Charity to Head Conti Americas Passenger & Light Truck Dealer Sales

During these tough times for the commercial vehicle tyre market, Continental Tire the Americas has turned to charity for help – Chris Charity, that is. The former Continental Tire Automotive Aftermarket national sales manager is taking on the role of national sales manager for the Passenger and Light Truck Tire Division’s Dealer Channel, a role in which he will be responsible for directing, managing, training and supervising the dealer field sales force. Charity will also manage and oversee the development of new business and the growth of existing accounts within the US. Charity replaces Tom Colelli who is retiring after 43 years of service with Continental Tire.

Bridgestone Americas Chief Emkes Announces Retirement

On February 12 Bridgestone Americas, Inc. (BSAM) announced the upcoming retirement of Mark A. Emkes, the company’s chairman, CEO and president, effective February 28, 2010. On that date Emkes, who has been employed at the Bridgestone family of families for more than 33 years, will also retire from his position as a member of the Boards of Directors of BSAM and parent company Bridgestone Corporation.

New National Sales Manager at Exide

Exide has appointed a new national sales manager. Effective February 8, this position rests in the hands of Heath Ghent, who, according to the battery supplier, brings with him a wealth of experience. Ghent’s previous roles include senior sales and marketing positions in a variety of companies, including Aggreko Ltd and Air Products PLC, servicing customers in a wide cross section of market sectors.

Snap-On Reports Record UK Sales for 2009

Snap-on Tools, reportedly the UK brand leader in tools, tool storage and aftermarket workshop equipment, is celebrating its 45th anniversary by reporting the record sales it achieved in 2009. According to the company, Snap-on Tools’ sales exceeded £100 million for the first time, the third consecutive year of record sales levels. Sales are said to have grown in every product group – tool boxes, hand tools, power tools and hand-held diagnostic equipment.

Enrique Guix Joins Pelmar as Area Sales Director

Pelmar Engineering Ltd. has appointed Enrique Guix as area sales director for the Scandinavia, Spain, Portugal and South American markets. Guix worked for rubber machinery firm Gumix, S.A. in Barcelona, Spain for more than 17 years before Farrel Corp. acquired selected assets from Gumix, S.A. in 2006 in order to establish Farrel Spain, S.L., where Guix worked until the end of 2009.

Goodyear Goes Outside to Get NAT President

Curt Andersson has been named president of Goodyear’s North American Tire unit, a position that has been “open” since current NAT president Rich Kramer was promoted to COO of the global company last year. Andersson, 48, comes to Goodyear from Crouse-Hinds of Syracuse, New York, were he served as president of the Cooper Industries unit. Prior to Crouse-Hinds, Andersson was senior vice president of industrial integration for The Timken Co. in Canton, Ohio, and held management posts with General Electric.

Alcoa Appoints New Wheel and Transportation COO

As part of the restructuring of its Engineered Products and Solutions (EPS) business, a measure taken in order to accelerate growth, Alcoa has appointed Olivier M. Jarrault to the new position of chief operating officer, Engineered Products and Building Systems. In this role, Jarrault, who has served as president of Alcoa Fastening Systems since 2002, will lead the Alcoa Fastening Systems, Alcoa Wheels and Transportation Products, and Building and Construction Systems business units.

Conti Appoints New Communications Senior VP

As of February 15 the role of senior vice president at Continental Corporation’s Corporate Communications department will be handled by Dr. Felix Gress. The 49-year old comes to Conti from Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar GmbH, where he served as managing director, and succeeds Dr. Heimo Prokop, who left Continental on December 31, 2009. In his new position, Gress will report directly to Conti Executive Board chairman Dr. Elmar Degenhart.

NETE Driver "Student of the Year"

Sixty drivers for North Eastern Tyre and Exhausts (NETE) are celebrating achieving top marks in an accredited qualification. As part of its commitment to staff development, senior management at NETE invited the group to complete an NVQ Level 2 in Delivery and Carrying Goods. And, with a 100 per cent pass rate, every one of the 60 drivers who took part in the course, has good reason to celebrate – but perhaps none more so than Steve Martin, who, at an award ceremony recognising the achievements of Gateshead College students completing NVQs, was awarded Student of the Year in his category.

UK Tyre Recovery Sector Fights Illegal Operations, Slim Margins

After experiencing more than a year of general economic recession, the UK tyre recovery sector enters 2010 functioning at roughly full capacity, with around 500,000 tonnes of tyres being collected last year. This puts tonnages on a par with the latest complete data compiled by the Used Tyre Working Group in 2008. However, while the UK has managed to limp out of recession with tyre recovery tonnages generally intact, there are signs that the same market pressures that have put the squeeze on new tyre profit margins are putting pressures on the collection part of the tyre life cycle too; and that regulation-dodging is still a problem.

So, while its good that tonnages in 2009 were relatively stable, the bad news is that illegal tyre collection and disposal activities are rife. What’s worse is that they complexity of such schemes has developed to the point that the disruption caused by rogue “white van man” collectors is now at the bottom end of a wide spectrum. This means large scale scam disposal rings and – in some cases – even franchise operations that are in operation taking money from tyre dealers, but not properly fulfilling their duty of care obligations.

Momentive Takes Over Conti R&D Facility

The purchase of a number of assets and sublease of laboratory space from Continental Tire North America has enabled Momentive Performance Materials USA to set up a 2,000 square metre tyre research and development laboratory. The Charlotte, North Carolina site is said to offer state-of-the-art capabilities and will help Momentive provide faster innovation for customers in the tyre and rubber industry while helping the company reduce new product development cycle times. Momentive has also employed five ex-Conti R&D personnel to work at the facility.

Conti Overhauls German Market Management Structure

Continental is setting up a management structure in its home market with a stronger gearing towards customer and regional demands. The company says its Continental Reifen Deutschland GmbH operation will “step up its exploitation of the experience gained in the passenger tyre industry and trade business, with the aim of more fully satisfying the needs of business partners.” Several new key appointments will facilitate the company’s plans in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the three lands serviced by Continental Reifen Deutschland.

Byun Appointed Kumho Tire Europe President & Managing Director

Yuong Nam Byun is to be appointed the new president and managing director of Kumho Tire Europe GmbH. Byun, who studied business administration at Ohio State University in the US, has held various positions at Kumho. Most recently he was managing director, sales for Central and South America, and in this capacity also was responsible for the most important emerging markets worldwide.

Eurotire Appointments Expand Global Organization

New York-based Eurotire Inc. has today announced the addition of three new personnel members to its global organization, reporting to senior management at its New York headquarters. Kent B. Henschen has joined Eurotire as vice president of marketing and corporate communications. Henschen’s responsibilities with Eurotire include: corporate vision and market and product strategies; global corporate brand; supporting senior management with corporate policy and strategic marketing and communications guidance.

Alliance Appoints Former Goodyear Exec

Alliance Tire Group has appointed Manuel Pintado as president of Alliance Tire Europe BV. Pintado, who joins Alliance after previously heading industrial, farm and OTR tyre initiatives for Goodyear’s Europe Middle East and Africa region. Prior to this, Pintado held management positions in the Earthmover tyre segment across Europe and Latin America.

"With the commissioning of our India facility and the acquisition of the Galaxy and Primex brands during 2009, the Alliance Tire Group is well positioned to emerge as a leader in the Global Off-Highway tyre industry; Manuel's appointment is another important step in this direction and we are sure the Group will benefit immensely from his leadership in Europe, which has been historically the most important market for the Group " said Yogesh Mahansaria, CEO of the Alliance Tire Group, welcoming him to the company.
