Bandvulc adds to fleet support and sales teams

Paul Searle has recently moved into Bandvulc’s sales team to take on the role of account manager. Paul joined Bandvulc in 2003, firstly in Bandvulc Tyre Contracts (BTC) and then the company’s sales operations team. According to the company he has supported the sales team for the past seven years and will continue to work on some of the current projects such as dealing with tenders, quotes and business proposals, but will also play a bigger role within the sales activities.

Eric Le Corre new BTMA chairman

Michelin UK managing director, Eric Le Corre, has been elected as the new chairman of the British Tyre Manufacturers Association (BTMA) at a recent Board meeting. The new chairman-elect replaces Continental Tyre managing director David Smith whose two year chairmanship ended recently. Le Corre will also represent the BTMA on the board of the Tyre Industry Federation (TIF). He brings with him 14 years experience in the business and takes over with immediate effect.

Kohaupt takes on emerging market role at Goodyear Dunlop

Rupert Kohaupt, formerly Goodyear Dunlop’s director of commercial vehicle tyres in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, has been appointed the tyre maker’s commercial vehicle tyre sales director for emerging markets. In his new Brussels-based role, the 30-year company veteran will continue the expansion of the growing emerging markets.

Continental South Africa appoints new head of sales

Continental Tyre South Africa (CTSA) has named Shaun Uys as general manager, sales. The move took effect on 1 October 2012 succeeding Eddie Jordaan who left the company in August.

Terry Gibson joins IGA

Terry Gibson has been appointed as the Independent Garage Association's (IGA) Operations Manager to reinforce its member offer with effect from 15 October 2012.
Gibson has worked within the motor industry for most of his working life and will bring these skills and experience to the independents. He has achieved success with the AA as the Head of Technical Support and more recently working with the market-leading supplier of security marking and registration systems for deterring thefts of vehicles.

Sailun investing for further growth

Ten years is a long time in the tyre industry. A decade ago, virtually nobody knew the name Sailun; hardly surprising, as the Chinese firm had yet to produce its first tyre. The company was established in November 2002 and the first Sailun truck tyre – a S816 pattern tyre in size 10.00R20 – was manufactured in 2003. In the following years Sailun has undergone phenomenal growth, and the firm’s original truck tyre factory has been joined by passenger car radial, OTR tyre and retreading plants. A further major stride in the company’s history took place last year when Sailun embarked on an initial public offering, which is said to have raised around RMB 1 billion (£100 million) – funds the company is drawing on for new capital expenditure projects. In September, just two months’ shy of Sailun’s tenth anniversary, Tyres & Accessories was given the opportunity to visit the tyre maker’s facility and new headquarters in Qingdao and talk about Sailun’s significant current and planned developments.

GiTi Tire appoints Product and Pricing analyst, Marketing assistant

GiTi Tire has appointed Andrew Brady to the position of Product and Pricing analyst and Ashleigh Warren as European Marketing assistant. The newly filled positions will strengthen the company’s head office team, with both recruits assuming responsibilities across the relevant product portfolios in the company’s four main brands; GT Radial, Primewell, Runway and Dextero. Brady brings more than a decade’s worth of tyre industry experience with him, while Warren is new to the sector, having previously worked for a business software firm.

Cooper “art tyres” raise £600 for Forces

Cooper Tire Europe has raised more than £600 for Help for Heroes’ Tedworth House project, in an auction of “art tyres”. The manufacturer commissioned the series, effectively using Cooper Avon brand tyres as canvases, earlier this year and auctioned three of the designs for the charity. Tedworth House was selected as an extension of the company’s links with the Race2Recovery team, which aims to help injured soldiers compete in the Dakar Rally in 2013 on Cooper’s 4×4 rubber. Based in the garrison town of Tidworth, Tedworth House is a leading recovery centre for injured service personnel seeking to inspire residents and day visitors to lead full and independent lives.

Paul Fitzhenry becomes Goodyear senior vice president, global communications

Paul Fitzhenry has been elected by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s board of directors as senior vice president of global communications, effective 8 October.

Fitzhenry will report to Richard J. Kramer, Goodyear’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. As chief communications officer, Fitzhenry will be responsible for leading Goodyear’s global communications strategy and aligning it with the company’s business objectives, global strategy, and corporate mission.

Could Europe witness a PCR retread revival?

A few years ago our March 2005 Retreading Special questioned the future of passenger car retreading in Europe after the decisions of Reif Reifen + Autotechnik GmbH and Nokian Tyres to exit the segment sounded a death knell for the industry. Despite this, a few companies have managed to cling on, but due to the huge rise in production of car tyres in so-called low-cost countries such as the Far East, retreads have struggled to compete at this end of the market. At the same time the trouble caused by the ongoing financial crisis has put pressures on businesses and consumers alike, with some markets such as the UK experiencing a sharp increase in the sales of part worn tyres. This in turn has led sections of the market to declare war on part worn tyres they see both as questionable in terms as safety and as a threat to the sales of better quality and higher value products. With all this in mind, Tyres & Accessories asks if there is a middle ground for passenger retreaders to occupy in the pressurised mature markets of Western Europe.

Bodyshop Association head resigns

The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) has announced the resignation of Graham Threlfall as Head of the National Association of Bodyshops (NAB).

Commenting on the announcement, Threlfall said "I have very much enjoyed my time as Head of NAB and having played a lead role in the launch of NAB as an independent association under the RMI umbrella. I look forward to seeing the benefits of the wider initiatives NAB are launching soon.

Hankook hosts Golf Classic

Hankook Tyre UK recently hosted its 4th annual Hankook Golf Classic at the Staverton Park Golf Club, located close to the tyre manufacturer's UK headquarters. Over 80 guests, including tyre retailers, fleet managers and Hankook personnel showed off their golfing skills. A special guest was Calum Clark, a senior player for Northampton Saints Rugby Club, of which Hankook is the sponsor.

Ballymena achievement benefits charities

Five local charities have been given a cash boost thanks to the world class business achievements of employees at the Michelin factory in Ballymena. The Ballymena factory recently became the second Michelin site in the world to achieve stage two in the 'Michelin Manufacturing Way' initiative, an internal business scheme set up to develop and empower its employees. To recognise this impressive achievement, the company awarded each department within the factory a sum of money to donate to a charity of their choice.

Pirelli appoints new UK industrial director

Luca Negri has been appointed Pirelli’s new industrial director for the UK. He takes over from Paolo Battistini, who will return to Pirelli’s Milan office to work in the Company’s Industrial business unit. Negri will be based at the tyre maker’s Carlisle site.
