilians and their families and the American Red Cross. The fund will probably exceed this figure as contributions are added by Goodyear employees. The company has also dedicated personnel to ensure the constant supply of tyres to sites in Washington and New York, and has dispatched tyre engineers to assist New York City’s tyre maintenance staff to avoid equipment downtime.
In reply to an article in NEUE REIFENZEITUNG entitled “Bremsspuren im Odenwald” (“Pirelli Shows Brake Lights in Germany”) Dr. Wentz assured the “Darmstädter Echo” in an interview that the company was about to conclude an extraordinarily good 1999 business year and that there would be no personnel cuts. The correct version is: In the year 2000, Pirelli Germany (by which we mean Pirelli AG, Metzeler, Drahtcord and Pirelli Reifenwerke) will not be sacking 140 white collar workers, as previously reported, but only 45. On the other hand, Pirelli says it is going to employ 48 more blue-collar workers. These are the official figures from the office of Dr. Wentz, which we have no cause to doubt. Having said that, the numbers do not correspond with information that we have from other sources and they apply only to the year 2000. In October 1999, Pirelli chief Tronchetti Provera explained, against the background of falling profits, the need to reduce staff numbers in the Tyre Division by 800 in the year 1999.
Robert J. Keegan (53), one time top manager with Kodak, assumed the position as Goodyears‘s president and chief operating officer in Akron on 1st of October, making him the deputy and named successor of chairman Sam Gibara (61). According to group publications, Keegan will be responsible for day to day business, whereas Gibara will be more concerned with strategy.
